I like your point about the capacity for them to have a Good alignment. Now I wanna find a good place to use the phrase: "Get out of here with your mammal morality!" or something like it.
@Morberis

Child raising comes to mind. If they weren't fire newts, being blaise about fungus because of susceptibility due to low body temperature. Maybe fire newts would be MORE susceptible since they're used to high temperature biomes. Other things about the relationship between metabolism and temperature. Or a dislike for accepting the cold or a dislike for just adding more layers being unacceptable. Finding sweating to be disgusting for multiple reasons. Sand/dust baths for cleaning. Other things related to hygiene. Listening to the video for more ideas, I'll add them below. A love of old sulphurous eggs like an odorous version of the Chinese century egg. Or a love of really odorous food, maybe their tongue also smells like a snake does. Or maybe that means they prefer much milder smells since it could overcome their smell receptors. Could be up to personal preference. Hunting with wildfires. Acceptance of eating sentient races you dislike. Maybe even good aligned newts don't care for the lives of sentient species. No right to life etc. An example for a law aligned character or NPC might not blink twice about killing criminals especially if there are good reasons to do so like it being safer than trying to capture them possibly because of reinforcements that are on the way.

Reptiles do bond like every other animal. But it certainly isn't mammal style bonding. So while I wouldn't see them as emotionally cold I do think they would be, at best, confused at how touchy feely mammals are. And contemptuous may be the actual norm.

One cannot talk of Firenewts without bringing up Fire Striders. The ultimate npc encounter would be a squad of 4-5 Elite Firenewt Windriders riding well armored Fire Striders. All armed with flaming weaponry and well trained in phalanx tactics. Equally comfortable making ride by attacks with devastating lance attacks, or dismounting to join their Striders in close combat.

You might have to correct yourself, birds are a subclass of reptile. They have scales, even if just on their feet/legs and a single hole for waste called a cloaqa. Also, for anyone that so very much wants to live beside dinosaurs, we do. They all have feathers.

It's all a human construct anyway. Arbitrary definitions meant to constrain things to make them easier to communicate and understand. And there are species that don't easily fit within those constraints because for some reason they evolved traits that this other branch has and they're missing some of the necessary traits to fit within their branch. But they most definitely aren't more closely related to that other branch. TLDR the terms are close enough to do their job, why bother arguing about something arbitrary and fictional. It's not making things more exact or precise.

@@AJPickett Some people see the grey area as a uniting thing and not a divergence, like people who insist that the platypus is a mammal that lays eggs... despite it being a marsupial and marsupials have diverged from mammals over 150 million years ago. How would a Fire Newt player character find a way to interact with the 'civilized' races? Just wear a big robe, or of they have the money/ability use an illusion? How would that effect them psychologically? Do they need much interaction? Would they even take that risk if they had other options?

I think this video touches on an issue that I've seen a lot in D&D: making things designed to be hostile (i.e. undead, most evil humanoids, etc.) into much more moral and socially acceptable. Someone I used to play with designed a world where societies use undead and necromancy in general without any moral or ethical concerns as an example. The point of all these inherently evil beings is to show different psychology and different values in non-humans, some of which trend towards evil or alien attitudes. It kind of irks me when these differences are minimized, making all humanoids into "basically human with only cosmetic differences."
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 2 года назад
exactly.
@monsieurdorgat6864
@monsieurdorgat6864 2 года назад
DnD was already full of "Basically human with only cosmetic differences". Absolutely decades of "just make a monster for the book I don't care how or why it's evil!" bad writing. Most of the time these "evil or alien attitudes" are you willingly paying for some nerd to tell you "they're just evil okay!?", which I could do for free and at a moment's notice. Explaining WHY things are evil is a fascinating addition to DnD games. People have been re-defining their morality for all of our history - so you probably shouldn't be so dismissive of someone exploring what it actually might mean to be undead. It's also a great way to chase bigots out of their holes - because bigots LOVE to assume things are biologically evil based on some medieval moral standards. Coming up with a complex and reasonable ideology for why intelligent creatures do bad things requires some serious thought - and people who do think that much won't end up as bigots (or as they try to rebrand themselves: "race realists")
@dans9097
@dans9097 2 года назад
@@monsieurdorgat6864 Granted, "biologically evil" can have a wide range of options when it comes to a world with magic and deities who actively screw around with mortal affairs, but damn if "they're evil because we need something to fight" isn't the sort of boring thing you could whip up on the fly. Like you'd said, you're paying someone to write up villains for you, unless you're up against Dick Dastardly, Gargamel, or a Captain Planet villain, I'd hope you'd want more for your money. Edit: Apologies, Monsieur, fairly sure I've replied to you on the same sort of topic across a couple comments. I'm bad for not checking usernames.

