Imagine how useful an air genasi would be in space since they can just constantly exhale fresh air and don’t need any for themselves. I imagine they can negotiate a few extra gold pieces in their pay rate.
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
Air gensai would be cut off from the Plane of Air, if they travelled into the Phlogiston. I am not sure if that would be painful...or even fatal. (If I allowed them to be used as a PC race in a Spelljammer game, I'd be inclined to say that all their air-based abilities stopped functioning, until they got to another crystal sphere.)

Hey, unfortunately if X is portalled into wildspace, he will not have an air bubble! If it doesn't get teleported with him, there will be no air sticking to him. Air sticks to people when they leave an atmosphere, but if they get teleported without the surrounding air into wildspace, air will not magically appear around them.

My Spelljammer GM added the idea of using petrification for things like bulk transports, cargo-class passengers, or emergency life pods since a statue doesn't use resources. The character is turned to stone either at the beginning of the trip or when the pod is ejected and is changed back to flesh at the other end.

I'm running a spelljammer/ebberon campaign right now. A Warforged Juggernaut, Deva Wizard, and Changeling Artificer are the only ones standing in the way of the Starmind, an illithid super-hivemind that has begun to conquer the material plane for the Illithid empire once again now that the kingdoms of the gods that once defeated them have grown decadent and distracted.

Before Spelljammer, I had space-faring people. Spelljammer had me spend an entire summer converting and adapting my creations to Spelljammer and their creations to my universe. Working it to not be biased for my world's superiority was a challenge. I gave Spelljammer the travel time, Loom of Magus I made into a mega huge Silver Sphere of many solar systems. Once a spelljammer ship left the solar system on a bee-line to another solar system, speed was relative and it took a week. Classic Loom of Magus star travelers depended upon stargates and FTL travel. The bee-line areas and in-system had the Spelljammer wild space rules. Otherwise, it had Loom of Magus brutal rules based upon our universe. I could go on, but you get it and I'm sure you think of my pre-Spelljammer universe as more science fiction that AD&D... as I kind of do now.

We had a sea faring group. we found an old and used an old galleon we found not knowing at the time about spell jamming. we just used it to fly over the oceans and such. well we would land out of soite of ports and drop into the water. well. in one city. they had contact with spell jamming ships from other spheres. well we met a wizard who had spell jammed and wanted to get of planet.so we found the helm chair and the helm. and he got some sailors who helped us and we left .Pickett space and went explore. this way me and my friends connected our campaigns and had loads of fun

Superior gnomish engineering I say. You should take into consideration that even the Illithid, who make slaves of just about everyone they meet, consider Tinker Gnomes to be bad slaves. Not because they are resistant to psionic control or because they otherwise revolt but because when they genuinely try to help, they have a tendency to break ships...

It was the first new campaign setting for the 2nd Edition Era. And it tied into the big three campaign settings from the 1st Edition Era. Jeff Grubb did good. But it could have done with a revision, at some point. There was a rebooted Spelljammer, for 3rd Edition, but they totally changed the SJ universe, for that.

What exactly is a Spelljammer manipulating in order to move itself threw space? Is it warping magical space like the spell weave or is it something else? Can Druid's use a tree with a spirt(s) of its own to pilot a SpellJammer Helm? What about Fire Elemental, can it power a furnace SpellJammer engine?

I so missed this setting. But the idea of monks just meditating and making ships run...So fun. By the way you can work out how much food, water a. Crew needs very easily (per day) and then the amount of air the ship has per ton can be figured out too you get two numbers per person. That lets you track it easily.
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
Many of us in the Spelljammer community, convert things to Man/Days. You can convert air to Man/Days of air and do the same for food and water. Then if you have a crew of 20 people (including the PCs) you subtract 20 Man/Days worth of everything every day. And if two crewmen get killed, you start subtracting 18 Man/Days of stuff every day instead. And if you rescue four people marooned on an asteroid, after that, you start subtracting 22 Man/Days of stuff instead. A lot of people think that it's an easier way to deal with changes in crew numbers. BTW: Ki isn't just generated by monks. There are various other classes in the original Oriental Adventures book that generate a number of Ki points.

