I am so lucky that I started looking into Dune Imperium just after they released uprising. Bought the game and my wife and I have played it twice. We’ve won 1 game each. It’s a fantastic game and we don’t have any games like it. Apart from the obvious stuff(theme, worker placement) the thing that made me look into it was the small amount of victory points needed to win. Each point feels really important and well earned. Most of my games require a score of above 50 to win so this is a nice change. Great video guys
My solution is to wait a few months before buying to see how well expansions and base game cards are implemented. I guess people will try all sorts of combinations and maybe the most optimal one will emerge. I truly hope so....
I’ll admit, I didn’t buy the original but wanted to. Expansions came out and made it more difficult. Bought Uprising hearing all the news and reading designer diaries on BGG. Bought the base game to have those leaders and cards… They got me.
I would have appreciated clearer answers and opinions on whether you need this one if you have the original one. The idea that I got was that they wanted to say "no" but didn't want to hurt sales. You don't need to spend a big amount of money for what is, at best, a small upgrade to an amazing game.
Yeah not how they operate. The truth is that they love DI and it seems like DI:U is also an excellent game. I can ensure you they are not concerned with the sales, as evidenced by all the companies that won't give them review copies or make them wait. What do you do when you love one game and the company releases a brand new iteration of that game? I mean some folks change phones every year.
I agree with you on that. Dune Imperium is ranked #7 on BGG. The 2nd edition of it or newer version of it can have a little more discussion or fully expressed thoughts. Rush, rush, score it, next. I do appreciate the rating system though. :)
Awesome, now we all gotta sell off Dune Imperium and its expansions because Dune Uprising made them obsolete, kinda like how Clank! Catacombs did with Clank! and Clank! in Space.
Roy, I was happy that I got to play the game with you at Mr.Beast's Dune tournament and thanks for teaching me your game, Last Light, which is awesome by the way!!!
Looking forward to this one a lot, glad you touched on if we *need* both but I knew I'd own both and keep both, though we'll see which gets more play as time goes on
The new spies and mechanics around the combat cards clearly add complexity, but they also look like they open up the game alot more! I'll probably get and keep this and the original, where the original seems more combat-focused by comparison.
I feel like it makes more sense to compare it to just the base game, because since this also can use the expansions; that's really the main thing it's replacing.
@@mez561 I'm in your boat too having the expansions, but to me they seemed to answer that question. It's worth getting if you play a lot already. Roy said he wouldn't go back to using the original game. I assume he'd eventually bring in the expansions, but if he wouldn't even go back having not played the expansions w/uprising yet, I think that makes a pretty strong case. I can say, I'm much more likely to get it now whereas originally I wasn't as interested. My only concern now is fitting everything into the existing deluxe box. (I hear everything can fit except the original board).
Gonna lead with this has no shade whatsoever towards the Dice Tower. In fact, they're among the few reviewers and Dune: Imperium crowd pointing out what needs to be said. 20:08 This. This is why myself and all my D:I buddies got so ticked off the moment Direwolf announced this "stand-alone expansion." This is not a stand-alone expansion. It's clear from a 5-second glance at the announcement page that this game does not "expand" onto the base game - *it replaces it.* The components are the same with new pieces for balancing (or "lore" with the shield wall), the board makes changes to accommodate new pieces and more balancing, and they released a pack of new characters to fit the upcoming movie release (oh and for balancing). If they announced this along-side an upgrade pack for all the loyal fans, I'd have no complaints at all. Uprising could be the entry point for new players and the upgrade pack would be a show of good faith to everyone who already loves the original game. Let me clarify - if you've never gotten into Dune: Imperium before, now is the time to do so. This version is the only one you'll need unless you join the hardcore crowd in which case you'd truly only need the character mats. But if you got the original game with the expansions? Congrats, you bought into the test run. Time to buy the full release. Roy's right, people won't go back to the old one anymore. "Thanks for supporting us! We'll be back for a chunk out of your savings account in 3 years with the Ultimate Edition." - Direwolf, probably
I don't think a upgrade pack would be worth doing there is so much content in the box a few less player tokens, less starter decks and no resource tokens would not make the price that much cheaper. I would had liked it tho if the starter deck art was different would owning both would be more novel.
