Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, primarily covering the first half of the book. Set in the far future, it follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
The film is the third adaptation of Dune following David Lynch's 1984 film, which was a critical and commercial failure, and John Harrison's 2000 miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and TV rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. The writers incorporated an updated 21st-century sensibility into the script, including increasing the prominence of female characters. Like the two-part film It (2017), production contracts were only secured for the first film, relying on its success before a second film would be greenlit. Filming took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.
Dune premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021. Warner Bros. Pictures theatrically released it in 2D, 3D and IMAX internationally on September 15, 2021. It was simultaneously released theatrically and streaming on HBO Max on October 22, 2021. It was generally well received by critics for its visuals, scope, and ambition, and has grossed over $331.1 million worldwide on a production budget of $165 million. A week after its domestic release, Dune: Part Two was confirmed with a planned release in October 2023.

Dune doesn't get enough credit for setting the stage of the modern science fiction. The true "space opera" that we all came to love in the 90s and 2000s. I doubt mass effect would even exist if it wasn't for this.

Clearly, the movies are not the original Dune saga, but a director's story based loosely on the Dune saga. While the actors have done a good job so far, and I assume will continue to do so, I am beginning to wonder if the finished product will actually be Frank Herbert's Dune in anything but name?

Although I found the movies watchable, changing characters for stupid reasons, and altering plot lines, has led to something not Dune, maybe based on the novel Dune. The more they change, the more it strays from the original story, ever widening the gap, and unable to return. It's sad, as many of these changes were done just to appease the squeaky wheels, that insist on their lives/lifestyle be incorporated into all entertainment.

Paul's first son Leto was killed during the Imperial raid on Sietch Tabr. The next film is going to be mostly based on Dune Messiah. Without Chanity, Paul finds himself dealing with his worst fear . The fear is due to Paul's visions of a series of future events which lead to the Golden Path. Due to his fear of the Golden Path, Paul forgets that his son Leto 2 is at the center of the Golden Path. Leto 2 is name after his grandfather Leto 1

Which just goes to show that omitting or inserting small changes can disrupt the storyline so much, that it becomes difficult to get back on track. That is because making prophecies come to pass by deliberate action is hard - even if you have a detailed text to follow. 😁

I disliked what was done to Stilgar's character far more than Chani. In the book he was practical, a leader and Paul's superior when he was just another foot soldier of the fremen. He made a deal with Paul in the first book, he would help Paul become emperor and Paul would turn dune into a paradise. He was not the gullible emotional true believer shown in the films. Chani's changes make more sense, the books were written decades ago and while advanced for the era there were still certain assumptions regarding women that are just awkward. That said this is still hardly a feminist manifesto, given the focus on women as incubators of the next generation.

I agree, they made Stilgar into this clown. He was such a capable leader in the books. I felt like they did all the Fremen a disservice. Many were like Stilgar and were committed to Paul not because of religion or prophecy but because of what he had promised to do for them if they helped him. I wish they paid more attention to detail with the plot and politics. I enjoyed the movie, but it is definitely not an adaptation of the book, it is a very beautiful summary.

👇🚨🚨🚨Spoilers!!🚨🚨🚨👇 I think The twins will be born and show up after the war. Making them about 12 year old. Somehow Paul find out about them, maybe throw his sister? Paul does have a special bond with his son. So maybe knowing they are alive somewhere could be the reason he never has children with the princess because he already has an air to the throne. Perhaps she doesn't believe him or try's to convince his that the twins do not qualify because they are illegitimate children. I wonder if Idaho will come back or if the will switch him with Feyd Rautha?

I wouldn't call it part three, that implies that the DUNE movie had three parts, which is incorrect. it should be Dune Messiah. I like the 1st Movie DUNE part 1 and part 2. Can't wait for the next movie.

As I said elsewhere in this thread: He strayed a little bit to make it more practical. Otherwise we would have had to wait YEARS to start filming for the main characters to age appropriately. By then, some may have become entrenched in other projects or otherwise away, and the momentum of the films could be lost ( and the financing for a part iii with it ). Villeneuve did the 100% right thing.

I liked Dune Part 1 but I thought Dune Part 2 started straying from the Frank Herbert vision towards the end. Perhaps Villeneuve couldn't work out how to fit Alia into the movie and I have no idea what Chani was supposed to be doing. If there is a Dune 3 let's hope it doesn't stray too far from the original stories.