I would say that the Dwarves using the power of forging to fuel their ship is just a cultural reskin of the same form of power that comes from worship and mortal intent. Their crew must zealously believe that in forging magic items they are performing an act of divinity that radiates power from them, power that fuels the ship!

Use a Spelljammer too get to Athas and fight a draconic sorcerer king using some Nicol Bolas level stats. That sounds like a good time. Especially with some epic level characters piloting a souped up Nautiloid in an aerial dogfight with a god tier dragon that eventually results something akin to the ending of How To Train Your Dragon, but in space, and with a phlogiston explosion. This is why my DM never lets me get the dangerous artifacts. I want to do something stupid and epic XD
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
CGR1 The Complete Spacefarers Handbook states that there are no charts to the crystal sphere that Athas is in, and no Sorcerer King knows anything about spelljamming. Your PCs would need to discover Athaspace first. And they wouldn't even be looking for it, if they don't know it exists.
@potandpoliticswithmr.broph1420
Dude, what about the giant Space Hamsters used by Gnomes and the horror story they tell of the Great Space Hamster coming to exact revenge for the enslavement of her children? Which it turns out is actually Boo, the dwarf's animal companion in Baldur's Gate. If you disenchant it it grows to full size and eats you and the end boss if I'm remembering correctly. Why not rely on a supply of renewable goodberries? Is it an "exaggerated consumption will cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, explosive diarrhea and anal bleeding"-type of situation? Or is it more a "druid or ranger could be lost and/or killed - so... what do we eat now?"-type of situation? Edit: Goodberry really trivializes some survival elements (then again so does "Create food and water")

@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
We have a Cleric that does that in AuldDragon's live-streamed Spelljammer game, but you have to actually have the berries to use as material components. Our Cleric has bought a number of bushes, that we keep on our ship, and gets to roll on how many berries he can collect. The spell has been a lot more useful, when we have had to go down to hostile worlds, where we can only carry so much fresh food.

I love the idea of Spelljammer, but there is a plausibility problem that always comes up for my players and its not that physics work differently. It is that magical spells allow near instantaneous travel between planes (crystal spheres). It is very hard to present a space-faring economy as being realistic given the time, power levels, costs and risks involved in spelljamming, when they could just plane shift, teleport or use gate spells. Things can also get extremely wonky extremely quickly and not in a good way, when you have totally incompatible character types from one crystal sphere end up in another. A Drow on Krynn for example is just incredibly out-of-place, but a character from the Dark Sun setting arriving on any other world can be game breaking.
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
Sure, but Drow and Dark Sun PC races are not sore Spelljammer player options. People who look for flaws in Spelljammer generally seek out weird edge cases and ignore things like the fact that a Drow that joined a group of spacefarers would be away from the Underdark and all of their magical drow equipment would slowly degrade. Control the options (i.e. keep them logical) and have people onboard who want to make things work and they will work. Naysayers can break any campaign.

Well the closest thing they had to that is the Spirit Warriors the elves developed in the First Unhuman War. Basically they started with one of three types of insects which upon death were transformed into giant undead insectoid humanoids, with spelljamming helms soldered inside their chest cavities for their pilots to control them with. More Gundam than Voltron, but still a fun concept.

If there moving on the same path couldn't they still move towards a destination and be moving at tactical speed relative to each other? Seems like a risky move but could be worth it if the people navigating can keep track of that, it's not like it would really even affect combat.
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
If two ships move from one planet to another at Tactical Speed, they would both run out of air, food and water before they get there. Letting one get enough ahead to accelerate to Spelljamming Speed, will stop the other ship from being held back. So as soon as one accelerates to Spelljamming Speed the other can do the same thing. In theory, the second ship should bump into the gravity of the first ship, if the first ship stops and also stop. But if they were pointed in slightly different directions, they might spread out. So if several trade ships accelerated to Spelljamming Speed one after the other, it is theoretically possible that they could operate as a convoy, with the ships at the rear of the convoy arriving to help assist a ship in front of them that has been intercepted by a pirate ship. But I think it might be better for a GM to make navigation checks to see how many of the following ships are on the exact same heading. If you do decide to go down this route, it would be used by all factions, meaning that an attacking Mindflayer Nautiloid might have a second ship arrive if the players attack the first ship (and remain in the same area).