@@ThorAxiun ok, now everywhere says he will also adapt Messiah, but that was not in the original plans from what I remember, they even said if the first movie did not get the expected audience the second one would be scrapped. Lets hope they stop at 3 then, and not try to adapt all the dozens of books
The 6 player version is SOOOOO good! We play it every week. The length is not that bad if everyone k ows what they're doing and if you limit table talk.
I like the game. The only thing I would add, is a double sided turn track overlay that like turn 10 is presented, the turn ends on turn 11 or turn 12 or turn 13.😊
I don’t personally see Uprising as replacing what exists. As an avid DI fan there are some things I prefer about either version. After the initial binge of Uprising, I see myself regularly going back and forth between both modes, depending on the flavor of the day.
do you think just playing the old game (with ix and immortality) but switching the 'arrakis liaison' cards for the new bene geserit ones (with the two bene influence) and putting a sticker on the mentat space (2 emperor influence required) would work? i just want to play the old game but make the bene and emperor tracks worth visiting more.
@@pizdamatii5001 that’s an interesting idea. I think that’s a reasonable “house blend”, and I feel like there’s some room for that type of unofficial mixing and matching. I tend to prefer officially designed content so I personally would just stick with the different modes as designed.
I want to see a metalist or one from the designer, which details the home brew mega version, x cards from base, y cards from IX, z cards from Immortality; and something like “if using base and IX also use these cards” which wouldn’t be used unless you combine expansions. Like you can have a list of just Immortality cards to add but you may add more Immortality cards if you also add IX in the mix.
I completely agree with Chris. I love Dune Imperium BUT have only played it 13 times (over a little bit more than a year) and that's not enough to invest in this one. I even haven't bought the expansions for the first one because of that. I ' m going to up the playing rate of the first game before buying anything alse;-)
It's so weird what they did with this release. Is it too soon for what could be considered a Second Edition? It does just feel like a giant patch for the original game, which was already highly rated and praised.
@@Whoolzyourdaddy yeah its too obvious, maybe theyre told by dire wolf to not compare and not to say negative things especially "cash grab" , because business they didnt even say its more complex than the 1st one and ive noticed that they have a sneaky words to describe the word complex, all they have to say is "they give you more options" its pretty smart. i wish more people will not support this kind of practice, we already have game devolopers that cut their game just to sell expansions.
The TTR comparisons are absurd excuses to this release that feels terrible for people who have bought everything...Unmatched Adventures feels great. Every Dominion expansion feels great. This makes me feel like a sucker for buying the two expansions that came out LAST YEAR!
@@adamg4912 I've never understood this kind of reasoning. Does this product's existence somehow make the original game (with or without the expansions) somehow less enjoyable?
I own the original and this and it is OK. Dune is my favorite ip. Nothing wrong in that and also it is ok own just the original… You don`t need both. And i am also considering second deluxe set for this version and keep original with expansion and this second as separate games and put new expansions to this new version, if there will be any. If not, maybe buy second immortality for this version…
This is an expansion, it has Dune Imperium in the name. Direwolf could have simply excluded player pieces requiring the original and making this a new board expansion. There is no reason not to treat it as an expansion that now give you 2 boards to choose from. Uprising does not have everything D:I + expansions have. So I think TI3 vs TI4 comparison is invalid. Uprising doesnt take everything and then adds some. It removes plenty of stuff, and adds its own stuff. Think of this as a big board expansion for something like Ticket to Ride or Power Grid.
I personally would probably be frustrated if I had bought the first one and the expansions. But I didn’t so… I’m excited for this one and will skip the first lol. I think there was a better way to release this though. Maybe just call it 2.0 and offer a conversion kit (even in the box like mansions of madness did) for first edition stuff that works with it.