Firenewts have been one of my favourite races and cultures in dnd for a while. Iv had plans for a firenewt charecter iv wanted to play for a while but haven’t gotten a chance - a firenewt temple guard of a human church of kossuth One interesting thing about the fire newts at the human kossuth temples from Serpent Kingdoms is that it is stated that the “typical temple of kossuth is protected by more than one hundred fire-newts and roughly half that number of giant striders” (pg 37) a much larger number than i had thought than when i first read the book but yee Love the vid

here's a small change i'd add to the firenewt to give them something unique and an interesting edge: their spit fire ability ignores resistance to fire granted by being submerged in water. only that type of resistance, not fire resistance in general. they are semi aquatic beings who start their life in water (pretty sure they'd be amphibians, not lizards, though their brains probably are largely similar (damn now i need to look up at some point how similar mammal and bird brains are)), it makes sense that their fire spit functions under water, which would make an underwater encounter with them more scary as they are actually able to use all their actions, while being largely as restricted as the players (no swim speed but amphibious) making it an interesting challange.

I enjoyed the time you took to talk about mounted combat with this race. When I have played it has not used much mounted combat other than the typical paladin/cavalier. The Underdark supplements as well as as the Dark Sun setting put forth good images in ones minds eye for various mounts used by other races and or that are commonly used for commerce and warfare, I think. A non D&D related subject is Robert Adams and his Horse Clans novels. GURPS had a supplement for this world setting, but think it would be good for a Rifts dimension as well. PS my Halfling Paladin with a Giant Space Hamster for his stead would be lunch to these Firenewts lol

Considering pseudo-elemental creatures are being discussed, would you mind doing more creatures like this? Other denizens of related to the elemental planes. Like the Arrowhawks for example, I'm very interested in your take on the ecology of this creature. From what I've gleamed their biology is very adapted to the natural laws of the elemental plane of air and elemental chaos. They are mentioned to be scavengers but scavengers of what? Apparently they are also sentient enough to speak Auran? Is their ability to shoot out lightning related to the elemental chaos in some way? I'd love to hear you talk more about denizens of the elemental planes. 😀

A ridiculous Shar-powered transformation that doesn't have a record before Ibrandul was subsumed. Really wierd. Buuuut it led me to researching the Red Lizards due to their potential presence in the High Moor (can't find these "fire marshes" I've heard tale of) and that was a fascinating bit of old research. Then I finally click on this video the next day, and *fire lizards*. Good thing, too. I would have thought they were large or medium mounts. *Red Lizards are masseeve.* Ibrandalin even moreso- but I have no idea how to rationalize their existence besides shrugging and muttering about the cycle of night.

Well, depends on the kind of phoenix, if it is an elemental, they just accept that elementals are a part of their environment, you stay out of their way, or if you can, harness their power for warfare. As for the flame linnorm, those would certainly eat firenewts, so, they would gather in numbers and take them out, just as humans deal with major threats on the surface world. Smart linnorms might play the firenewt factions off against each other, playing chess to amuse themselves.

And since more and more of us creatives that play want the game to reflect our more egalitarian sensibilities, this tendency is exaggerated. A shame, I think, because it not only does the opposite of its intention (since it works to exclude a viewpoint on the world, rather than discuss possibilities through individual table gameplay), but also because it (like you pointed out) fails to see that these are creatures alien to us. They are not all going to be pacifists from stellaris or star trek. They are nuanced creatures who can be inclined to actions we might see as good to us or not, but it’s possible a lot of those actions would be bad, if mirrored in our society. Hence why we label them evil. I do think wizards could do better wording their creature descriptions to take this or another more pragmatic look into account, instead of an idealistic one, but meh. The main thing is that a society does not need to function like ours (or how you might believe it functions) to function in its own right. That should be pretty self explanatory, particularly in a game where the goal-by majority of the rules and contexts as written-is to, if not fight, then engage in contests of various kinds with a monster populated and essentially alien world.

