Our world's beaches are cultural treasures and valuable financial engines. Keeping these beaches healthy is a never ending process. John explains the most common methods used to protect these essential resources and how decisions we make, can literally... Shape the shoreline. John Hearin, Ph.D. grew up in Daytona Beach, FL. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1982 with a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering. He moved to the Space Coast in 1985, where he was a member of the Space Shuttle Launch team for nearly 20 years. As the Shuttle program was winding down he earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology. After graduation John served as an Assistant Research Professor at FIT for several years. He is currently working as a sub-contractor for United Launch Alliance. John has also been an active member for the Surfrider Foundation for over 15 years and is currently the Chairman of the Cocoa Beach chapter. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I think 32937 needs managed retreat. Unfortunately their shearwater project and condos they just put right on the dune is more important than what’s Right. So now we will watch them truck in dirt with a different composition and dump it right into the ocean. The burying of our reef is the demise of our coast here because the reef was a natural barrier. Sad

As a local here, the influx of population from these condo developments have created many other problems aside from this. Never have I seen so many pedestrian fatalities in the years I've lived here. To his point on turtles, all the light pollution at night that will be added when the developments are done will be another beach issue. I don't understand the push and drive to turn this area into a big city. Building vertically near the beach is straight up greed.
