I've been aware of dumpster diving for years. But thanks to social media we obviously get to see people's hauls. So obviously follow up on all local laws, be mindful of trespassing signs gated areas etc. Obviously use common sense on expired or open containers of makeup or anything like that. I just had to comment because I read about an employee at an Ulta store, I believe it was in Florida, who used bleach and poured it all over the discarded makeup in the dumpster. The employee made a comment along the lines of "Enjoy your dumpster diving finds". And this is really freaking extreme to do that. As a former chemical warehouse employee, I was always told that if any chemicals leaked on to the ground DEP would need to be called in as this is an environmental hazard. I have no problem with anybody recycling anything they can get their hands on because we are a completely wasteful country. And it's really disturbing to hear about practices by stores who slash expensive handbags, wedding dresses, etc. There's literally always some program, or some way to donate things. It really is disturbing to me 1.) that people destroy things before throwing them away when they can be used, and 2.) the fact that employees would do something to create an environmental hazard by pouring dangerous chemicals that can leach into the ground and water systems if consistently engaging in such a practice. A lot of people around the world that are struggling to make ends meet and are trying to get a job, but they don't have the items they need to dress or look nice like business clothes, maybe even basic hygiene products. For God's sake all those soaps could be in bath and body washes could be donated to shelters. Like I said it's more of a crime what businesses do than it is to dumpster dive in my opinion.
Go on your own. Bring gloves a grabber and some reusable shopping bags . I walk to dive sometimes and I never park my car near a dumpster it looks suspicious. Also check the laws in the place where u live to make sure diving isn’t illegal. Other than that just go. It’s fun.
Also not for nothing, if you can't get to dive, the $ Tree has upped their game, at least on the east coast for skincare, make-up, make-up remover s, and I found the only place to buy decent smelling hand sanitizer.
