Dumped: Nursing Home Evictions a Reality for Some Poor Patients | NBC Left Field

Every year, thousands of Americans are evicted from nursing homes or discharged against their wishes-sometimes illegally because they’re low-income and on state assistance like Medicaid. In 2017, long-term care ombudsmen received 10,610 complaints about discharges and transfers, up from 9,192 in 2015. In certain situations, it is perfectly legal for a nursing home to ask someone to leave: for example, if a patient’s health has improved. But even the federal government acknowledged in a 2017 memo that some nursing homes are manipulating the rules, pushing out low-income elderly and disabled people on Medicaid to make room for more lucrative patients.

More reasons while we need national healthcare
@Amoreyna

I've been a veteran for over 15 years, injured in the line of duty. When I joined the VA I was told I could go to the local ER for heart attack/stroke, otherwise, I needed to go over 70 miles away [best case scenario, otherwise it was over a 100] to receive care and that included for multiple broken bones. We've only had more localized care over the past few years and that was because the sitting president at the time allowed the VA to reach such a state that the number of veterans were dying waiting to receive any care became a national news story. That situation had been going for years by this point. I have literally almost died more than once due to sub-standard care [I'm lucky I had a local non-profit hospital save my life] and have sat next to others in my position as we waited for hours, or worse were dying because care came too late. So sure, the government still can't keep staffing up at their facilities, still has problems offering quality services, veterans, especially in rural or poor areas, still have problems seeing doctors, they still delay care but let's widen this net. Meanwhile, the cost of living increases across the board while people advocate for more taxes to pay for a system that is destined to fail in a country where people refuse to take care of themselves. Our health system has a lot of problems, way too many, but looking at countries with socialized medicine that are much smaller than the US - well, it's not a pretty picture either when one actually bothers to look below the surface. But sure, the overly simplified solution of 'just let the government run it' sure sounds great. Good luck with that. They've done such a great job with veterans who make up such a small portion of this nation's population, I'm sure they'll do great with you while you get to drive long stretches to see a doctor approved in your care system after waiting months to get in. Hope their a good one despite the pay since apparently, people in healthcare should forgo paying rent and eating. Between the massive amount of red tape, lower pay, and low quality/access services, the Feds can't keep quality staff but I'm sure that won't be a problem under the glorified socialist idealism. Not like it's a problem for NHS, oh, wait...

Ah yes...Once again, Corporations. When I began my nursing career, I only accepted the most difficult cases because nobody wanted to. Word got out and my 2nd year of working, I had an waiting list of 85 ppl. 3rd year it went to a stunning 300+ ppl waiting. I would feel horrible that I couldn't help them all. I started to work 1 week or so in ppls homes, just to set the standards and levels of care families came to know of my work. It worked, with a few hiccups, but I was happy that at least 52 ppl got great care and nurses got great technical knowledge to make life easy for all without giving up ANY quality. I would always stop by after my shift and visit up to 3 homes, just to make sure standards were met and kept. Supervisors would ask me "why?", Its really simple..these are human beings and deserved the quality of those with 5 star insurance. And yes, I pissed off a lot of ppl, but 🤷‍♂️ They've given me awards and such, my sis would always pick them up and say a few words, after all, I was too busy and too shy to accept them myself. I've never told this story before, just close friends and family knew. Whether you have 10 cents or 10 million, everyone should be treated to top quality care, PERIOD!!! I felt such rage watching this, but was slightly comforted by the smiles that some of the patients had. Gosh...I've never ranted like this before, apologies for my long wind! Corporate greed is fueling a lot of this. Most hospitals and nursing homes are owned by corporations, all they care about is maximizing profits at the expense of their patients and staff. I think any nursing home that dumps a disabled person at a homeless shelter is sorry as hell. Homeless shelters are not equipped to care for people who are handicapped, need doctor visits and medications every day, etc. I hope this doesn’t one day happen to me or my family.

My heart breaks as I’ve experienced this in my own life and it’s one of the very most awful stressful sad and mentally&physically taxing things to go through in this life. My heart and condolences go out to the families of the lady who’s husband died in May and the son and daughter of the sweet lady who died after her many ordeals as well. This has got to be changed. There are too many scores and scores of “baby boomers” from age 55 ish+ that are in need of serious care Etc, and this will only continue to epidemic levels that we’ve never seen, over the next decade onwards and it’s going to be a nightmare and it’s NOT RIGHT OR FAIR.

"Fair" is for disneyland. Reality doesn't do "fair", and we have to work with reality. As you say, this should be a warning to any younger person who thinks the Govt will come to their rescue when they get old. It was always a stupid thing to believe, so at this point they should know better .. but unfortunately some don't. Hopefully this reminds those folk, and they realise they have to financially plan ahead for their old age. And they have to stick together in stable, secure, and supportive families.

We live in Canada, where healthcare is free. However, seniors are expected to pay $1000's in extended care. I choose to move back home and be a caretaker for both parents. I don't think I could live myself if I knew they could possibly become evicted from a home. I am able to do this due to the fact my parents have an awesome pension. I can't possibly understand people who carelessly leave someone alone, sick and homeless on the street, take advantage of an elderly person... How? Just... I can't... I’m disabled now and I used to be a CNA at a nursing home. I’m greatly grieved by this dilemma. I think the cause is our country’s hiking up costs of everything. Nursing homes are ridiculously expensive and yet aids are run to the bone. Also, the elderly and severely disabled need places to go. Personally, I won’t be a vegetable. I’ll do assisted suicide if it gets to the level of not being able to know my loved ones. That’s my personal decision based on my own chronic disability and what I saw when I was working. I don’t think these facilities are any way to live. Not going out in nature, not being free. But are we really free in America? Just ask any tribal member that

What happens when the said Family goes Financially Bankrupt, lose their Employment, other Resources, and any other Family Members get infirmed and incapacitated themselves from their own Stressors and Health issues, Then What?! What happens when Extended Family Members just plain don't want to take on the responsibility for that said Elderly Patient due to their own problems, their own necessary Lifestyle choices, their inability to do any sort of caregiving, or the fact that they cannot realistically spend the rest of their lives taking responsibility for that Person's Livelihood, What Then?! It's easy to make a blank statement, however if you cannot realistically take care of another Person in their Old Age and someone who's disabled, that's really impossible...

Hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers would simply load up the patient and leave them in another waiting room or even on the curb. It was horrible. People were found deathly ill or dead. The current measures quoted here were the result of this. One of the axes to grind is healthcare. Watch very closely on what your favorite candidates are proposing for healthcare in this election. Your life will depend on it.

People sayin' disabled folks shouldn't treated with love and respect need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Being severely disabled is a possibility, even if you're in great health now. You jus' don't know sometimes. They deserve to be treated with kindness despite their disabilities. I take care of my disabled grandma. If we find, in the unfortunate circumstance, we become homeless, I'll.be right there with her. She raised me since 'bout 3 months old. And I'll take care of her. Jus' need to get my Ls for when she can't drive anymore. She drives for now. Has arthritis. I love her with all my heart.

Kicked out sent on Skid row and they was smiling WOW that's sick 🤢 prison treat inmates better than nursing homes sometimes as a former nurse and as a former correctional officer dude just commit a crime that way you have somewhere to stay and some type of medical Care we will give you insulin and make sure you're alive and if you're guilty we won't be just throwing you out in the middle of the night with a smile on our face u will serve your time

What I find pathetic is that these same outraged people will reelect Republicans who are destroying any safety net that would help these people.

Everyone in that family walks with a limp. Pretty interesting. I’m going to assume one of the older members of the family had a problem and the rest just mimicked it, unknowingly.
