The cat race is called Tabaxi in the game. Also the speak with dead is funny gag, but in the actual game the spell only lasts 10 minutes after which the corpse goes back to being dead even if you didn't ask all 5 questions.

I'm sure others can explain these in more detail but: - The colorful group of adventurers that made it to the center of the maze during the Highsun Games is a direct reference to the cast of the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. (Paramount even released a short trailer highlighting this connection.) - Some players attest that the "Speak with Dead" gag has _actually happened_ in their campaigns, depending (of course) on the tone of the campaign, the players, and the DM. - There are a number of shapeshifting _spells,_ but Druids turning themselves into animals (aka. "wild shape") is a signature ability of their _class._ - "Disjunction" is a spell that can dispel/neutralize other spells and/or enchantments. - Themberchaud is canon. Allegedly, he was created when Gary Gygax was running a campaign and his cat leapt up onto the table they were playing on. - The catlike arena monster is a "Displacer Beast". Their signature ability is to create an illusion of themselves somewhere nearby, to distract prey/opponents from their true self.

My favorite joke in the movie is when the party faces the intelligence devourers. The party is a paladin, a druid, a sorcerer, a bard, and a barbarian. Paladins, Druids, Sorcerers, and Bards all use the Charisma skill, and barbarians use the Strength skill; it means that all of them don't need to use much Intelligence.

The cat people in D&D are called Tabaxi, at least on this "world", which is Faerun. D&D the game has other settings and other worlds. On Theros, there are other cat people who are based on lions, and called leonin, and on Eberron, there are "shifters" who can change from regular people into cat-like people. Changing into animal forms is a druid thing, not a tiefling thing. The items "Helm of Disjunction" and "Hither-thither staff" are unique to the movie, although stats for them have been released for game play.

I love this film. As a lifelong D&Der, it utterly captures the spirit of games - all the mad lateral thinking, and occasional 'fudging' by the dungeon master to give players what they need to continue. It also kinda takes the Marvel movie formula and makes it SO much tighter.

My friend and I just finished a DnD campaign it was just a small one since most of us were new to DnD and only two of us knew what they were doing. It took us, Two and a half months He's now planning a much longer campaign. It was pretty fun.
