I worked in a meat department at a grocery store as a meat wrapper , usually when meat turns that color, the ground beef, they will turn is over and rewarp it! The lights of the store cause the color to do this, but be careful
Hi, it's me again, the German butcher. the minced meat does not have to be spoiled, sometimes the meat turns gray because no oxygen and no light comes to the meat. Here is my tip, if the use-by date is ok and the meat does not smell unpleasant, remove the plastic wrap and put the meat in a cool and bright place with lots of light for about 15 minutes, when it turns red again the meat is completely ok and can be consumed .... There is a simple chemical reaction behind the grayish discoloration in the minced meat. If there is little oxygen at a point, the protein myoglobin contained in the meat begins to form pigments and the red color begins to turn brown and gray.This is also the reason why discolouration is usually the strongest on the inside or on the areas that touch the edge of the packaging. If you expose discolored minced meat to air for about 15 minutes, the gray areas should turn pink again. Extract from a specialist book for butchers
Time to invest in a vacuum sealer. You can write what it is and the expiration date on the bag, but get rid of a ton of the bulky packaging to help save on some of your freezer space!!! Great haul!!!! Congrats on 5k!!!
@@FrugalCouple I bought a FoodSaver from Wal-Mart a couple of years ago. Probably the cheapest model that would allow for use of the jar sealers. Finally got the jar sealers for Christmas this year.
For those that get the chubs of ground beef, if you cook them (even after frozen) and then freeze them, they take up less space and make meal time go faster. One pound is about 2 cups of cooked. Depending on fat count. Something to pass along to those you give food to.