Why? I have gotten a ton of use and value out of my DI with expansions. The reality is this is, for this hobby, a fairly cheap game that will likely be available for cheaper in wider distribution. This game is 100% optional for someone who has the original DI.
@@thomgizziz What rationalization? I have had DI since it released, same with the expansions. I will likely get Uprising, but then I am not complaining about this at all. I am not rationalizing myself and calling someone names is never polite. Here is an idea, simply skip the comment next time if you cannot be polite or actually make a cogent point.
@@npckse8508 nah I didn’t mean it like I’d be upset at all the fun I had. I just mean how it’s kind of a weird second edition/alternate version/sequel to a game that came out only a few years ago. I’m glad you’ve had fun with it. I’m also personally glad I waited and will now get this one instead.
These sorts of things frustrate me more than excite me. Dune is my #2 all time, I have all the expansions and it’s my #2 played game as well. I want to get this but I just feel like it muddles my experience a bit. I know the expansions dont work as well, but the base game is “better”. Overall it just feels like a bit of a disappointment EVEN THOUGH I’m sure I will love the game.
You described the dilemma very well. It's nice that there's a better Dune Imperium base game, but it's problematic for us who bought all the original game's content and expansions. I'm just going to get the new game and figure out where to go from there.
@@PatrickWhite-pt2pn Its less of a fomo but more of completionist dilemma. I got a friend that would rather let go the game if he cant get everything it has to offer to get peace of mind.
Dune Imperium is #1 for me and I'm definitely excited for Uprising. I'm not sad if it makes some of the existing things a bit obsolete by being better because I've had years of fun with it.
The board completely changes how it plays. I do agree that it’s core mechanics are very similar, but the spies, board spaces, cards, and leaders make it variable. Direwolf was sneaky with this expansion. They are a business after all and they’re goal is to make as much money as possible.
I think the Dice Tower did a disservice to the viewers by not trying the expansions and then stating that the expansions would probably make it even better. I get the clear impression that, since the expansions were made for Dune Imperium, they will not work as well with Uprising. Testing that would be important since, in my opinion, it should detract from the score, especially because it would mislead buyers into buying suboptimal expansions.
Why? They reviewed this game "as is". At the end of the day, that is what I expect in a review. I am sure Roy or someone will do something to discuss this game with content from the other game, but I would always review this game as is first.
@@npckse8508 because the game, "as-is", has rules about integrating the expansions, and this is one of its selling points. It won't make the previous content obsolete, supposedly, because it integrates it. Does it really in a good way? That's something I believe the review should cover
@@sebastiaoalmeida7796 Honestly, I read the pdf of this on BGG and was not impressed. It was more like a "you could do this if you wanted to" but it didn't read as something that would make the game better. I imagine this whole mix content is really just to try an assuage those upset about this announcement. The pdf didn't seem like they gave much thought to this.
Firstly, the MASSES have spoken… about their strong unhappiness with Dire Wolf. Secondly, to assume that Dire Wolf didn’t plan these releases is ________. Competent companies PLAN their projects, budgets, deadlines. *So this company planned & published the 1st edition, the 2 expansions, the deluxe upgrade, & the dreadnoughts upgrade… & then now published this 2nd edition (?!!) *. Dire Wolf really one up their loyal customers. (I also think how much time they spent to play test) Thirdly, even in this 2nd edition, there are alot of nooks & crannies in the rules & iconography that can be improved. Eg warrior icon is still the cube… (but in this 2nd edition, they decided to provide miniature & wooden Sandworm???) Lastly, thematics.. so of it doesnt make sense. Eg the Sandworm, given its such a gigantic creature is only worth strength 3?? But can give you double the combat rewards?? From where?
