Kinda utopist in a certain way. Most ecosystem have predators and prey. People of Caladan would only be able to achieve this level of supremacy throught means similar to our owns and perfect propaganda to prevent conflict of ideas. Simply put, Arrakis seems more realist than Calandan.

Give a man paradise then threaten to take it from him. You will see a fury that will rival any despot, any savage. The hungry are a threat because they have nothing to lose. The shadow of hunger is something greater. Because those men have everything to lose.

No one has a well-trained army on such a world. It's why I don't trust the Encyclopedia.

Where is it said that Caladan is post-scarcity? It may have a relatively low population since it is more sea than land. That can lead to surpluses of things like food, but not much is said of domestic industry. Which implies that they are still caught up in the CHOAM trade network for products they do not produce domestically.

I used to think that, I now believe they didn’t refuse the offer due to believing by knowing it was a trap they could out manoeuvre it.

When the Emperor tells you to do something, it's not a request - it's an order. But Leto being the perceptive Duke that he was, knew it was a trap and had to go along with it anyway.

This puts me in mind of the Dune film, notably the beginning, where Virginia Madsen as Irulan fades in and sets the scene. The beauty of her costume, the subtle hints in the prelude to the Prophecy Theme suggest the rise of a great power. It was my first introduction to the world of Dune, and I shall not forget it. "A beginning is a very delicate time. Know, then, that it is the year 10,191. The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV...my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the Spice melange." Gradual fade out... "The Spice extends life. The Spice expands consciousness." Fade back in. While some would say that you can never be a messiah in your own home town, this was never more true than it was of Paul. Remember that he actually had to undergo the Spice Agony (and nearly died) in order to fully awaken his prescient powers. Had he remained on Caladan, he would have never awakened to his full potential and the Bene Gesserit breeding program would have continued on. Irulan, through her prose, is accurately describing the importance of Paul *and* Dune to the events that happened.

Because they were not used to the calidan type world for generations. Its like taking someone from the desserts of the Midwest and taking them to the east.

That's kind of the point though. How did the Fremen manage to fight effectively on planets with radically different ecosystems than Arrakis? In real life, the Viet Cong managed to bog down the technologically and organizationally superior U.S. military simply by using unfamiliar jungle warfare tactics. How did the Fremen manage to fight on such worlds? Especially since all you needed to do was blow up their Spice supplies and they were basically doomed, since they were severely addicted to the stuff.

Keep in mind, it was also the plan of Leto II to transform the Fremen into a purely decorative group

@@daniels7907 My guess is that they stayed sharp through constant warfare with the other planets. The Fremen of Paul's time were disciplined, and probably kept to their traditions despite the changing environments

+Liam Jordan - The problem is there is no indication of that in the novels. In fact, part of the reason that they make such a perfect army for Paul is that nobody living anyplace other than Arrakis had much concept of the Fremen as anything more than a few scattered tribes of desert-dwellers. That there were so many of them, and that they were such good fighters, was not well-known. At least partially because the Spacing Guild's control over space travel restricted the movements of armies. Which is why wars between Houses had to be carried out covertly and not threaten the Guild's interests.

Right. It's not clear from the quote who gets to call a generation 385 years, everybody or just nobility. But it's reasonable to assume that spice plays a part in it. It's not clear how much. It's possible every world measures their own generations and Caladan is enough of a paradise world that the average lifespan is absurdly long by our standards even without spice. It's also possible that spice use is common in lesser amounts in the lower classes giving them a longer life that way as well. That would make the generation even more of an "average" and it's possible that healthy nobility with access to the best medical care could easily expect to see 500 years of age. Or it could be an error that I'm reading to much into. At which point this doesn't matter so much. But if it isn't an error, the expected life spans of leadership change the story for everybody outside of Arrakis. I'm also assuming that most worlds are closer to Caladan then they are the Harkonnen world of Geddi Prime. It's not unreasonable to assume that those are the outside points on a quality of life graph. If the average world can expect to see members of a ruling family live for hundreds of years that's going to produce incredibly stable, almost stagnate government. The head of a household will be in their hundreds before they take over from somebody who was ruling for a hundred years. The death of a ruler would be a momentous event, rarely seen more then once in a commoners life time. Different worlds funeral traditions would vary, but it's safe to say that on any given world the death of a leader would result in months of morning, ritual, life celebration. Now comes the Jihad, it's not just that a great many worlds were taken over. It's that through out the galaxy this slow, stately, change of power would have been shattered on one world after another. This alone would cause a leadership crisis that the galaxy hasn't seen in it's very long living memory. It also means that when Leto II took over and brought everything under his control, it would at first be seen as a blessing. At least by the numberless hordes of the galaxy. It would be the stability they had stolen from them. And what's more, they wouldn't even know that things had changed for over 500 years at least.

