DUDE, I can’t even fathom what I just witnessed with this movie yesterday. Truly one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen. This is a new bar for Sci-Fi storytelling.
I legit cried during this film because I didn't think what I saw could ever be possible in my lifetime. Dune Part Deux set the freaking bar. Shai halud set the bar.
I thought Timothee had beefed up or grown some inches between films. He didn’t. He just embodied this power and drive by the end of the movie, his presence took up more space.
Saw it at an advanced screening last night and YES the reviews are not exaggerating this is 100% a MONUMENT of film making , It took me hours to process what I had just seen it truly felt like I had just seen a MASTERPIECE , A feeling I have not had since seeing Return of the King with my dad aged 11 years old. I do not see ANY other film this year getting anywhere near touching this film , Best Picture 2025 incoming !!!
@@grim_2000 yeah, why not? Let’s face it, there was always going to be changes adapting Dune from book to film. It to me seems interesting and leaves me wondering where they go with it next. Changes that Denis made seems super interesting to me, from Chani to Alia. I went into this film expecting some changes for sure. I’m not sure why people expect an adaption to film page for page, when has this ever been done in the history of movie making?
@@grim_2000 to say that I “prefer” the changes would be wrong, I will always have the book. I just think that the changes made for this film works really well. As long as Chani doesn’t lead the Fremen uprising against Paul, I think we are good.
For me, Dune II is the most incredible cinematic experience I've had since LotR: The Return of the King. If Dune II does not win every category it is nominated for at the next Academy Awards (and it should be nominated for about 15), then the Oscars truly are irrelevent.
The Oscars are irrelevant anyways but this movie winning Oscar for Best Picture would be a joke. Part 2's never really win Oscars (Two Towers didn't win) and it's nowhere near the level of LOTR in terms of story telling.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I can't wait for Villeneuve's take on "Rendezvous with Rama". I feel I need to keep repeating it so that it really happens one day.
More like pure Holly wood cash grab. The producers didn't have the guts to be faithful to the book. The book is way gnarlier, they were afraid people wouldn't be able to handle it so they eliminated the more shocking elements. It was seriously watered down and made into a typical Marvel superhero movie. Ugh
@@pardeeplace4480Of course, nobody could be completely faithful to the books. As a big Hollywood-production it was better than the first part and better than a lot of recent sci-fi-fantasy-films. That's of course due to the quality of the source-material, but besides some shortcomings (for example some anti-climactic fight-scenes at the end) it was very engaging, thrilling and didn't feel like 2 hours 40 minutes.
This comment section is insane, with all the "Nah, it was meh." or "Denis failed Dune fans" comments. Like... I've no idea what to tell you. Personally, I am not a "fan" of the books... I am a book-Dune fanatic, to the point of having read EVERY translation to my mothertongue, along with the original multiple times. This book led me to choose my first university path (sociology of religion). When I had panic attacks as a teenager, I used to recite the litany against fear. From the bottom of my heart, this movie is almost perfect. Did it cut out plot threads I love? Sure. Quite a lot, actually. There is no other way to adapt a book of this density without making a full-blown series with an astronomical budget. So the creators made trade-offs: we do not see Thufir plotting as prisoner of the Harkonnen, but we DO spend time (unlike in the books) living wih the Fremen, with their tensts, banter, coffee sets and all. We see them actually fight against technologically-superior troops. Did it change the role of Chani? Yes, a lot. And with good reasons to do so. Did Stilgar crack jokes in the books? No. But we've heard Paul lament losing a friend as he became a worshipper. Here, on screen, we could SEE this friendship. And my god did Javier Bardem deliver the perfect balance of human-heartedness and fanaticism! It was not Denis Villeneuve's job to translate the books exactly 1:1, ever scene, every dialogue. To think otherwise is brain-dead. Instead, what we got was the true story and magic of my most beloved book translated into the language of a movie. And I could not be more happy about it. I'm gonna see it a couple of times more while it runs on the big screen.
I agree wholeheartedly! I almost never wanted to see a film more than once in the cinema, but this film is an exception. It's not perfect, because that's not possible, but consistent and engaging. 😊
I've read the book 5 times in my 33 years on this planet, when I saw Part 1 I was also gobsmacked (Londoner here). It was like they ripped what I saw in my head and threw it on a screen. I'm so so excited for this film, already have a couple of viewings booked.
I've never enjoyed a sci-fi movie this much since Star Trek (2009) And haven't felt so emotional about sequel since The Two Towers. Dune: Part Two is a cinematic masterpiece
He’s correct about pacing of the movie. The movie was 3 hours long but I was so immersed in it and the pacing/editing of the movie was so perfect that it did not feel like 3 hours. Perfect pacing.
