These old-school diminutive pests are a fun threat to throw at adventurers in your 5E dungeons and dragons roleplaying games, the Mites were originally invented by Ian Livingstone, according to the lore they are said to be distantly related to Gremlins, and like their Snyad cousins, they have no supernatural powers. Jermlaine are even smaller, but a lot more vicious and cunning, though similar, they are not related.

I have even used all these creatures in my high-level campaigns. Because of most of their gear, natural animals instinctively avoided them. But I used these creatures to menace a high-level party at camp like a real-world camper is harassed by bugs and in the Underdark, they are the Underdark internet and spy network of its denizens on top of the magic.

I loved those books. man I would check them out of the library, for you kids out there that was a sort of warehouse of paper books that let you borrow them, and try to get every outcome before I took it back.

Same. I own the the 4th sorcery book, last in that series. I have the others on my list of books to get. There is also another brand of choose your own adventure books. Can't remember what they are called but two titles were green blood and down among the dead men. Very good. If you are a fantasy nerd (like me) definitely read them.

The Mites sound a little bit like the Rieklings from Elder Scrolls, and I'd probably bust out laughing if I managed to catch a Snyad, I imagine they'd sound like a rabbit screeching

Hey AJ. Thanks so much for this video. When I started d&d back in highschool (ad&d) with my used and falling apart core books.... It wasn't the dragon, dwarf or elf that got me... It was the Jermlaine. I have no idea why, but those little ugly dudes are near and dear. Big thumbs up.

i remember Jermlaine from second edition! Always loved me some little critters, a decent movie that had similar(yet more malevolent) creatures in recent years is "don't be afraid of the dark". The movie is not a masterpiece, but shows like an organised horde of little creatures can terrorize unprepared humans. Could be a good low-level oneshot adventure : one of the players inherits an ancient, dilapidated but still impressive mansion. Every previous owner has misteriously disappeared.. SPOILERS for a movie from 2010: the mansion stands on a passage to the underworld kingdom of these little creatures, the passage was closed but one of the previous owners opened it thinking there was some treasure. The creatures only attack during the night, targeting the weakest member of the household first( in the movie it's a little girl). First they steal little objects, food and occasional clothing. Then they pretend to be pixies/fairies to attract the most gulliable of the party members to the tunnel, always staying hidden..the moment he gets near enough, they grab them and bring it with him to their lair, never to be seen again..(of course in an rpg the character would have a chance to fight back or escape)

I grew up reading the Fighting Fantasy books. I had a local bookstore where I would scour looking for a new one I had not read. They were amazing. I had even read all of the Sorcery series too. That was pretty epic. Also I found AD&D later in life and really enjoyed playing that. It had so many options. We had one adventure where I played an Ogre Magi and was multi-classed in Theif/mage/fighter. That was a grind as I only got to put 1/6 of my xp into the classes. Still it was a fave character I played

I have read that Jermlaine shave their victims for different reasons. It's up to the DM if any, all or none of these could be true. They are... 1) hairlessness is a sign of weakness. Elder Jermlains are honored for their braided back and armpit hair. Shears are considered cursed and all shaving of victims is done with a dull knife. 2) They must eat hair in order to reproduce. It is unpleasant, but allows the males to perform. Females make elaborate macrame items or knit clothing to attract mates. 3) They are highly allergic to dander, shearing their captives makes them less likely to irritate their skin. 4)They burn the hair after soaking it in rancid smelling oils to serve as an aphrodisiac. 5) They actually are just obsessive wig artists and like throwing wig parties. The best wig at the party wins the Fuzzy Sceptre of Jermlainishness for a month. 6)

Huggamugger1 no sir,the sole pupose of "jinxkins" shaving of victims since they were introduced to D&D was nothing more than the beginning of a long and painful torture session that results in one or two possibilities they either a.) finish the torture and kill and consume the victim or B.) rob them,beat them and leave them naked and tied up to be devoured by random monsters or giant rats 50% chance of either.....these creatures are malicious in nature difficult to understand and are under no circumstances to be trusted! 🐀

I recently wrote a Jermlaine encounter into one of my game maps where they would emerge from their tunnels in a cliff face at the edge of a swamp. I thought they might perpetrate opportunistic night time raids on anyone pausing in, or passing through the area. I'm just working with first edition resources and i didn't find anything to suggest that they wouldn't leave the tunnels for forays into the surface world. You mention though that they prize surface food. I wonder, Is there any indication that leaving a subterranean environment would be completely out of character for Jermlaine?
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 6 лет назад
No, they are fully mobile, they, like rats, would make their treks as quickly as they could from one bolt hole to another, perhaps hitch a ride in the hold of an old cargo ship or cling to the undercarriage of a wagon.

Can anyone explain why the Snyad (Pesite) in the Fiend Folio (AD&D 1st edition) has a -4 Armour Class? Was this later changed in some kind of Errata or are they just super impossible to hit?
