This might just be my Favourite Duncan episode, hard to tell as I also love his debut one too. Great job bro, once again, in the words of Harold and Rusty, "keep up the good work!"
Thank you! Duncan's intro is great too but I think this episode just has so much to offer that it's easily elevated above the rest. I'd probably do a top ten favorite classic episodes list but I wouldn't want to give it all away!
2:46 not to mention that A the tucks chose to break away and B they only fell of the bridge because you could clearly see them bump on a bad bit of rail which that bridge shouldn’t even be in use.
This just so happens to be my favorite episode from the entire show as well. I would also like to point out something interesting about the American dub of this episode pertaining to when the freight cars go off the side of the bridge. There's a sound that plays as they fall and you don't hear this sound in the UK dub. You also hear the end part of Season 5's runaway theme in the US dub as well. This same exact sound is used in Dunkin' Duncan from Season 6. I always found this sound effect to be rather unusual as I believe Duncan Gets Spooked and Dunkin' Duncan are the only two episodes from the classic model era to use this sound and like I said, you only hear this sound and jingle in the American dub of Duncan Gets Spooked.
One of my faves of Season 5🤘although it would've been awesome if Duke told the story of the ghost engine instead of Rusty. I mean, he's been on the Island for much longer, and that engine is rumored to be a Mid Sodor Engine. Besides, that would have given him a Season 5 Appearence, but of course this was not possible as his model was painted in to Bertram's
Deffo a favourite episode to be sure, love how they avoided playing it 'safe'. They had an engine actually die (not shown to be sentient but it's face can be glimpsed clearly all the same) and implying that the ghost could be real (assuming Rusty's story is true that is). There's also the implication that two humans died in the process, as the deleted shot of the engine approaching the bridge has its crew in its cab clear as day. Even if the scene was deleted it's been firmly established that engines are machines driven by people, so still rather dark whichever way you look at it. Part of me thinks it's possible that something supernatural was at work that night. Unless Duncan was seeing things as a result of fear getting the better of him, there's no way fireflies could just take the shape of an engine so perfectly. And there's no way Duncan's crew could have predicted the fireflies would do that or even be there. The fact we don't know the full details of their plan helps too (we know they planned to cross the bridge and throw a rock from the cab, but for all we know they could have planned for other things but the fireflies/ghost did it for them...) Another great video, nicely done.
I feel like the most reasonable explanation is that the fireflies were simply buzzing around and weren't actually associated with the ghost. The key thing that stood out to me was the narration saying 'to Duncan they looked like an engine' which sounds like that shot of the ghost's outline was from Duncan's unreliable POV. He's terrified, so we see what he sees, but it may not necessarily be what his crew saw, for instance. I like to think Rusty's story about the engine falling really is true because it adds a touch of edge to the series and maybe the ghost really does travel across the bridge, but Duncan didn't actually encounter it. There's a lot of possibilities!
@@giantfightingroboto Very true. Taking a 'not necessarily anything supernatural but can be if the viewer wants it to be' approach made the episode for sure. The ghost story possibly being real deffo adds some edge. Especially as the engine and presumably its crew were 'never found', as it means that the NG engines could be unknowingly travelling over an engine's carcass (possibly with the skeletal remains of the crew) on a daily basis. Chilling.
@@TheKingOfPoop123 Precisely, the ambiguous nature of it is the best approach because it pleases both camps who prefer Sodor grounded, and who are open to spooky stuff. The prospect of the engine and possibly even the crew's remains still remaining down there is chilling, but if that's the case then I do have to wonder why it was never recovered. Maybe it was too deep and ultimately decided as a grave site like a shipwreck is, or it was just unfeasible to salvage it.
The creepy thing about this ghost is that rusty never said his story was made up also a fun fact this story was based on a real life event where two workman taking a narrow gauge engine did fall off a bridge
I like 2 think the story of the engine falling off the bridge really happened and later when we c it return with fireflies i believe it somehow overheard Duncans crews plan so he helped teach Duncan a lesson.
I've been a fan of ghost train episode. I've always asked who were those engines? I'll never forget that first time i seen him and who was the small engine or the one from the michael brenner era?
At 3 minutes 9 seconds, have you taken those few seconds from a different episode. I had this episode on VHS and DVD when I was younger and watched the episode again years later online and I can not find those few seconds before it shows the bridge?
One issue I have with this episode is that Duncan's working at night without a headlamp. Wouldn't that be against railway regulations? Also, what do you think of Alec Baldwin's narration of the episode, including the ghost story
This is why I'm the outsider of the Thomas fan community because, while I understand the appeal and I don't hate it by any stretch of the imagination considering what came after, I just don't like it as much as everyone else does. Still a good video though my friend 😊🚂🚃
That's fair, I can imagine not everyone liking it since its just so different. I feel the same way about series 3, most people seem to love it but while rewatching it for the ranking script I've just been bored senseless by it 😭

Yeah, I used the deleted scenes in the video. It’s kinda contradictory because you can definitely see the red paint as it falls. I guess it’s up to you to decide which colour you prefer!
@@giantfightingroboto I didn't know until I saw your video. It's pretty cool because it felt weird that the little engine was identical to Skarloey. The black paint was probably easy to wash off, so Skarloey didn't have to be repainted, which means it would've come off whenever his model fell into the water. Maybe it was too difficult to keep repainting Skarloey black.
Yeah, I think it might have just been a hassle to do. I would have liked the deleted scene to have been included in the episode but I guess the ultimately felt as if it wasn't needed. Maybe it was really early on that they cut it, and that's where there's a bit of inconsistency with the colours. They do reuse stuff quite a bit, like how Smudger's model when he's a generator still has a red cab because he's just a Rheneas repaint.