Denis V and Alex Garland, modern Sci-Fi masters. We cannot disregard Garland just bcs Denis made the definitive Sci-Fi blockbusters. He is a master in his own right. His movies are on a much smaller scale, but he's as great as Denis is at helming Sci-Fi stories.
Nope He is nowhere near Denis Villeneuve. He hasn't done at least a good indie film. Neither is Zack Synder. If you cannot master smaller films you cannot master bigger films. It is as simple as that.
This was one of the best films ive ever seen. The mystery. The music. The action. The acting. Brilliant. And the next day i couldnt stop thinking about the hidden messages and central themes... family.. religions.. etc.
My 16 year old daughter loves cinema. She and I saw it yesterday and were both stunned. I told her this movie gave me the same feelings I had coming out of seeing Empire Strikes back as an 8 year old in 1980.
Saw it tonight and it's a masterpiece. As a fan of the books, I agree that the changes that were made for this film worked well, and in particular the character journey that they have Chani on works great, and will provide a more natural transition to Chani from the later books.
The moment of the close up on Paul's ankle as his foot finds it's steady placement then allowing him to confidently stand up . . . the Hans Zimmer Dune Theme hits for the first time in part 2, then the cut to the Fremen's shock & passionate awe of applause as they cheer on his unbelievably exciting achievement . . . . Confident & successful control in riding the biggest Sandworm they've ever witnessed. THAT IS A NEW HIGH IN CINEMATIC GLORY!
Words will never truly be able to express my admiration feelings that I felt leaving the theater last night after seeing Dune Part Two. To even call it Masterpiece feels to simplistic. This is truly why we go to the Movies. Many Filmmakers are asked "Why did you decide to make movies? What got you into Cinema?" There will be someone one day(a kid now) who will say "Dune Part Two". Denis conquered his White Whale. This was a true masterclass of filmmaking.
Just got out of the film here in Australia. I am speechless of what I just saw, simply breathtaking. This will be talked about for years and years to come.
This soon to be trilogy of movies respects the audience so much. If you didn't like either of the films, that's totally okay. You're not a moron, it just didn't click for you and that's fair, but as far as I'm concerned for me Part 2 was an unforgettable experience in the cinema. I feel so lucky to be alive to experience these movies. Bring on Part 3!!
I loved the scenes on Giedi Prime and the fight scene between Timothy Chalamet and Austin Butler was amazing. The speed and ferocity they were fighting with was intense in a way not seen in a long time.
Dune is the perfect example of: Being requested to direct a movie VS requesting to direct a movie. Denis Villeneuve only directs movies that he wants to direct and presents that to studios!
Look I have never heard of dune before but let me TELL YOU! This movie is probably in my top 5 movies of all time. It had everything you want a movie to have.
When the Harkonnen soldiers started to levitate up to the peak at the beginning it surprised me and was very interesting and awe-inspiring, that's for sure.
Dune part 2 is this generation’s “Empire strikes back”. The potential trilogy as a whole could be considered this generation’s LOTR if it concludes on a high note. It’s that good in my opinion.
Just WOW 🤯 Never thought since LOTR that we would get cinema like this again… I was wrong. Dune 2 is a masterpiece. Unfortunately has made me accept what people have been saying… how far Star Wars has fallen since the original trilogy, under Disney it could never make me feel like this !
I am now in the belief that Chalamet, Zendaya, Butler, Pugh, and Taylor Joy are the 5 future major stars of Hollywood that will be huge and relevant for the next 20 or so years. I think the only other 2 people that can join that list are Jenna Ortega(who’s already on it) and Glen Powell(who I need to see a little more of Twisters may seal it for me). Maybe Tom Holland if he picks better projects and shows off his chops. But these current 5 are the future of young stars in Hollywood for the foreseeable future
14:33 I'm one of those book purists, so it's crazy to say this, but I think NOT ONLY did Denis only make good changes, I think those changes actually make the story as a whole better. For example, Chani being a counter-force to Paul just serves to drive home his differences after he drinks the water of life (he's totally on her side before, afterwards... he realizes he doesn't have a choice but to betray her and the fremen) she protests so much so it's really clear to everyone that this isn't a savior story, it's a story about a people being used by leaders, power, and religion. Denis really captured what Frank wanted to say.
Book purist here too. I agree with your assessment. There were always going to be changes from book to screen no matter what is being adapted. People are always surprised by this for some reason. The question is, do the changes work for what is presented without completely betraying the source material. With that said, Denis made changes that were pretty amazing overall and leaves even a Dune book nerd like myself wondering what’s next.
I’m so sad that I’m hearing people say Denis Villneuves “might be the best sci-fi director ever” when he is the best director working right now. Period. No genre. People are forgetting Sicario, Enemy, Prisoner and Incendies. He hasn’t missed once.
