The line heads north-west-ish through a small town called Lydd. It then turns a bit more northerly and joins up with a single line branch line from Hastings just before a small place called Appledore (where it then becomes double track.) This branch line then continues on to join the main line at Ashford (Kent) after which the nuclear waste can be sent to any one of numerous places on its journey further north.
My father used to drive the nuclear waste train from Bradwell Power Station in Essex. Ironically the waste flask wagon was left overnight in a completely unguarded and open temple mills (Stratford) siding.
You fellas do like to over react don't ya XD The rails are rusted because it's not used all the time like a mainline. Police won't bother you unless you climbing on the crane XD
Having spent thirty years fishing at least once a week literally yards from the power station you two seem to be suffering from some sort of paranoia. There are no armed guards, no great secrecy, no-one watching your every move. It's just another power station with obviously some sensitive areas.
although this seems likely since the whole surrounding area is a National Nature Reserve, the very fenced-off region where they read that sign is in fact not NNR land (according to DEFRA maps; it excludes the whole length of those tracks specifically) so that sign applies only outside of the fence where they're standing, inside the fence is not protected by any laws i recognise at least
Can't tour Dunge A but you can tour dunge B.. Went earlier this year and was very dissapointing. Not allowed inside any interesting buildings due to maintenance but went in the duplicated control room where training was taking place. Interesting to see the various procedures.. All the control panels look very dated and are original for consistency but the systems running behind them are updated periodically..The guy said up until around 3 years ago one of the computer systems was the oldest of its kind running such an installation in europe...Scary folks... Did a tour a few years previously and saw far more including looking into the reactor hall and the cooling ponds. There was a truck their being loaded up with its flask.. Later in the day say the same flask on the back of a wagon in that rail compound coupled up to 2 loco's (for failsafe purposes) ready for sellafield.. Got pics of that folk's if interested..
This is the fuel loading area opposite Power Station Access Road (Dungeness Road), operated by Direct Rail Services from what the signage says. The line joins the main network near Appledore station.
There is a Video on RU-vid of BNF & BR testing a Nuclear Flask they laid a Flask Wagon on it's side with the Box over the Flask and then ran a Self Propelled former Mainline Diesel Locomotive and 3 Coaches behind it it got up to between 90 & 100mph the Self Propelled Train Smashed into the Flask and Nothing but scratches and minor damage to the Flask was done and that was it! The Locomotive and Coaches were a complete write off luckily BR had taken them from Condemned Stock! Also the line Joins the Main Network at Appledore on the Ashford - Hastings Line
I look forward to your weekly installments, and this is no exception. It's like I'm actually there at the time of filming, feel like part of the gang on all the explores :)
The flasks of nuclear waste from Sizewell atomic power station, used to be carried on the section of railway that went right next to my primary school - the playground ended in a ten foot high chainlink fence, and the railway ran (it's still used) in a cutting beyond that. If a train went by at break, then there would be dozens of small kids gawping through the fence. Trains full of military gear, and nuclear flasks were the ones you always hoped to see.
Sellafield in Cumbria, also of interest the Wagon with the Flask over turned across the Railway Line was at the Old Dalby Test Track in Leicestershire in the Early 80s it was a Class 46 Diesel Electric Locomotive Numbered 46009 which had 3 Mark one Coaches behind it and was travelling at 100mph when it struck the overturned wagon and Flask, the Flask is still in existence and I believe it is at the National Railway Museum in York the Locomotive and Coaches were completely written off in the crash and all that happened to the Flask was a Few Scratches in comparison to the rest of it! But hardly any of the coloured liquid from inside the Flask escaped and the test was deemed a success! Those type of Flasks are still in everyday use with Direct Rail Services along with some newer type wagons to convey the flasks from Nuclear Power Station or pick up point to the Nuclear Reprocessing Centre at Sellafield
Good video 👍 was good to watch. A very similar setup at sizewell in Suffolk, with the crane and track. I used to watch the train almost weekly the track ran past my flat.
The line already existed as a branch to New Romney when the power station was built, and this was the closest point (to Dungeness A.) So it was much easier and cheaper to bolt on an existing secure compound to the existing line, rather than to lay new track all the way to Dungeness A. (FWIW, a spur indeed used to come off this line to Dungeness, but that was lifted many decades prior.)
It's obvious that those railroad tracks haven't been used in quite awhile hence all the rust on the upper surface of the rails. Cool vid though and it is a very sensitive area to the authorities no doubt. Cheers!
i remember the tv series 'edge of darkness' was based loosely on a story about nuclear fuel being transported through urban populations and a murder, and the superb spooky music by eric clapton! 😎🎼🇬🇧
Don't worry Martin, these guys have got loads of things wrong in the past, especially when exploring military establishments. Before you guys go off on one at me, I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to military places. Stellafield LMAO you can't even get the bloody name right.
just to make a point nuclear power plants are not about making power it's about that sweet sweet Uranium-235 and Plutonium-239 to make bombs as for were the nuclear waste goes it comes up north very close to were I live called Capenhurst u google maps that look at how much nuclear waste I live next to
Hi IKS Team are you dedicated to only historic abandoned buildings etc or would you ever consider the possibility of exploring abandoned prisons and such too?
those armed cops are often in the chip shop down the road i seen them many times, one time they arrived disguised as taxi drivers but still had their weapons lol
Hi GuysYou missed another nearby site the landing of the PLUTO pipeline from the second world war. The concrete you were standing on was part of the shore installation bulldozed into the lake when the site was demolished. Your car was parked by the entrance to the site of the pump area. Most of the site was removed after the war, but there are still bits and pieces if you know where to look. The railway is the truncated remains of the New Romney branch. The waste trains run about twice a week but at irregular times to stop terrorists I suppose. There are Nuclear police around the area and they are armed with machine guns and you do not want to mess with them, also there are border force people looking for illegals, if you are old like me they leave you alone, but they would suspect you either as smugglers or a migrants off a boat. you were lucky. Good video, will catch your next one.
I understand your paranoia but honestly from being in the other side of this situation you have to understand it is their job to watch you even though it becomes apparently clear your just looking around but hey it's your job to get close to the fence to document the history and its their job to watch anyone approaching the fence. They don't want to just park one car that's obviously watching you and following you around your allowed to be there no need to make you uncomfortable so even though you perceive it as a bunch of people building up really there just creating a cycle so someone is always right around there just in case. If they really wanted you they wouldn't pull you over right after you left #1 we all know your filming #2 your mini is not the least bit hidden and we probably already checked it out and have names addresses ect not a big deal just keeping track incase you show up again and check out the gates then come again at shift changes so on and so forth. Basic rule of thumb if their good at their job you would be being watched and never know they let you know you were being watched probably why you didn't start poking around at the train tracks when you thought about it look how much further you were from the fence after they made a presence known lol. There's a method to the madness lol. Were having a laugh. Look at em bookin it to the car lol bloody Soviets.