The changes are bad, for the reason that Dune is not just a book but a testament on the motivations of man. Taking a character, especially a main character and making them do things differently needs to have a motivation in Dune, it does in the book. The movie seems to want to make changes just to be different. Paul learns why his father didn't marry his mother, this motivates him to do the same, the wife being Chani and the actual married partner is the emperor's daughter. Paul was clear to chani in the book that she would be his only love and wife even though he would be technically married to the emperor's daughter, there is no motive to withhold this from chani

I hope that the reason Chani storms off is NOT because she is pissed that Paul is going to marry Irulan. I would prefer it be because she is deeply afraid that the prophecies are true and what it will mean for her and the future. Remember that she is something of an atheist coming from the position that the prophecies are just made up stories designed to shackle the minds of the people. It was the view Frank held more or less - in particular to prime them to follow one man. Now in Star Wars, there was a simple (single?) prophecy that someone will arise to bring balance to the force. So any old/young person could say, "I am he" and how could you know one way or another? The ideal should be: "Any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king" - Tywin Lannister Applied here, it would mean that for prophecies to serve their purpose, it should be self-evident to anyone familiar with them that "This guy fits the bill." So when Stilgar says that there is apparently a prophecy that the Lisan al Gaib will deny what he is due to humbleness - well, I personally thought that was a bad prophecy design. It would be better to have that rephrased to "He will deny that he is until he becomes," or something mystical sounding like that. 😅 Now I believe that Dennis was trying to follow that line. That the prophecies are made up and that everyone is plotting to make the prophecies happen. Except of course that Paul really does have what I am going to call time-sight. And the way that the prophecies are structured in this version, there are a number of things that would be completely outside of Paul and Jessica's ability to control even before he took the water of life. He couldn't control that he would summon an enormous worm on his first try. He couldn't control that Chani's fremen name was Desert Spring. Heck, he couldn't actually control that he wouldn't die outright if he took the water of life. And recall that he knew how to expertly wear the stillsuit without being shown. In other words, they have a prophecy checklist and they are going, "check, check, check...." "Any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king" - because he shouldn't have to. It must eventually become self-evident. Has it become self-evident to Chani. Unfortunately, I do not think they will follow this line. But it will be interesting to see if Dennis will be able to extricate the story from the pickle that Frank put it in by on the one hand, portraying that the prophecies are made up and them fulfilling them. Quran 3:81 When God made a covenant with the prophets, He said, Here is the Book and the wisdom which I have given you. When there comes to you a messenger fulfilling that [predictions about him in their Scripture] which is with you, you must believe in him and help him. Do you then affirm this and accept the responsibility I have laid upon you in these terms? They said, We will affirm it. God said, Then bear witness, and I will bear witness with you (Wahiduddin Khan Translation)

Why? Why cant people come up with original content. They remake a movie, remake the sequel, then make 3 more new ones that completely destroy the entire studio/franchise. Heavily injecting current politics, and niche sexuality into a classic film turns it into propaganda. Thats not the kind of "escape" moviegoers are looking for. It is stupid to piss in the face of your fan base for no reason. Why get rid of Chani? Why ignore the spacing guild, they are the ones most dependent on the spice? Why get rid of the sonic weapons that so threatened the Emperor? It makes no sense to change the story and piss off the fans who are expecting to see what they loved about the books or previous movies. As someone that has read the books and watched both the previous movie and the Sci-Fi channel's miniseries that went through to the "Children of Dune". The Sci-Fi channel was the best, and the recent Dune movies are overrated and would have done poorly if the quality of recent films was not so abysmal.

$750 million says otherwise 🤔. It should be obvious it's a Massive world and would of probably taken a trilogy of 3 × 3.5 hour films. They DID touch on the Spacing Guild, the importance of spice for them etc but they only touched upon it. This is why they ADAPT films , give them to screen writers and in most cases chunks are thrown out. Pick and choose what to keep in. Personally IMHO on thought they were brilliant ✌️👍, and obviously modern effects will enhance it. I didn't care much for the lynch film 👎, the casting was dreadful, Kyle MacLachlan was just wet , No ooomph at all, Sooo lost in his debut, although not a massive part Sting 😂, was Terrible, I thought Oscar Issac was much better than jurgen Prochnow 🤔. No wonder it lost $20 million. I know it's old by today's standards but it had a TV movie feel about it. People keep banging on about the books and obviously that's the " source material" but We are talking about Denis Villeneuve FILMS, a commercial and critical Success 😉✌️. Watched them at the Cinema and have both on UHD 4K. Already watched them 3-4 times and they are a much loved addition to my Library 👍. Even the Three film LOTR had a lot taken out !!. It's called " timing constraints " for anyone that's curious as to why screenplays differ from source material 😮😉✌️ PS someone said they didn't use " sonic weapons" like the Lynch film, BUT remember that wasn't in the Book, just outa Lynch imagination 🤔

@@viktorwolf5518 No is not. Villeneuve's version is just able to use a lot of technical tricks, that weren't available in the oder versions of the movie. This version was made for people without any knowledge of the books and that like to watch "bling, bling" on screen. The Universe of Dune was one in war with technology and computers. The two biggest powers - The Guid and the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood - worked always in secrecy and behind the curtains. So that society was the exact opposite of what we are, and partially to what this version of the movie showed on screen.

