I’m still surprised that so many people don’t understand his rationale for marrying the princess. This universe is all about politics. He’s marrying her to lend legitimacy to his claim to the throne. His claim at this point is tenuous at best. He’s having to force the Great Houses at this point, not to mention being recognized by the Spacing Guild and the Bene Gesserit. He has zero legitimacy unless he marries the daughter.
He just killed the emperor's champion, silenced the reverend mother and already leads two houses, not to mention forced the emperor to kiss his ring, wouldn't exactly call his claim illegitimate lol
@@jcs1025 likely formalities, but it may also just be cuz he knows that's what his future self did, and certain events would only play out if he follows the same path his future self did, he's not happy abt any of the decisions he's made cus he knows what they'll lead to, I followed the books a long time ago so I don't remember everything in detail but he had a goal he was trying to achieve and marrying the princess was part of "the only path" to take
@@ridgefrost do you understand what "legitimacy" means in this context? you're kind of driving his point home. it doesn't matter what his abilities are and what he's able to do or what he has done....he can't become a LEGITIMATE Emperor unless he marries the Emperor's daughter....that's how he usurps his throne. same way of thinking of it like this....Superman, despite all his power and literally being deemed a god among man within his universe, he can't just wake up one day and say "I'm President of The United States" and it be legitimate. now sure he can use brutal force to make that happen, but it won't be "legitimate". but what he can do is genuinely run for president and force everyone in the United States to vote for him in order to bypass all the waiting and campaigning and the tedious hard work that it would take that'd make the process longer. which is what Paul does here, he just takes a short cut and forces the Emperor to give his daughter away, so Paul has a LEGITIMATE right to the throne.

That just makes him a usurper That’s like saying Robert Baratheon from game of thrones was legitimate just because he beat the tagaryens and even then he had some Targaryen blood to give him a claim and yet still couldn’t get full support. If you cut out every scene where Chani is pulling her "I'm smart, you're all stupid fools to believe this" the movie loses absolutely nothing, and is a better watch.
Well idk. What the dune movies are really good at doing are setting up for the next movie. Chani talking about not believing in the Lisan gives us info that the older ppl believe in it, while the younger ones dont, creating a division within the Fremen. I have a feeling itll come more into play next movie due to Paul now fully becoming the lisan
I completely disagree. The message of the book is to demonstrate the power of prophecies and false messiahs which would have been lost without Chani’s character.