@fitzdraco - Actually, we have to assume that the mortality rate among nobles must be very high. There is no other explanation for people with the (relative) youth of Duke Leto Atreides or Baron Vladimir Harkonnen being the heads of their Houses. You will also notice that most noble families that are given attention are oddly small. Baron Harkonnen at least had nephews. Duke Leto seemed to be the sole heir of House Atreides, which is why he wanted a son so badly (only males can rule the Houses). Given the longevity effects of the Spice, you would expect larger extended families, with still-living grandparents, great grandparents, great *great* grandparents and possibly more, along with many descendants and collateral lines that could inherit the House title. It's like Herbert just didn't want to clutter things up so he kept them implausibly simple.

I don't see what's so hard about it. There's Duke Leto who was born on Caladan and died on Arrakis, and there were two of Paul's children named Leto - the baby who was killed by the Sardaukar and the one who survived to become Leto II, the God Emperor. Some people get confused and insist that the God Emperor must be Leto III, but that's not how titles are inherited. They pass from generation to generation, not between siblings.

Slu p4life You are right. The Fremen turned into a hard people because they got the worst of both worlds. Both terrible rulers & living conditions.

Most assuredly, a world with such a ruler as the Siridar Baron Vladimir Harkonnen would not long last, as he and his entire family seem to gleefully revel in their sinister nature. The entire planet of Giedi Prime is an industrial wasteland, where the ecology is all but destroyed, and the primary export is gladiatorial sport. The Harkonnens acquiring the Golden Lion Throne on Kaitain would ensure the entire known Universe, with the lone exception of Arrakis, would meet the same fate. It was therefore necessary to remove the Harkonnens not only from power, but also from existence, leaving only Jessica, Paul, and Alia as the sole inheritors of the Harkonnen legacy.

The Emperor probably gave it the Harkonons and they strip mined it

Dr. McNelly and Frank Herbert were friends, and McNelly had Frank's approval for the Encyclopedia - with the understanding that books written later might contradict parts of the Encyclopedia. The Dune Encyclopedia covers the first four novels, and there were indeed elements of the fifth and sixth novels that contradicted some of the Encyclopedia.

I'm familiar with the broad strokes, what I mean is a deep dive into the Dune Encyclopedia could make for a great video.

Leto's troops were mostly wiped out in a day by the Sarduakar, so not so tough.

Leto saw the need to have a superbly-trained private fighting force, so he would have recruited not only from Caladan (not everyone there was soft and lazy), but from other worlds as well.

Keep in mind that Gurney and Duncan were both trained in Harkonnen slave pits, as gladiators, and they were the ones training the Atreides soldiers. Didn't do them any good though, in the end.

Caladan never seemed to face any serious threats. Even during Muad'Dib's Jihad the planet was untouched by war (because Paul refused the Fremen access to the planet). This is probably why House Atreides fell so easily to the Corrino/Harkonnen conspiracy.

House Atreides fell because the Harkonnens found a way to break the conditioning given to Suk doctors. They did this to Dr. Yueh, Duke Leto's personal physician, and he betrayed the family after they moved to Arrakis. Leto already knew the whole situation was a trap and he did his best to think and fight his way out of it. It just wasn't enough, and nobody suspected that Yueh could be the traitor.

Those wealthy enough to afford melange live at least a century longer, and are healthier in general, than those who can't afford it. How they live depends on what opportunities are available to them on their home worlds or wherever they end up traveling.

Very little. Herbert largely treats the ordinary people of the Known Universe as statistics to be referenced with regards to the actions of the great and powerful. It's reasonable to assume that some evolution has taken place, especially since people live on many planets with different biospheres. But there is seemingly a *huge* divide between truly enhanced humans that have been bred for abnormal levels of ability and regular people.
