I love how the handful of unprepared and under equipped fighters on the stairs still tore through the harks until they were flanked. Shows how well they were trained.
@@BrucknerMotet the Harkonnens were at the bottom of the stairs, the Sardaukar went down behind the Atreides after the Harkonnens baited them downstairs
@@BrucknerMotet I don’t think the movie kept that plot point… wish it did though, because it’s interesting that the Emperor himself would fear all his houses turning on him if he did so bold a move as to eradicate a potential rival openly. It goes with the running theme in Dune of mutually assured destruction…
Despite the Greek heritage of the house that ruled, Caladan is short for Caledonia (Scotland) The combat tactics are Scot and Greek as was Caladan. About to be combined with Freman Mujahadeen, The Horkonen and Sardukar are about to be severely outclassed and butchered. Along with tens of thousands of star systems. The Emperor and his empire are about to be dismembered.
My hat's off to whatever genius thought of making the body-shields go blue for a block/deflection and red during a killshot: It let the choreography of the knife/sword fights go as fast as possible, but the audience had a very clear, almost a Kurosawa death-pause level of understanding of who just got kilt, and who was still mobile. Such a simple little thing, but so important.
@@SaichiSugimoto77 if you watch the training with gurney in the first movie I’m pretty sure it goes red just when someone is moving slow enough to get through the shield, since no blood is drawn in the training session
1:13 I like how Denis Villeneuve even included the Old Duke's bullfighting. It shows the level of details he achieved and how much he loves the novels.
It's presumably one of the Household frigates. It would make sense that on Caladan, being masters of naval warfare, they'd hide their major assets underwater.
@@celebrim1 When I first saw it I thought to myself why the hell do they have them in the water. Then I realized it's actually a good way of hiding your ships from a visual scan, someone would need to be looking in the water or have special equipment for sensing ships under those conditions.
I remember when I was eight years old when I first saw Star Wars back in 1977 remember how I felt I’m getting the same vibe. p.s I am not Comparing the two movies I just like them both !!!
Dune the books have been here a long time. Wait until u see part 2. If you look on RU-vid for David lynch presentation. The film has the wheel 2 parts even though this is a small part of a big dune universe shown over many books first written by Frank Herbert' than continued by his son
This is badass, straight up. One thing the movie did a great job in conveying was that loyalty and comradery among the Atreides, so well that the viewer feels for the fallen House Atreides and curses the treacherous dogs that call themselves Harkonnen. Even more betrayal is felt seeing the Sardaukar also mercilessly on the hunt to eliminate this noble house of the Landsraad. To say again, this fan edit is straight up badass, and raises my Atreides energy upwards many fold. "Atreides! Atreides! Atreides! ... " ✌
“ The Atriedes forces are the finest in the imperium trained by Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck” Love how in that single line the battle prowess and formidability of the house is established how they are so faithful so well trained that the Harkonnens still need not 1 or 2 BUT 3 battalions of the Saurdarkaur When me and dad watched the film and the bagpipes started playing me and my dad literally looked at each and went “That’s fucking badass” Out of all the instruments that have survived time and out of all the new ones Atriedes chose one of the oldest and most used war instruments ever from Scotland and if you know Scotland’s history you know how legendary the Bagpipes actually are Hell even there planet of Caladan is like Scotland An island surrounded by water much green forest and fields with outcrops of rock faces and a sense of ancient history amongst the foundations of the architecture……
Duncan was a Swordmaster of Ginaz so sword mastery was almost a religion for them. It was with his instruction that House Atredes were able to train an army that rivaled the Sardaukar who were brutally trained to be killers. So when Paul started training the Fremen who lives in an environment that made them equally brutal, they surpassed even the Sardaukar in ability.
you'd think the Emperor in the Dune Universe would be scared of Baron Harkonnen, judging by how scary, powerful and wealthy and sneaky they are but he's actually jealous and scared of Atreides probably the reason for that is how reasonable, trust worthy and dependable House Atreides is and that makes them very popular among the other houses and therefore most of those houses would prefer Duke Leto to be the Emperor.
all if not most of the houses are just as sneaky even baron harkonen is afraid of the emperor. everyone is afraid of the emperor. baron and duke know they were on the chopping block. harkonen outnumbered the atreides but still needed the sardukar help. so harkonen are not that powerful?.
The Emperor saw in Atreides a powerful breed of charisma and competence that would allow the Duke to inevitably unseat his house on the throne should he harbor such ambitions. Other houses may be jealous, but none commanded the loyalty of so many high-quality assets as Atreides and would've eventually been brought to heel under Atreides if the time came. The Emperor did not understand that the Atreides charisma comes from the lack of political ambition combined with a strong desire to do the right thing. He can't trust that, it's not how he thinks. The Harkonnen, on the other hand, can be trusted to lie, deceive, cheat, and steal; after getting rid of Atreides they are a lot easier to manipulate and deal with.