Yes to all of you said. DV did some very "out there" things to make this. 1.) Wanting it to "feel" alien, he actually invented new musical instruments. 2.) His throat singing was also a new kind. The dude he hired took Tibetan throat singing & expanded it to a new kind of throat singing. (First heard in the opening black screen Power is spice..." Have seen it 4 times, so far. (Am I developing a problem?). Will look for your expanded review of Dune II...
Did anyone notice the mirror/distortion of images between Paul's visions and reality? For example: the scene from his vision, from part one, where he slices up the imperial soldiers strikes a pose and his helmet comes off, It's Chani who does that in part two. Or the scene where he gives her a long gaze. I think they tried to make that shot mirror his first vision of Arakis (Chani looking at him).
Yes, that's because he see multiple possible futures, that aren't exactly set in stone. The movie does an awesome job at showing this with the mix matching of his visions and reality.
I don't normally watch this kind of RU-vid content but it's bringing me so much joy to see some grown men sitting around and sharing their enthusiasm for DUNE. Also love that one of you name-dropped Antonioni and art-house cinema. Wonderful!
Totally agree. I have Dune 2 right up there with Terminator 2 as the greatest sci-fi action films ever made. My only criticism is that they should have given awesome Butler more screen time. Feyd was such an awesome villain and I wish we saw more of him
Right Now that's only one of the very rare issues i can find about this movie... Just wanted a little bit more of screen time about him to build up more but i get it the movie was almost 3 hours long
Honestly, the Matrix gave me that vibe after the 1st one...then we know the wheels fell off. Then LOTR, now DUNE has taken the football and ran with it.
OPPENHEIMER, ‘ENDGAME, AVATAR:THE WAY OF WATER, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON and now DUNE 2. My weak bladder is always the one that suffers for these runtimes.
What I loved about this is that action does not take precedence over the narrative. Any other action film would have the last 45 minutes being just action, here though you get about 10 minutes of action ie battle scenes, then back to plot at a human scale with the throne room scene. Brilliant.
Dune 2 Is A Masterpiece!!! 10/10!!! My Out Of The Theater Brief Review. The Sound, The Cinematography, The Acting All Top Notch!!! If This Movie Was Released In Oct It Would Have Challenged Oppenheimer For Best Movie Of 2023. This Movie Best Godzilla Minus One And That Was My Favorite Movie Of 2023. The Movie Ending With Chanti's Face Broke My Heart!!!
These guys aren’t kidding movie is Amazing , and must be seen in imax or Dolby cinema . Even the sound was epic my reclining seats rumbled awesomely in the Dolby cinema
Watched this at the 3AM showing in AMC Lincoln square. Easily the best movie of the year. One of the best experiences in a theater since Endgame 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
It's an absolute shame and tragedy that Disney did not treat Star Wars like this. Star Wars ep.7, 8, and 9 where dumpster fires compared to the production of Dune, and I am a hardcore Star Wars fans.
The SW prequels were a dumpster fire compared to this… I don’t blame Disney at all for not comparing to this film. Film making is hard. SW forever became simplistic childish space opera the moment child Annakin jumped in the podracer… it was all downhill from there… with Rogue One and Andor being a rare high point.
saw dune 2 late last nite and i honestly had to sit in the theatre for like 20 mins after the credits rolled and contemplate what i just watched ( one of those times where something was so good i had to collect my thoughts ) im going to see it again friday with my friend
I wasnt a fan of this franchise. I watched part 1 on netflix and i find it cool and made me wanna see part 2. Then i watched part 2 in cinema yesterday. Here's what i can say. If you are hooked from the start and felt that u dont want the movie to end, then there's no doubt that the movie and the franchise just turned you into a fan! I cant wait for part 3. And yes, it is one of the best or perhaps the best sci fi movie i have ever seen. I wish today's star wars has this kind of writing and story telling.
But Star Wars never had this kind of depth unfortunately...otherwise the original movies and The Force Awakens were entertaining at the time they came out.
Watched it on 80ft imax laser dome screen with 9ft subwoofer & it was magnificent. The huge theater was shaking especially in those 9 scenes(yeah i have written them down 😂) with greatest bass I've ever experienced. & that's just bass. Everything else also was just dialed up to 11
As a life long original StarWars fan left with a lump in my throat and sadness walking out of The Last Jedi thinking I just watched the worse movie ever made was horrible. The joy I feel from these reviews as a similar fan of Dune is just euphoria. My expectations are high for sure but I am so excited for Thursday night and local release that I feel like a teenager all over again :-)
It is so refreshing to hear this review. So many others Are trying to find holes in it; places where it didn’t meet the book or reach all out perfection. The truth is that it is a near perfect movie. It is OK to say that!
Saw it last night in 70mm Imax - amazing. What was surprising/ not surprising was the number of people on their phones - playing games, texting, IG. Pay $25 to annoy everyone around you. Cool.