With all the changes, why even bother calling it Dune? Why even bother saying that it is based on a book. If it is going to be changed that much, then just get a writer to write out an original screenplay and make that film instead. I loved the visuals in both movies so far, but that is as far as it goes. It is too far from the source material to consider it as Dune.

Exactly. If I have to see another scene of her scowling or being absurdly aggressive and arrogant, I'll scream. She was the only thing off for me in the entire movie. Chani was not the doubter in the book. Why they have make her so uncooperative and angry I'll never understand. It's as though feminist activists cannot conceive of being cooperative as important. It's just nonstop anger, dominance, superiority, scowling - and boring AF.

What is the point of these major changes to characters and plots? I get cutting somethings out but these seem like changes just because... It is already bad enough they made Vladimir a dark, brooding goth and Kynes is now a woman

As soon as I saw how Chani was acting in the first film it no longer was the book. This is some woke writers version of the Dune Universe.

I guarantee you I'm more conservative than you, and this film ( and Chandni's reaction to Paul's avtions ) is NOT woke. I HATE what the likes of Disney are doing to our favorites. But this is NOT a wake adaptation.

I think many people won't like "Dune 3." In the second book, Frank Herbert makes it clear that Paul isn't a hero. Despite his admirable traits, Paul is ultimately just another conqueror.

I guess Denis Villeneuve has got different idea about finishing Dune Saga with classic three episode maybe will more then three who says it should be only three for Sagas. Maybe more four, five or six. Dune perfectly fits that kind of Sagas which have many more stroies and materials can produce more then three episode easly. Think about Alien Saga, Marvels films, Star Wars etc .

Too much has been changed in the name of wokeism. They completely ignored the culture of the Fremen and tried to make out they were liberal activists. Liet Kynes would never had been a woman and the leader of the Fremen given that leadership is decided by combat, Chani would never had gone against Paul or dissented with him or the Fremen and their ways. Denis claimed he thought the gender of Liet Kynes didn't matter, then he changed it, why, sophistry, nothing more. Alia killed Baron Harkonnen, Paul and Chani's first son was killed by the Harkonnens prior to the Baron being killed. Instead of trying to change and wreck well loved stories, they should come up with their own. Lazy, unoriginal writers. BTW, Jason Momoa was a poor choice for Duncan Idaho, they should have chosen someone that can actually act.

ALWAYS put " In my humble opinion", I very much doubt you have ever worked on a film so it's your opinion. People never appreciate the massive undertaking that is involved in making a massive studio production,even a 10 million Indie film. I've worked on a lot of both film and television but not in a Snr position IE DP,Sound or Lighting etc etc but construction of sets under the Set Design team. Every production is as complicated as a military operation. From Catering , accommodation, transportation and that's just the start. It would take me an hour to explain the process. Anyway I digress WTF is this video about. It starts with " Don't you think Dune 3 is perfect" er ??? NO !!! , because not one second of film has been shot.It won't be out till Dec 26 or maybe Spring 27!. So what do they know ?? Nothing. Only content from the book but most people know you have to adapt it into A SCREEN PLAY 🤔. So this is mostly assumption. Ok to end FACT most people loved Villeneuve's Dune 1 and 2. Much better than the original, obviously the effects are better but all remakes are. If better than the film then it's a lot lot better than the cheap cheesy TV series with a horrible lead actor. Dune did well ,got high critical acclaim and good audience feed back and score. Obviously something the size of the Dune world you have to pick and choose what to use. Otherwise you add another hour about the Spacing Guild etc and end up with a four hour film or Three 3 hour films. Villeneuve is probably the best film maker alive. In my humble opinion 😉✌️

I was very disappointed in the second Dune film. Especially with the end, concerning Chani. They ruined one of the most critical plot points that comes in later books. And now Chani won't be with Paul in Dune Messiah? The other disappointment, is Paul killing the Baron Harkonnen rather than Alia. I probably won't bother seeing Dune Three.
