Dungeons and Dragons Lore : Rakshasa

Rakshasas stand 6 to 7 feet tall and weigh between 250 and 300 pounds. Their natural shapes are relatively humanoid although they are clearly not human, as they appear more as humanoid beasts, usually tigers. Their hands also look disturbing to most humans, as their palms are where the back of the hands would be in humans. The Rakshasa are capable of hiding their disturbing appearance at any time, as they can choose any humanoid form at will. All rakshasas wear human clothing of the highest quality.

Supercool!!! Many years ago I ran an adventure whose story line I borrowed from the movie "Apocalypse Now", or more accurately, Conrad's famous "The Heart of Darkness" where the antagonist ('Kurtz' in both popular versions) was a Rakshasa. In my version, the players had to take their "river boat" up unto the depths of a tropical jungle to face this surprisingly charismatic and manipulative demon. Turned out to be one for the ages! Epic stuff to work with and nice job on the ecology.

Rakshasa is Indian (India Indian) based version of the undead, corporeal version. In their mythology, the corporeal undead is a virtually indestructible possession of a corpse by an evil supernatural force akin to a manifestation of Shiva. Why so many humanoid cat forms and not a super-enhanced human corpse? The animated great cat corpse is far superior to a human corpse for the most part if not a mere RakShasa food soldier. Possessing a body allows for some liberal body alterations, especially if you need not blend in. The AD&D version is 9.5/10 in translation to me.

I am binge watching AJ and hitting the Like Bottom along with catching up on your pass posts. They are fun reading. I also read that the Rakshassa along with some of my old India friends grand parents ghost stories. Those undead devils also took the forms of great apes to drag their screaming victims up trees to drop them into the darkness a few times breaking their bones till they die from shock and fear. Also their grandfathers said in their youth before WW II broke out back in India. They would wear animal masks and jump someone they didn't like as a group and bag that person's head. Then drag them up and down a staircase and toss them over a low wall a few times to get a really good scream out of them. Some ghost stories exist for a reason.

@@krispalermo8133 Ghost stories from other cultures are thrilling. Also the death cult (Cali, I think, the thugees) in India sometimes pretended to be Rakshassa to collect their murder victims. Hey, nobody looks into your cult if it's evil undead beings doing it and not you or your own, right? Well, that cult is long extinct now (we hope).

It is a divine mandate that keeps devils in the hells. Maybe even coming from the Overgod itself for all we know. But the take away is the very nature of reality keeps them bound to their home plane. And their absolutely lawful nature means they cannot do anything to subvert this without dire consequences. These are not demons who pervert reality just by existing. It may be in a perverse way but devils uphold reality.

In my homebrew world, much like gnolls were created by Yeenoghu; tabaxi were created by a powerful rakshasa. Also changelings and some tieflings are distant relatives of some rakshasa (tieflings resembling some catlike features).

I'm absolutely using a rakshasha for my next campaign. I think the group I have (a newly formed mercenary company) will find him in a cell early on in the first or second adventure. He'll offer his services as a merchant for the group at base camp, all the while steering them toward his own dark plots. I think I can pull this off with a very minimal amount of checks.

I've had a Rakshasa serving as an island Harbor Master and secretly running a local resort for wealthy influential types. So much information coming and going and plenty of food willingly staying after the Harbor Master's work offer convinces them to leave their life at sea. He's been revealed after a fairly messy gambit involving a rival crime boss and the family of a couple PCs came to a head. He will offer the party a means of rescuing a PC's husband from an unwittingly taken suicide mission in order to save his own skin and finish off the Crime Lord and his wife who have both been transformed after death into greater devils. Their power, wealth, and influence as well as their lawful evil natures in life and a Night Hag on payroll to help them avoid the typical path for new souls in Hell, but it also means they never learned the hard lessons devils learn over centuries. He's made the rescue mission dangerous enough to make killing him a waste of resources that could cost them everything if they choose to kill him on the material plane. When they return, battle worn, he'll be prepared and ready to eat

For the campaign I'm running right now, the NPC that runs the magic shop is a Rakshasa. The party does whatever he wants because they have no reason to mistrust him, and he rewards them well after a quest. He is one of the 3 main antagonists, two of which are secret (him being one) and the other openly evil. I'm honestly hoping for the party to makes an attempt to attack him, just because of how cool a payoff that their only magic supplier is against them... and then they realize that they're cut off.

I'm not sure they're powerful enough my rule of thumb is that something must be at minimum more powerful than an ilithid elder brain to grant warlock pacts, otherwise every mind flayer would have eldritch blast.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 2 года назад
@@benthomason3307 well, given how much the Illithid disdain the arcane arts I would say it is hard to tell if an elder brain could grant pacts. I would guess they can but hate such things with such a passion it would take a pretty deviant elder brain to do such. I imagine the colony would reject an elder brain who followed the arcane path enough to learn how to do it. But that would give the elder brain a reason to grant pacts. It needs able servants.

Trying decide how I would place the " Tiger Lords". Lords of the Darkest bamboo forests. Masters of illusion. Creatures of nightmare. Ravenna's lieutenants. They do work best in an Oriental sphere. Chinese and Japanese would have them as Tigers ... Indian myths are split... Tigers or Orangs with reversed claws. Regardless, they are almost akin to Kitsuné. A more advanced form of Hengyoki-like spirit creature. Portrayed in 1st Edition Dragon #84

The Aboleth in the book is the absolute bottom of the barrel for their kind. The rakshasa in book is the average rakshasa. Thus all you need to do ia have the Aboleth be a higher ranked one. An Aboleth that could overwhelm the devil. Aboleth are pretty damn scary.

@victorvaldez8869
@victorvaldez8869 6 лет назад
I've always thought it was an artistic representation of "double dealing," & covetousness. The backwards facing hands are confusing when they claim they are putting everything on the table (they aren't,) They represent covetousness as usually when your hands are at your sides they face inwards towards their body, but for the Rakshasa they are always reaching for MORE. At least that's my guess it is from Millennia old Hindu mythology.
