Combined soundtracks on three different music modules. All three soundtracks were recorded on real hardware. AdLib and AdLib Gold on a downclocked Pentium II, and MT-32 through Dosbox with a real MT-32 attached. Here are some observations after having done this exercise:
- There are some skipped notes in the AdLib version, mostly in the "Sietch" song. This missing time made matching the songs together a bit more difficult.
- The same song doesn't necessarily have the same length depending on which soundcard you're listening it on. I don't know WHY this is. Hypothesis is that Stéphane Picq re-composed the songs specifically for each soundcard.
- I recorded the AdLib versions on the floppy version of Dune, while the MT-32 version used the CD version. Maybe that accounts for differences in soundtrack length?
After listening to this for a while, I find that this combined version brings out the strengths of each version, while doing a good job of hiding flaws. It's hard to return to the standard individual soundcard version of each afterwards.
Stéphane Picq has remastered SPICE OPERA in 2024. Give it a listen!