Hmm. Sounds much more of a mixed bag to me than the review suggests: - The spies sound like a great addition - The set collecting with the combat cards sounds awful. Likely too much luck and not thematic at all - Adding the sand worms is great in principle. But double combat rewards ? Why ? No thematic justification for that and basically obliges everyone to use sandworms. Also, it brakes with the overall Dune theme as I don’t recollect that the various houses controlled sandworms - And the shield wall sounds like an unnecessary complication The biggest issue is why did they do it in such a convoluted way ? Many games have little flaws. Live with it, Dune in its initial form is still an awesome game and now they somehow created a mess.
I get the impression the shield wall is a patch for a patch. Like, they HAD to put in the worms, because they are in the new movie. But they couldn't just give the worms to one character, so they give to everyone. But then the worms are OP, so they create the shield wall mechanic to balance them.
I bet they are going to start expanding it with something that buffs the factions they haven't made expansions for yet (emperor, maybe this was already the fremen expansion)
I haven’t played the first one. You mentioned characters that were held back for this version. Are there any characters missing from this version that were in the first? If so, is that disappointing to someone really into the theme?
just w8 when more people played the game,, they made it more complex which for me is a bad idea, what makes the 1st one great is its easy to teach and learn, for me this is just a cash grab
@@TpDgreat I might be upset by the “cash grab”if I owned one already. But as someone looking to buy I still want to get the best one. I will definitely wait a bit for more reviews to be available
@@codym6376 good point, but sometimes easier games are better well mostly XD ,,but man! that board is much better to look at, now u need to put hooks and worms on that board and thats alot, battles will be less i guess by the looks of it, its newer and its 1.5 patch u cant go wrong with each one lets fight the Fomo and wait hahah
Honestly... If you still have to change basic worker placement spots after 2 expansions, you're not doing it right or you just want to get more money out of it every time and I'm actually tired of that. If your game is super popular and has been in the BGG top 50 in no time, I might be able to understand 1 expansion to fine-tune, but more is not necessary and has an adverse effect for me. But that's just me :-)
Indeed that is a weird way to release a product. I am very hyped for it (after playing the base one at least couple hundred times) - and I have everything imaginable for it (apart from overblown Premium upgrade - I use my own, self-made agents, acrylic custom made markers). The biggest annoyance is that my neoprene mat is now useless for it. So, all things considered it is Dune 2.0 is many, many ways. Rise of IX expansion is not THAT compatible with it at all, Immortality is totally fine, alternating Research Station may actually be better for the game (otherwise there's too many troop generating areas - ESPECIALLY Uprising's research station can lead to both combat VP and Spice Must Flow VP in a single turn.
why would you get neoprene mat if it does not add anything better to the game, and does not fit in the box? People buy too much useless expensive mats nowadays. 💁♂
@@Duracelbunny Well, I disagree. It makes the setup faster, I don't have overlapping cardboard board upgrades, it looks way better than the base game board, it's resistant to liquids and scratches so remains nicer looking for longer. Also, nothing wrong with making the game yo play almost exclusively look nicer. Obviously you are right this is in no way needed, but if my emotional response to it is better, why would I consider that "no value"? Why buy better clothes if the cheapest ones are perfectly fine, right? Why play board games in the first place, if you want to take it a step further?
I hate that this is different enough, but still overly similar, since I just picked up Dune Imperium and an expansion not long ago. Sure I can own both, but why milk it so. Oh because publishers love to feed into the fetish of board gamers needing everything and deluxe-ifying every component in some way shape or form. I hate it cause I fall into that trap… uhh this hobby requires short term loans at this point. I wonder if this is a similar situation to King of Tokyo and New York. New York was an improved game, but the simplicity of Tokyo is what winded up being the better experience and most supported
I feel that, every worker placement space is different besides basion, arrakeen and secrets. But most of the changes are slightly different so a lot of the original board design is there which makes it feel more like a updated board than a new board. But the worms, spys, and space quest things are new things.
