Great reminder. I read the Dune cycle a long time ago, and I have only now found out how it still resonate within me. Thanks! Just one thing. The main character in the Dune are not Atreides, or Harkonen, or emperor. It is in fact, Duncan Idaho.

The Missionaria Protectiva is also, I think, what rescues Dune from the Mighty Whitey trope. Paul is a (European) outsider who, upon entry into Fremen (Arab) society, immediately becomes extraordinary. He becomes their leader, their best fighter, their prophet, and eventually, their god. Colonial hubris distilled down into literary stereotype. Except it's all a sham. The savior the Fremen look to to free them from colonial oppression exists only because of the manipulation of those colonial oppressors - and the results, the Jihad - there is no savior from that.

Isn't it a massive lost opportunity from Villaneuve to not make it a big deal that Paul was adjusting his stillsuit in a weird, distintive way so people realise something was weird before the woman even pointed it out? It would have driven the point home a lot more.

I've seen one other time a prophecy existed in fiction, written with every intention it come to pass, and while it had a mystical method of how it proceeded (because it was fantasy and magic was real - just it was rare to find TRUE magic)... seeing how each piece played out as they came to pass was a great deal of fun. "Three swords must come again." ... it's one prophecy in fiction which stick with me quite deeply because of how it's pulled off. (Dune's is not one, because I managed to let it pass as 'it's prophesy' into 'allowing the Bene Gesserit missionary work is really *dangerous* ...' - I had my parents point out it was more of a very-very long con.)

I always felt it was more symbiotic - how much are Paul and Jessica using this prophecy, and how much are they being used by it?

@@kereminde If it's "Memory Sorrow and Thorn," you're talking about, I loved how the realization immediately cuts to a POV switch to our hero grimly and heroically determined to do the thing which we know that they must at all costs NOT DO. . .

@@themocaw It is absolutely that trilogy, and I really love those books. There's a few choices I don't like in the way things flow, but it winds up tying together as a nice whole. ... have the next series waiting for me to have time to read it. "The Heart of What Was Lost" was rather nice as well.

Do yourself a favor, if you really enjoy the first read through. Read it again before moving onto the 2nd book. You get so much more out of it the second go around. At least I did!

It's a book that bears multiple readings extremely well. You do get more out of it each time. I think because 1) your focus is different, 2) it has a depth and complexity that provides a wealth of things to explore... which no one, I think, can absorb from one reading. There's just too much.

I've been reading this book since I was fourteen. I'm always learning something new.

The way I understand it is that you can have both struggle and strive in a society that is under horrible pressure. I think the real world is the perfect example: something called "money" was invented thousands of years ago, and now we live in a very competitive and ruthless society. Governments have been taken over by greedy people who don't care about the masses and just wanna gain money and power. The economy world-wide is trending downward since the 70s and the 1% hold more money than the bottom 90% combined. You also see members of society rot away every day from lack of resources. But even in this society, plenty of people thrive and technology keeps improving and enjoy may commodities in this life. So the Fremen could be struggling in a harsh desert, causing the loss of millions of people, but also members who succeed in the desert and have gained power and money from the spice.

I want a version of Dune where the narrator goes off on these really cool omniscient tangents about real-world and in-universe history and can't really be arsed to focus in on what's actually going on in the scene in question as it happens. "And that's that's the main reason why the Fremen believe that... oh yeah, so Paul actually did make it onto the back of the worm just now and that's going to be really important for him because..."

Its his love of the story. It is clearly something that had a huge impact on him, something that he loves and wants to introduce others to.

He speaks in the present tense. It makes everything feel more real and exciting. Like it's happening right now

Why would it be called the Kanly deck? Kanly is an official convention for declaring and resolving vendettas between (usually) Great Houses in accordance with The Great Convention. Therefore, Kanly bars the use of nuclear weapons and attempts to offer a way for blood-feuds to be resolved without (ideally) involving armies or innocent bystanders. The Fremen do not observe Kanly, obviously, and have their own traditions around fights to the death but Fremen duels don't implicate family necessarily. The use of "The Family Atomics" card would be explicitly barred by The Great Convention and thus could not be considered Kanly. Given how under-handed many of the treachery cards are, compared to the open and supposedly honourable conventions of Kanly, I think "Treachery" is (if not a perfect term for it) probably better and more accessible to newcomers than "Kanly".

Kanly is the "War of Assassins".. the sanctioned form of warfare between Great Houses which is intended to minimize collateral damage and incentive for commoners to revolt. If it's just nobles backstabbing each other, that tends to not affect Joe the Shoeseller. Smoking craters is another matter, and could incite rebellions that would require the Emperor to intervene, kill large swaths of the general populace, and destabilize the things that nobility holds dear (privilege, trade, power). This form of targeted warfare exists because it was recognized that squabbling between Great Houses could cause huge problems if it devolved into scorched earth. By limiting permissible actions to things like betrayals, assassinations, etc. the chaos caused is limited, trade goes on, and the Spice... The Spice must flow.
