I know a couple people like this. Even with me offering to take the stuff for them to donate. For some reason they want to throw usable stuff away. I think a large part of it is that they didn't earn the money, and buy the stuff.

Years ago my city realized that when the students left at the end of the college year, TONS! of stuff was going to the landfill. A non profit was started and collection bins were place around campuses to collect unwanted items. Volunteers also hit the curbs to look for items in the trash that could be recovered. The items are organized and cleaned and prepared for a giant yard sale that is held when the students return for the next school year. A different local charity is the target of the monies raised annually. Thousands of dollars every year is raised on the resale of the items that use to go to the landfill....dollars that go back into the community. We also have reuse stores where students can donate unwanted items before they leave the city.

My father is a construction worker. One time, many years ago, he was called in to do some minor renovations on a rental unit after some college kids moved out. He and my mother (who was helping him when she was unemployed for a period of time) found a lot of great things in the dumpster! It was insane. They found a defective iPod (remember when iPods were a thing and they were expensive?) Turns out it was a manufacturer defect so I called in to Apple Care and they sent me a brand new replacement. A designer watch (nothing too fancy but at the time I could've sold it for $80 used). A fancy scientific calculator (those things are not cheap and this one was advanced). I don't remember the other things my parents brought back home. I wish they could've brought more stuff home but they only brought back what they thought might be worthwhile. Just blows my mind how wasteful some people are.

My apartment building is the same way! People throw away things that are in mint condition or at most can be fixed up for a few bucks. I’m like, okay, you don’t wanna go through the work of selling it, at least fkn donate it! There are companies that will come pick it up for free and use the money they make for medical research. There’s literally no excuse except total laziness and lack of self awareness. I don’t buy anything new anymore, and won’t again. Knowing how much perfectly good used stuff people throw away, makes no sense to support companies that would rather slash a T-shirt than donate it to a homeless shelter.

Suggestion: Sometimes instead of bleach you should try Ivory bar soap for stains and peroxide, Dawn dish soap, and baking soda instead for their whitening properties. Can use all at once or whatever combination is your choice. Baking soda actually boosts soap and cleaning power. Sometimes bleach is not the first thing you want to try.

First of all, any viewers with young children watching this, teach your children NOW to reduce, reuse and recycle! Make it a family project to donate used items - don't just throw everything away! Your children will follow your example and when they grow up into college students, they won't be as wasteful as these young people in this video obviously are... but for now, possibly church groups in the area of a college or university - set up a drive in local apartment communities and donate gently used items to local women's shelter or thrift shops.

I can’t believe the waste of these college students! I remember when I was moving from college, I had extra things that wouldn’t be able to fit in my parent’s house (couch, one of those fabric closets, a microwave). My Dad and I put them outside of the front door. Before he could even write out a ‘Free’ sign, someone came up and asked if we were giving it away. The place I was living in was a complex of townhouses. It was mostly families living there. Within minutes, people surrounded the front of the townhouse waiting to see if we would be giving away other items. I ended up giving more than I intended to but everyone was so grateful and happy. It worked out well. If they had not come by, I would have just taken them home and either donated or sold the items. I think the donation box outside of the college for move-out day would be a good idea. I used to work at a hotel that most of the employees were either from out of province or another country. We had employee housing. When people would leave the job (a lot of them were seasonal), there was a room in a staff common area that you could leave the items that were too much to pack and bring on a plane. People left luggage, bedding, dishes, clothing, etc. We could go into this room and take whatever we wanted or needed. It was good for those who had just moved in and forgot to bring certain items. I’m happy to see that thanks to you, a lot of these items will be reused and saved from landfills :)

I like the donation bin idea. When I went to college back in the frigid northlands I recall that the end of the school year was really stressful because you were basically spending all you're time simultaneously moving on a really tight timeframe as well as studying for finals or wrapping up final projects. It would have been awesome to have donation bins them, but also to have more time, guidance on moving, and help on mentally healthy ways to discover oneself without necessarily doing so by shopping. A lot of folks at my college had that problem and came from wealthy homes so there was little regard for wastefulness or what really is important in life.

I grew up in a college town and it has always been like this after student move out day. And there are TONS of dumpster divers who go through it all. I think donation bins would be great. Maybe that’s something that could be coordinated with the local thrift stores and donation centers? Of course they would have to be very very conveniently located. The biggest problem is college aged students -collectively speaking- tend to procrastinate, and are doing all of this at the very last minute. They realize they don’t have room to bring everything home so they chuck it quickly and gtfo lol! But I think all the townie dumpster divers benefit greatly from it and I think it all comes out in the wash lol!

In Italy where I live we have dumpsters for clothes, and household items, these are for Caritas. Once a week a big truck comes and sorts through the items and takes them away. Italy is big on recycling…we have paper, glass and metal, plastic, and dumpsters for organic too. Also at the recycling center they accept all kinds of things, furniture, large items in glass, small and large appliances, printer ink cartridges, old cooking oil, batteries, just to name a few. There is also a recycling store where you just donate unwanted usable things and they in turn sell them for a nominal fee. I hope that your town has established these centers so there will be less items that can be recycled in the landfills. I enjoy watching your videos!

Honestly I'm 100% for curbside finds. I currently live in one of these college community rentals, and lots of people leave things on the side of the dumpster, in hopes of someone else benefitting from it. That being said though, lots of people dump straight up TONS of actual garbage in this same area and so some good things that could be used end up all mixed in. I wish there was a more centralized way of giving these things directly to people, or in a location where it would directly benefit others. Like I've seen lots of communities do community pantry's like they would community library at the side of ones house or in a commonly used field.