Nice to know that even Fire Newts got fleshed out aside from "this is a monster that gets encountered in really hot environments or serving some flame religion". They actually got interesting... no longer being just heat-based combat pieces that only seem to appear in combat encounters.

Lizard mentality is well and good, but In oder to have a soffisticated society that makes use of disciplined warfare you need certain social characteristics. Stuff like, problem solving capability without violence, teamwork, the ability to think beyond one self, mutual trust ... Stuff like "they would rather eat each other then eat farm animals" breaks that. Winning strategies are those that survive rough times and not those that only work with abundance of resources.

Well this is a world where gods can uplift and aid society. It's totally possible to have a hierarchy based on domination with a deity proping up their society from collapsing.

There are plenty of examples of cultures/political groups working together and having infighting. Before ghengis khan came around, the mongols fought amongst each other just as much as they raided others.

Well it seems they actually have that as they are able to work together to make weapons and fight along side each other without turning. They just have “less” of it than the non reptilian minded do. Having an inherent desire for violence don’t make cooperation impossible, just harder. It works best when the species has a common enemy to constantly fight against, but if that enemy is ever defeated then they end up splintering off and fighting each other. It could be perhaps that these guys were up against some crazy strong enemies, and it was their ability to constantly wage war that helped them survive, but then after the enemy was gone their instincts didn’t go away and they ended up turning on each other to fill that void.

Your cold blooded lizardmen and the like must be rather bland then. They are supposed to be almost alien in how they think. It's like playing a dragon exactly like a human lord. It's close, but not close enough.

When you mean "biologically evil" not entirely sure what you're getting at. What's the natural advantage of torturing things and killing each other? If the argument is that these creatures are biologically antipathic to most other creatures, then what's the biological advantage of a sentient creature culling its own kind? They don't seem to reproduce at the same rate as bugs or plants to where that strategy would have any evolutionary advantage.

Often in D&D, it's the work of a god or other sort of higher power (sometimes a wizard did it). It may only be viable because of some blessing/intent of the Power, or even outright harmful to the species. Orcs weren't made to be the most biologically fit, for example, they're meant to enslave, breed with, and eat other sapients (particularly elves) and outstrip the carrying capacity of any place they find themselves, forcing them to move on and continue the cycle. An evil god (with a serious grudge against Corellon Lorethian, elven greater deity) created them to spite the world and the races/gods that claimed the nice parts before Gruumsh got to call dibs for his people.

Heh, ok, to narrow it down to one example, human technology advances the most rapidly when we are at war with each other. There is no actual division between biology and our social behavior. If your argument for biology predicates on removing a human from its natural environment, thus removing all influence of other humans on its learning and behavior, its not a complete human any more, it is half of what makes a human. Our informational heritage, our society, our learned behavior, IS part of our biology. You can't take an ant out of the hive and call it a complete ant.
@monsieurdorgat6864
@monsieurdorgat6864 2 года назад
@@AJPickett Technology doesn't actually advance more rapidy during war - only weapons and war technology advances more rapidly during war. Civilian-centered tech usually lags during war. The tech advances are a direct result of consolidated funding and effort. Most of us don't really benefit from that, though. Quite the opposite, even! I'm also not sure I understand what you're saying with your bit about our "natural" (what would that even be?) environment being part of our physiology. Are you saying that our brain is a physical object, thus our means of learning is best understood via biology? I don't think you can equate humans to ants - we're incredibly different organisms (e.g., we're not half-blind and rely completely on pheromones to tell us what to do and where to go) I can respond to that point once I better understand what you mean.

@@monsieurdorgat6864 I don't think this conversation is going to be productive because you keep spitting out statements that are factually incorrect and easily disproved, for example, microwave ovens, night vision cameras, medical technology, aeronautics, food preservation, etc. You dismiss my point with no basis in reality, no consensus in the conversation is possible because, apparently, you live in another universe.