@@leihtory7423 The Atreides army was nearly the equal of the Sardaukars (if not already at their level or above, because certain sections of the atreides army was even more elite than the rest), this is why the Harkonnen outnumbering them didn't matter that much
@@KalashVodka175 Atreides had the best trained troops among the Houses but still the Sardaukar were leagues ahead. Leto and his stuff hoped they could enlist Fremen and train with them to reach Sardaukar levels. He expected to be betrayed at some point but the attack came way sooner than he expected. In the book Atriedes make a small raid against the Harkonen and Tufir estimates that the Harkonen don't have the money to transport enough men to beat them until they are ready. Still the Harkonen get a loan and also Sardaukar join them, the latter being a force multiplier that Tufir didn't expect as it was illegal for the Emperor to interfere in war between Houses. Each Sardaukar is like 5-10 House soldiers so the invasion force was way stronger and arrived sooner than expected. The Harkonen additionally used artilery in the book, which is forbidden by the customs of war in Dune. As for money to transport such a large force, they Harkonen got in a huge debt to claim such a decisive victory. That's how the Emperor lured them. Now the Harkonen will try to export spice like crazy but they can't since they need a lot too, they don't have the equipment nor the support of the Fremen. This will turn the rest of the Houses against them. So, no Atriedes and the Harkonen in a bad situation, in need of imperial help. Just as the Emperor wants. But Paul will ruin these plans.
@@jackdonith In addition to all of that, internal betrayal and sabotage was needed to blind them and cripple them so the surprise attack at night would not get cut down.
This was Oscar Isaacs best role imo and he hardly had a role. His look, his presence, his delivery. He sticks in your mind and your imagination fills in his origins: his rise to power, his relationship with his bullfighter father, his courtship of Lady Jessica, his battles and glory... All hail, House Atreides!
As someone who read the book, and watched the old movie and the miniseries, this movie really blew me away, I couldn't believe that they pulled it off as well as they did. Great work capturing the essence of the galaxies noblest house
The more clips I see, the more I’m looking forward to seeing it again. The salute with the knife held horizontally at the forehead reflects the horns of the Atreides bull. So many brilliant details.
Funny you mention the knife move. That was a little piece of improv from Jason Mamoa as a nod to his son who does a philipino martial art form that uses that sign. It stuck as a cool sign so they kept it going.
@@the_zest3849 a lot of the combat is based on that martial art! It's called Eskrima. Momoa was really pleased when he found out that was being used. The salute is also sort of referenced in the book where a couple of characters "put the blade of the rapier to their foreheads in the ancient style". I think Herbert probably thought of the sword held vertically like a fencing salute, but I much prefer the version Villeneuve uses
@@the_zest3849 Yes, based Kali. Used by the guerrillas warriors of my nation against the Imperial Japanese. That combat style was meant to be very secret, strictly was not meant to reach foreign knowledge however it was thought otherwise because it would have died soon and the wisdom about it would be lost. Anyways it makes sense in the Dune universe; Kali is meant to for a quick lethal takedown.
@@alconvin2334 well farad corrino in the book children of dune said that the way the atreides administrate their world and inspire loyalty is admirable. So Atreides did deserve their reputation.
@@Svenne-man-1880 bro, regardless of the political system the Atreides are part of. When your leader is loyal to you, the least that you can do is to be loyal to him. Monarchy, imperialism or democracy, there will always be leaders chosen or not. We all need a leader like leto, noble, fair and a man of his word.
When watching the landing on Arrakis scene in the movie theater, I just remember the sheer power of the music, the sounds literally vibrating through my body, giving me goose bumps and pushing me into my seat, rendering my ADHD nonexistent. When Villeneuve said this film was made for the IMAX experience, it was far from pretentious.
"Dogs, do you want to live forever" is what Wallenstein said when he sent his soldiers to their certain death during the Thirty Year War. Very motivational.
Anyone here watch the Expanse Finale? Some of the Soldiers names on the display during the ground battle : D. Idaho G. Halleck J. Rico W. Antilles E. Ripley. It was awesome
The triumphant second half of Zimmer's House Atreides anthem (which follows the piece you've used) will be sensational with highlights of Dune part 2. Great work, but I know the best is yet to come.
At 3:10 Paul asks, “Do you yield?!” as a fireball puffs up. Like Jamis, the Harkonnen are playing for keeps. Paul has to go beyond play fighting, and embrace the real thing.
I honestly never thought about it with relation to the harkonnens but that is completely true. The Atreides were treating taking Arrakis like a formal gesture, just like a formal duel. The Harkonnens and the Fremen both play to survive.
