Remember that when the Reverend Mother asked him if things happen exactly as he dreamed them and Paul said no. So his dreams/visions don’t always represent reality. Part 2 goes into it further
@RocketSurgn_
@RocketSurgn_ 5 месяцев назад
I particularly like his interpretation (and have thought it myself since Part 1 released) that in _some_ cases the visions that don’t seem to line up with what ends up happening aren’t just “another possible future” or unclear meaning, but actually internally self fulfilling. That the visions of Jamis as Paul’s teacher were directly true, even in the way events play out in the films with Jamis dying, because he does the teaching in the visions themselves. A bit like in the Matrix when the oracle asks Neo if the vase would have fallen at all if she didn’t tell him not to worry about breaking it. It’s been too long since I’ve read the books in full to remember if that exactly lines up with how the books describe the visions working, but it seems to fit well throughout Villeneuve’s films.

Yeah it's not really a spoiler, just not explained well in part 1. Paul sees *possible* futures. They may or may not become true.

The Reverend Mother was planning the entire thing all along. She might even be - spoiler alert - Paul's grandmother, though it's not explicitly stated. That's why Jessica wasn't sure who her parents were.

Another bit of the story I had a time getting my head around was that Jessica was supposed to have a daughter instead of a son. Due to intense mental training, the Bene Gesserit have conscious control over every function in their body, even the autonomic functions. A Bene Gesserit can alter her internal chemistry to control the development of a fetus.

Jamis was his friend, and he did indeed teach him the ways of the desert: No compassion, no mercy. If you don't cut their throat, they'll cut yours. Whatever it takes to survive. Any innocence Paul had left was stripped away in that moment and he is now fully on this new path with the Fremen. I won't go into detail as to spoil anything, but it's portrayed as the pivotal moment of Paul's journey in the book. Once he kills Jamis, his fate is basically sealed and there's no turning back, with enormous consequences for the rest of this intergalactic society.

Shields attract worms because it pulses extremely quickly and worms are drawn to rhythmic noises so they respond extra aggressively to an incredibly fast rhythm The worm wasnt talking to paul, paul was actually talking to the worm. When he says "i recognise your footsteps old man" hes not actually talking to gurney, hes in a vision and isnt aware that gurney is behind him. Shai Hulud literally translates to old man of the desert "Those look like hairs not teeth" wait until cody fings out about whale baleen 😭

His visions are of possible futures, not necessarily exactly what will happen. And the line about when you take a life you take your own, its not literal its more like you kill the person you were before (innocent and naive) and become a new person, having lived through that experience. etc

P.s. The Kriss knives are a real thing, but they have a very different and distinct shape. It's dagger with a blade that is wavey, idk how to explain. High af. The reason that woman starts screaming "aaahhhww" the moment Jessica says "maker" is because she thinks Jessica means the worm, which the Fremen call the Maker aka Shai Halud. But if you notice Jessica wasn't done talking, she says "It's a maker o---". What she meant to say is "It's a maker of death" But the moment the Fremen woman hears "maker" she thinks Jessica means the worm (the blade is made from the tooth of a worm). Which convinces her that Jessica and Paul are the ones from the prophecy. When the woman starts screaming it interrupts Jessica. If Jessica had said the wrong thing the woman would have tried to kill her, it's why she signalled the guards.

There is another fact about the shield technology in the Dune universe that makes the inability to use shields in the desert convenient. If a lasgun (the beams shown a few times) impacts an active shield, the reaction is not unlike a nuclear explosion.

My favorite scene in both movies. Is when he stares down the reverend mother hand in the box. “Kwizats Haderach is a power to strong to control”. You can see it in her face when the music drops. Best foreshadow in film history

You NEED to see the 1984 movie directed by David Lynch...just for camp purposes. The directors name is Denis Villeneuve (pronounced de-knee veal-noov) and he's done a marvelous job of adapting an almost unadaptable movie. Shields are vibrational in nature, and as the worms track things through vibrations the high-frequency vibration of shields on sand drive them insane. Walking without rhythm is key to making your way across the sands without drawing a worm - unless you hit drum sand in which case you need to hoof it.

My country-man, Stellan Skarsgård, (Alexanders and Bills father) had to wear a fat suit for this movie. Oscar Isac said, that when he was naked, on the chair; and Stellan came close.... he scared the S-it out of him. The tear is real! 😆 😅😂 The "main Harkonnen" (Stellan), was always creaping up on people, scaring them at set. 😂 Ps: Rebecca Fergusson, Paul's mother, is ALSO a Swedish/Skandinavian fellow country man/lady. She played "The White Queen"... if you recognized her.