Yeah I run from companies that feed on a fans addictions. I stopped reading Marvel in the 90s when I realized they were going to link in every comic to every other comic as soon as they figured out how much they could milk from us with Infinity Gauntlet. These days I am very careful with which board games I buy for the same reason.
The Immorality expansion was reviewed here less than a year ago, and it hasn't even been released in my country yet. Despite this, Uprising is already hitting stores. Since it's the same game with improved mechanics, I don't see how Standard Imperium and Uprising can share the shelf. If I want to play the better Dune Imperium experience, why would I play the first one? It doesn't make any sense to me. Right now, I don't think I will buy the Immorality expansion because without Uprising, I am not going to have the best Dune Imperium experience possible. I think it's just a matter of time. Releasing a Dune Imperium 1.5 less than a year after an expansion and only three years after the first game looks like a bad move because it doesn't seem different enough.
My answer is that DI:U is not objectively better than DI. Seems to me DI with expansions is an excellent game and experience. This could be as well, but it doesn't change the fact that DI itself is an excellent game. I mean it sold gobs before the expansions were even released.
But how do you know for sure it's improved ? More is not always better. I for my part am very sceptical about the worms which can potentially give you 5 VPs in a single battle, half the amount needed to win.
I am one of those people who wasn't a big fan of Imperium. I Iiked it less and less with every play. Some spaces we're pretty useless or used once a game and money/spice also had very limited use. Pretty random conflict cards that might grant you VP or Just some Ressources..and some other Points. Thus sounds like it would fix some of my issues.
@@haukionkannelSometimes small changes in key areas can make a big difference. I didn't like Wingspan very much but I really like Wyrmspan. I liked DI good enough but it didn't blow me away. All changes I see in DI:U seem to improve the experience in all areas I wasn't so keen on.
I get why so many people hate the idea of a second basegame which is not really a sequel. But I feel like they had no other choice. Dune: Imperium with both expansions already was somewhat cluttered. The Imperium deck was so bloated by the first expansion, that they had to implement an alternative deck for deck building. So a third expansion would either overkill the Imperium deck making it even harder to build a cohesive deck or introduce yet another deck. And dont even get me started on the overlay tiles for the basic board. With Uprising they have the chance to streamline the game again and they probably already have plans for expansions in order to implement them in a smoother way. Either way, one of the games will absolutely be obsolete (which is a shame) for every given group simply because they are basically the same game with minor differences.
It's not the fact they did this, it's *how* they did it. They literally just released 2 expansions last year before they did this rug pull. When Dominion finally released the 2d editions (8 years after the original game), they ALSO released these small affordable Update Packs for the fans who have been with them since the beginning. Gestures like that feel great. This doesn't. And consider the fact that Unmatched Adventures is fully compatible with everything you already own or that King of New York/King of Monster Island are SO different from the original that they really are an entirely new game. This is far too similar to the original, making it a Second Edition rather than a new game.
This really feels like a 2nd edition. For gimmicks Uprising includes spies, contracts, and worms, while the base board has foldspace. I don't know if I'm going to return to the base board. Maybe if some parts of the first two expansions don't mix well with uprising or if I get nostalgic for carthag/hardy warriors or heighliner giving two water.
Don't forget the 7 Solari rush or all the Mentat shenanigans. It feels unpopular at this point but I still think the base game is a lot more elegant and "casino-friendly".
Dune Imperium is played In casinos as part of the World series of boardgames. Many other games are played there too. A game only really works there if it is super focused and elegant. Not saying Uprising lacks good design ethos or elegance, but more so that the base game is a lot more pure and easier to teach. Casino friendly feels right for games which have an elegant footprint. Not too many sideboards, easy to set up, moderate playtime to complexity ratio. Tight rules et al.... Uprising's struggle to interpolate the base game cards/leaders into Uprising lends the game a certain inelegance. The rulebook's instructions for such a task are very loose and "up to you" sort of vibe which can lead to 100 people having 100 different versions of Uprising depending on how they add cards/use certain leaders. Not casino friendly.