“We are house Atreides! There is no call we do not answer! There is no faith that we betray!! The emperor has asked us to bring peace to Arrakis! House Atreides accepts!!!” - Duke Leto Atreides! EPIC!!!
@@leestewart72 His popularity was growing and many Houses around the Emperor's circle were beginning to support Duke Leto and also plotting for him to be the next Emperor due to his kind yet fierce nature of protecting his family, his soldiers, his friends and his People. Not to mention Leto's soldiers were getting to the point of being on par with the Emperor's soldier elites Sardaukar. And this was before they were sent to Arrakis. The Emperor was plotting for the Downfall of House Atreides for a long time now.
@@CEBph5997, I can't remember where I heard this but many of those Great Houses friendly to the Atreides learned of the secret plot to destroy them and tried to warn them but they got cockblocked by the Emperor & the Spacing Guild some even got a not so nice bitch slap visit by the Sardukar aka a small percentage of their citizens getting slaughtered as a reminder of who's in charge.
ATREIDES! ATREIDES! ATREIDES! It's a shame their fight scene were so few and short. I would really love to see more of their fight scene on the stairs (when Sardaukar ambushed from behind) and fight scene led by Gurney while their spaceships were destroyed by Harkonnen
From what ive researched part 2 is going to be very action oriented. I havent felt excitment for a film series in so long. Im going to read the book soon.
Not a shame at all. Dune screentime must not be wasted in useless action scenes. Show only what's necessary to convey meaning and emotion, be it action or drama.
I only wished we could have seen the Atreides boys in their full armour take on the Harkonnens in a fair fight - would've been glorious to see them at their peak
The knife salute featured in Dune by Paul Atreides is really from the Filipino Martial Arts or Kali in general layman's terms! So House Atreides are Masters of Kali! Awesome!
The cuts at 1:50 , 2:29 and beyond are so fucking godlike, real chills Absolute props w/ the edits! such a great tribute to a house that fuckin' exudes nobility and loyalty
@@ddemyanek the trick with that one is that it actually a double take. Slow it down and you'll see that Paul doesn't start off raising his blade where duncan ended, he repeats a lot of the motion to make it appear smoother and less like a cut.
Oscar Isaac nailed Leto. That line with Paul just makes me rewind it over and over. And then Gurney. Love what you did with this. Props to you! ATREIDES!
I really love the move the Atreides do with the blade before a fight. Nothing fancy, no flamboyant words or shouts, no dramatic posing or jumping around. Just bring the blade upon your heart and upon your head. It also works perfectly combined with "may thy knife chip and shatter"
Absolutely fricking loved this mate! This is even better than the official trailer for the movie, in my opinion, it really captures the greatness of Dennis' Dune adaptation.
Since "progress" and materialism have killed them in our actual society, at least the virtues of Bravery, Honor, Nobility, Duty, and Sacrifice live on in our stories.
Nobility is not a virtue, it is a heritage. Ask the Bourbons and the Romanovs and the Qings. Sacrifice is not a virtue either, it is at best a necessity, otherwise pointless or even harmful. Duty is not a virtue either. It is a requirement, and almost always an imposed one. Honour is not exactly a virtue, it is rather a duty of nobility. It has killed thousands and not saved a single one. Which leaves bravery. That may be a virtue, but it is usually indistinguishable from suicidal recklessness. Dune takes place on the far future, at a time when feudalism (and all the violent oppression that implies) has made a huge comeback. Money is just barely a factor in the economy, it is all about military strength, and the imperial Sardaukar are the most fanatical soldiers of them all, and the most feared, securing the supremacy of Corrino. Except that Atreides is proving to surpass even the emperor in pure military strength, which is why house Atreides is wiped out in a betrayal. However, the Fremen of Arrakis are far, far more fanatical once their messiah appears, and in their conquest kill more people than anyone in history. Paul Atreides compares himself to Hitler when he notices that he has long surpassed him in every way. And then his own son and heir calls him a coward. But it is all very impressive, isn't it? Don't you just want to give your life for his cause? Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, said that once people are ready to die for someone like they were for Hitler, their cause will persist throughout history. And that is *not a good thing!* That was the point of the books.
@@davidwuhrer6704 I don't usually reply to responses on my comments, but since you put so much time into responding and were polite about it... Don't worry, I'm aware of what Herbert was trying to convey through Dune. I was just voicing a thought inspired purely by the musical score, though I suppose I didn't clarify that. But I will agree with you that people throughout history ALWAYS distort ideals, leaving devastation in their wake. That cycle is something Dune captures very well, and it's why I don't place my faith in humanity. As to what I named as virtues, it seems we have rather differing definitions/worldviews concerning these words. Anyway, um, I hope this finds you well. This is a RU-vid comment section, so I can only thank you for not being rude.