Part 2 is amazing as well. On Jamis - the visions says that Jamis will "teach (Paul) the way of the desert", and the desert is brutal and unforgiving. The vision showing Paul dying is a metaphor of sorts. It will be explained more in Part 2, but as simple and spoiler free as possible you could say that by taking a life, Paul has killed his own innocence and it (inevitably) changes him completely as a person. Loved your reaction, but yeah, subtitles might be a good idea for part 2 - personally, I find it easier to keep up with everything if I have subtitles on (although that could be at least in part due to English being my second language, and being from a country that doesn't voice dub anything aimed at an audience older than 9). The films are pretty story dense. Also! Did you recognize the Baron? :D You have absolutely seen him before - he has a part in the MCU, and he has also been in Pirates of the Caribbean. ;)

7:38, yes Duke Leto is Oscar Isaac who played MoonKnight in the MCU and Poe Dameron in the Star Wars franchise. When Dune was first released, Denis Villeneuve publicly mentioned his disdain for superhero movies particularly the MCU. I just find it ironic that his cast is chock full of people who have been the primary or supporting characters in MCU and DCEU movies.
@Saphthings

I wish the movie explained it a bit more. I watched the movie, then read the comic, than the books. It's very easy to explain, Paul can see possible futures, so he saw himself learning everything with his friend in a possible future, and then ended up having to kill him. That's why you thought he'd be his friend. Because he was, in another path.
@ahleena
@ahleena 5 месяцев назад
Since you haven't read the book, you wouldn't know. But in the fight scene with the fremen where it seemed to you (and to the fremen) that Paul was toying with him, he wasn't. It was a remnant of his training where you fight with shields. Shields will deflect a hard blow but a slow moving blade is allowed through. So they trained to swing hard but go slowly in the last inch.

@dlweiss
@dlweiss 5 месяцев назад
Put simply, Paul sees a bunch of *possible* futures in his visions. Almost like the multiverse - branching paths based on a million little choices. So in *one* of those possible futures, Jamis became his close friend and taught him the ways of the desert. Sadly, that's not the future that Paul actually gets to live in. So all he'll ever have are his visions of a deep friendship that can never exist.

The thing about forcefields in Dune is although they are really advanced they’ve also existed for thousands of years, so in that time warfare has also advanced to account for forcefields. A good example of how forcefields can be beneficial is that no one uses guns because bullets are too fast to get through the shields.

This is actually my favorite of the two - which is not the popular opinion but it’s really - to me - the more truthful of the two so far by Den V. What I mean is part one feels very relatable- the relationships feel heartfelt and real - very natural in the character portrayal and their motivations are believable In part 2 - it feels like these characters are characters. It seems more campy ---- Also I LOVE that you have snarky reactions all through this Please don’t ever change

I was afraid I’d get way more “WTFs” out of Cody during this reaction, I was certain y’all would like it as long as you gave it a chance ☺️ Paul’s described as having a dancers body, so yes strong but lean. So, cut but make it Timothée Chalamet. Everyone who is a part of House Atreides by choice loves the Duke & his family as much as they loathe the Harkonnens, (which is at least as much as Gurney hates them-yes, they were all traumatized by the Harkonnens in one way or another, and based on the screams you can sometimes hear in the background of Harkonnen scenes you can use your imagination.) Duncan escaped the Harkonnen homeworld as a child after they killed his sister, for instance. The visions are possibilities, I always roll my eyes a little when they have the “the one” conversation, but I get most people need that shorthand. By bridging “time & space” he can see future potentialities. So there is a timeline where he is killed by Zendaya, a timeline where he is killed by Jamais, a future where he is fighting in the Jihad, a future where Duncan dies in that hallway…🤔 That one came true tho, didn’t it? To understand who Paul is we must at least question why he chose to go down one path and not another. Anyway, yes Bene Gesserit sisters can decide the sex of their children because they have so much control over their bodies a fully trained sister can stop her own heart if need be. So why dod the Lady Jessica choose to have a son? It’s touch on in the film but more fully addressed in the book: The Duke wanted a son and The Lady wanted to give him what he wanted, because love. The Lady & The Duke are not married because she is not nobility, they love one another and so you don’t see an actual wife anywhere but Jessica can only be his concubine-Or they could’ve married and said to hell with tradition 🤷🏻‍♀️. They also do not do a great job at indicating where “worm territory” begins and ends, literally every reacter has made comment about how they should be sand-walking after they land the ornithopter. I would have liked to have seen more sand-walking, I remember friends who were also into Dune complained about that after the film came out. Pretty much the only thing any of us complained about. BTW, in Dune there is no magic and there are no aliens-If you can do massive amounts of math in your head it’s because you’ve been trained to do that; if you can check someone’s vitals with your fingertips, it’s because you’ve been trained to do that. The bulls are not only symbolic of Paul’s grandfather’s death but a foreshadowing of Leto’s end as well, and also a symbol of their house’s Mediterranean lineage, (Atreides, pronounced like Pleiades.) Lineage is important-Bene Gesserit’s work has been focused entirely upon their eugenics program, specifically directing the specific individuals to breed with others until that line produces “the one,” (as the Reverend Mother points out tho, it’s not “the one,” but the one right now, the one closest to producing their desired result.)