Great review guys, it would be good if you could reinforce how the expansions work with the new base, do you have to take any cards out, for example? Thx
Keep it, they made this game more complex now, what makes imperium great is its easy to teach, 1st one is better, i feel u i bought my game a year ago , this is a cash grab, just w8 when everyone played the game, :)
Another question. I used to own but didn't love the original Dune Imperium; I personally felt like too much of the mid- to end-game rotated around winning conflicts. Do you feel like with the changes to combat: matching cards, reduction in combat related points, potential catch-up with the sand worms, and more openness in the board with spies, etc., that it's worth investing in now or again given that I had mixed feeling before?
@@enzocrespin5806 No, I think he's actually talking about Immortality. The new track gives 2 more VPs, plus all of the rewards and cards are ways to win by other means than conflict. Combat is a big part of Ix (dreadnaughts).
@@enzocrespin5806 Perhaps you're right, but a lot of the VPs from tech come from combat (e.g. the one where you can sacrifice your dreadnaught if you win to get a VP).
My most burning question is: which is the best combination of Dune Imperium with Ix or Immortality, or the new Uprising with Ix or Immortality, or some other combination?
I'm getting the new one for Christmas but for imperium it depends. If you like the combat aspect more then ix will be the expansion that suits you better with new characters and dreadnoughts. However, if you prefer to focus on deck building, combos, and more strategy outside of combat, then immortality is what you want I love them both but ix is slightly higher for me.
I have the original and no expansions but i have the deluxe box..im tempted to wait and find this on sale andnthen swap out the original for the new but use the nicer box/minis
The upgrade pack would include 95% of full uprising.. no point and it would not even be cheaper… Same as with Gloomhaven vs Gloomahaven2. The price difference is / would be nil.
Great review. Preordered this, Dune 1 is a 10, one of the greatest games ever. I love that the game industry is starting to do sequels instead of expanding a game to death.
This just doesn't feel honest to the fans who have loved and supported the first game. What part of this couldn't have been a new expansion or an add-on of sorts? Ark Nova didn't charge us full price again for new maps, cards and mechanics, and neither should Dune.
Thanks for the review. I feel like Dire Wolf has been getting a lot of negative reaction to releasing this and I just don't get it. It's a cool alternate board and content, it's another version of the game. Cool! It doesn't invalidate the first one at all. Dune Imperium is literally in the top 10 bgg. Either get excited about more content, or forget that exists and enjoy what's already out!
Imagine you just went all-in on Dune Imperium and within a couple months this was announced and your play group now just wants to play this version and not the original. That’s a pretty feel-bad scenario and a common one when these sort of standalone v1.5 games come out.
@@draheim90 I mean this is a very real thing across not only video games, but phones and other electronic devices. The difference here is that Dune Imperium is excellent and doesn't NEED to be replaced. That voice that suggests you have been robbed or wronged somehow....don't listen to it. Enjoy what you have, because it is an excellent game.
Someone explain to me why this and the last version gets rated so high? I find i just get flarked by the terrible cards i get which reveals better cards for others to get...
I'm glad they made it a stand-alone since the original required expansions to be great so I never got it. This one seems like the perfect edition which I already preordered and can't wait to dive into. Standalone expansions are sometimes the better option, especially for audience that doesn't already own the base game.
Couldn't stop thinking about how you called it a rabbit. The tiny creature is a muad'dib, where Paul gets his Fremen name. It was also hilarious listening to y'all try to pronounce CHOAM.
The refinements look great, but at least for now, I'll be sticking with Dune Imperium and Rise of Ix. I've already felt this game is overpriced and spending another $60 is just not in the cards. There are better values including Lost Ruins of Arnak and its expansions. I'd rather spend the $60 on horizontal, rather than vertical, expansion of my game collection. For those who don't own the original, this looks like the one to get.