@@ForseePilot If idealism always leads to devastation, maybe it's idealism that's the problem. Be that as it may, thank you for your consideration and for being polite. We both enjoy Dune, so our differences should not stand between us.
I was so hyped and proud of Gurney and the Atreides soldiers, the way Gurney saw the Heighliner and all the ships arriving, knew they were vastly outnumbered but still ran into battle "with me!"💪🏽⚔🤺
I just finished reading the book today, and I must say I find this eerily moving. This is a great and stirring tribute to House Atreides. Excellent job, and thank you for sharing it.
This is magnificent. I am a Dune acolyte..from way back...read every book several times (except for two..I think) You nailed the majesty of the Atreides House. Are you in film school?? Consider it. Saw the original David Lych movie...missed the mini series in 2000 though. ..going for my third viewing of the current film....your work here..is Epic.. thank you.
Thankyou so much! I'm a huge dune buff myself, read them when i was in 6th grade onward. The love for dune out here is so wonderful. I'm sure you know we've been waiting for our moment in the spotlight for a loooooong time
@@the_zest3849 For thousands of years preparations have taken place...waiting for the one. The ultimate DUNE video editor. We do have other options if you fail to fulfill your promise. ;)
I love the casting of Thufir Hawat, the mentat Master of Assassins looks like a man who in his youth could knife you, poison you, twist your neck or crush you, look at those shoulders. Now in his later years he acts as tactician and security officer. Too bad both movie versions of Dune ignore the role Thufir played in the battle of Arrakeen, he was so good at killing even the Fremen complimented his skills.
Now, THIS is more like it!!! the more I watch this, the more intense it gets!!! makes you want to be on that Atreides battle line... gets the blood flowing, the chills, and the rush from knowing you are part of something BIGGER than life!!! oooh, I got carried away there, yeah? anyway, well done sir, well done!!!
There's one scene from the book I'd love to have seen in the film, when Jessica, Paul and Duncan are in the desert and Duncan offers Paul his shield, Paul replies, "Keep your shield, Duncan. Your right arm is shield enough for me."
House Atreides of Caladan. Greatest Blood Descendants of ancient Scotland and their greatest warrior Celts, and the Greece's Bravest warriors. ATREIDES!! ATREIDES!! ATREIDES!!
I feel like that’s part of the point. We’re so indoctrinated by the cause of the Atreides that we don’t fully see the oncoming tragedy of Paul’s ascent until it is too late
I don't think 60 Billion lives is half of the universe though... It's more like, a penny of the universe. Still fucking bad though. Can't wait for people's reaction when he does that lmao m
I was 17 when i read the first novel and within 2 years i read all. I was absolutly in rage against Vladimir Harkonnen and the Emperor!!!! Duke Leto knew everything what was coming and he accepted his fate for the greater good. For me he was the true hero in the novel for sure beside Duncan Idaho.. loyal to house Atreides with every cell in his body. Dune was, at least for me, all about justice for the good. House Atreides would have brought peace but they tried to vanish this threat as long as possible. Long live house Atreides
Sounds like avatar but tbh the entire film was perfect, every single piece of music was articulated and wrote to perfection. To make a film that doesn’t disappoint fans of the books is quite difficult. This film was just gob smacking.
Thankyou so much! Yeah I actually left it in half because I had one hour in between class to make this whole thing and second I kinda like how all the scenes happen at once but totally get the criticism

@@Deepingmind Yeah, I was so happy to see Duncan get his big fight. His death in both Lynch's version and the miniseries were terrible. These versions of Gurney and Duncan really make you believe that they are two of the most skilled fighters in the galaxy. Enough that they are known by name among the Harkonnen
watching this movie I realized what family were the Starks of Winterfell inspired by Ned Stark is Duke Leto and Bran Stark & Jon Snow are inspired by Paul Atreides I mean I'm not completely sure but I think it's pretty likely specially since George RR Martin has very likely been reading Dune growing up since it was and still is a top 5 Sci-Fi story a very large story with lots of World Building and Lore attached to it just like GRRM's 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.
I think Martin doesn't make a secret of Dune being one of the inspirations if i remember correctly. But there are also plenty historical novels that capture aspects of that. I have an oldef french one sbout the French royal family during the 100 years war, if i remember correctly that is. Don't know the english title. Maurice Druon -Les Roys Maudit. Hard recommend if you crave that GoT thing.
the scene of those burial monuments on Caladan reminded me of that scene in GOT where Ned Stark lingers amid various rock formations (with runes etched into them) in the leadup to dealing with the deserter.
