On the other hand, there is Wolfe's practice of using various archaic and/or historic terms more or less familiar to us as approximations or substitutes for something we have no concept of (stated as a 'method of translation' in the Appendices). This migh be applicable to the Kabbalistic terminology as well.

Yes Ben! That's what I was going for...the limited content there is talking BotNS is always full spoiler, you can't help it really. Just know that Urth... is absolutely essential reading!

Hyperion is very good but BOTNS is on a whole other level.

🙌🏼👍🏻 Definitely agree on your point about Wolfe’s plots being impossible to summarize without spoilers! (basically because they go backwards). One point where we might have an interesting argument is whether TBoTNS is plausible science fiction. I believe it is. I really think his attention to the scientific aspect of his universe is very high, not lower than Arthur Clarke for example, only expressed with a different style.

yeah those are three heavy hitters. as much as I love Dune and BOTNS, Hyperion is in a class of its own.

I would rank BOTNS first, Dune second and Hyperion a distant third. It's not even in my top 50 favorite SF novels. Simmons is an odd writer, too. None of his works are very satisfying.