7:45, Duke Leto was just being a kind loving father to Paul...he lied to him. Paul at this point is an only child just like his father was. When Leto's father Paulus Atreides died he was made the new Duke at about 16. Paul here is supposed to be about 16 as well. Where it not for the wise counsel of Thufir Hawaii and the testimony of a young Duncan Idaho, House Atreides would not have survived. So Paul really doesn't have a choice but to step up or his house will collapse.

Aww man I almost forgot how many signs the first movie throws at you that Chani will become an anti Paul character in the second movie. Kinda really dislike what they did to Chani. Also.. why the FFFF is Lady Jessica constantly crying and getting emotional. She's a BG. I get it, they want to show her internal struggle but it diminishes the power of a BG, they don't lose control over their emotions. The only time Lady Jessica cries is when she mourns Leto in the tent

There could have been limited supplies on other planets, but not nearly as much as they needed to keep exploring space or they used to have less effective ways to do it. They needed a steady supply. Eventually they found the place with all the spice they would ever need and kept mining it on Arakkis ever since.

They had interstellar travel before the spice was discovered. However, without spice, traveling through space was much more hazardous. Complex calculations were needed to fold space, but the AI computers that could do this were not available because AI was outlawed. As a result, human errors could be made and ships might get lost or crash into objects. Spice gives the Guild Navigators some limited prescience. They are able to see a safe path in advance without the need for AI calculations, so when ships fold space the risk of ending up in the wrong place or colliding with an asteroid or moon or planet is avoided.

I tried to watch this movie a few weeks ago on Max. I fell asleep watching it hehe. I hope Dune 2 is more exciting. You need to watch the 1984 version of Dune. It's got Sting in it, and Patrick Stewart.

That's his style. Despite dishing out comedic takes like machine gun, this reactor still immerses himself deeply in most of the epic films on this channel. Not all reactors react the same way. 100k sub channels obviously appeals to many. At the end of the day, this very intelligent and witty reactor was still blown away by the fllm, if you cared to listen to the man's outro. To each his own.

Guys you definitely need to see more amazing movies from this Canadian Director. Its not just the Dune movies and Arrival. He also directed the modern blade runner film, and Prisoners. Both great. And Sicario. And even the rest of them that are more unknown are pretty good. He simply can't miss. Worth to see all of them.

A few things you need to know to understand the Duneverse. There was a war with the machines. So there are no computers. Basically it's based on European history. The emperor is the king (probably of England since they were the most powerful). The Bene Gesserit are the catholic church but women. They manipulate behind the scenes and run plans over centuries or longer. The second secrete power the navigators guild are the merchant navy. The emperor appears to be the ultimate power. But if the houses( think dukes and other royals in line for the throne of England or even kings of other countries) turn against him, he falls. The emperor can be over thrown. The church can't openly take control yet but influence the emperor and everything else. Then there's the navigators guild. If the ships don't sail it all falls apart. So who really runs things?

England wasn't ever the most powerful nation for what it's worth. That didn't happen till they became Great Britain.

The Emperor is essentially the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Bene Gesserit is the Machiavellian version of the Catholic church while moving pieces of the chess board from the shadows as the woman are the true players of the Dune universe while doing eugenics to create a perfect being they can control by crossing bloodlines who can bridge space time to see a future where humanity survives called the golden path. George Lucas borrows heavily from the Dune novels and can see striking parallels between The Voice/Prescience = Jedi mind trick/ The Force, Dune Sandworm = Sarlacc pit, Fremen = Tusken Raiders and Jawas, Arrakis = Tatooine, Spice Melange = Spice narcotics in seedy underbelly of the Star Wars Galaxy, etc.

I wish there was some brief explanation of that for people who didn’t read the books. The strict ban on computers and A.I. is the reason why SO MUCH of the Dune universe is the way it is. It’s a really unique idea. Many new schools of thinking and the training of the human body and mind to it’s limits had to be created to fill the gaps that computers and other advanced technology used to fill. It’s why the spice is so ridiculously valuable. Spice is essential for interstellar travel because super computers were used to make the incredibly complex calculations needed to travel between the stars before it was banned. This gap was filled by spice, which expands the mind and eventually unlocks prescient abilities, giving one access to which route will safely get the starship to it’s destination. A ton of cool background lore was left out. Kinda disappointing.

Its based on the Holy Roman Empire. Neither England nor the UK has ever had an Emperor. The Landsraad is an almost exact analogue for the HRE imperial system.