People on celestial bodies can not see beyond their own crystal sphere. The constellations they see are unique to their sphere. That means that Oerth, Krynn and Toril can all have totally different constellations and a GM does not need to line up all the stars.

Very interesting. I can't say I like the mechanics for steering the ship. Having to either hire a high level caster or sacrifice your own caster's spells just to pilot the ship efficiently doesn't seem quite fair to me. Personally I would just make a piloting skill and give it to everyone, with proficiency going to a few clases, and of course the rogue being able to take expertise in it as well, you know, because Swashbucklers... this way you'll never be truly stuck in space because your pilot is incapacitated, but not everyone is going to be a crack pilot as well. I would also create a number of mounts, like jet bikes and rocket surf boards that behave just like a ship, but are more nimble and can't do interstellar travel. Would a hex grid or square grid be more appropriate for mapping out this setting? And of course the first story arc to pop into my head while thinking about this setting: The party are back home, visiting an old friend who used to adventure with them. Miss Jessica Hawkins retired from the adventuring life, settled down and had a family. They opened the Benbow Inn shortly after and had a son, Jim Hawkins. Well, Mr. Hawkins ran out on them, the wanderlust getting the better of him, and so for several years its just been Ms. Hawkins and Jim running the Benbow. Tonight the gang has gathered to hold a late night birthday party for young Jim, who just turned 17, when they hear a loud crash outside. In the burning wreckage of a small skiff, they find a half crazed, panicked and blind dwarf named Billy Bones.... Treasure Planet was almost made for this setting. :)

So, I didn't hear it mentioned, can beings traveling from sphere to sphere also travel from the sphere of one overgod to another without any consequence (apart from time and distance)? for instance, if a group of say dwarves were to travel from Toril, leave their sphere, traverse impossible distances and enter a crystal sphere made by Thoon rather than by Ao, would they end up like the Obyrinth, all......altered?
@optimisticallyskeptical1842
@optimisticallyskeptical1842 5 лет назад
Yes, they can travel between spheres through the phlogistan that the different spheres float in. But travelers will not be altered by the act of traveling there. Though there rules offered that discuss how clerics receive their spells and commune with their deity.
@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
@@optimisticallyskeptical1842 1st and 2nd level spells are created by blind faith and can be regained in the Phlogiston and any crystal sphere. 3rd level and higher spells require a Cleric to have a connection with their deity. That connection is blocked in the Phlogiston and can not automatically be established in every crystal sphere. There is a spell called Contact Home Power that will open up that connection for one week. There is also a year-and-a-day ritual that a religious institution can carry out to open up a full-blown connection to their deity (effectively making that god or goddess into a local deity for the new sphere). (Hostile religions may decide to disrupt that ritual or even try to destroy the temple, if they detect what is going on.)

Okay i really like this Spelljammer stuff! Though i do have a quick question to make sure im not misunderstanding. So cosmologicaly the material plane holds many planets right? Like Torril and lets say Earth for ease sake cuz idk any official other worlds for dnd. Now other planes are seperate right? Would these other planes have a similar cosmology potentionaly? Ot for example would a mirrored plane like the Feywild have an entire Feywild version of each and every planet in the material plane??? @_@ like if we put our solar system in DnD would there be a feywild Mars in theory? Am i just taking this thought too far probably but its interesting >_>
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 5 лет назад
They feywild is not built exactly like the prime material plane, in some ways it is much less defined, the outer planes are also not planets and don't have a lot of fixed distances and such, or even a regular progression of time, so, you can experience a different scale and pace to things each time you go and visit them. Think of the feywild and shadowfell as flip sides to the mirror, you step through into the reflection and things there are similar, but very weird, for instance, in the Feywild, the light in the sky is not coming from a star, it is largely based on where you are, and you have to find some other way of counting time other than daylight and seasons.. because the daylight only changes when you move to somewhere else. In D&D theory, you could step into the feywild on Earth and find a path to step out of the feywild and be on Toril.

@DavidShepheard

There are many planetary systems in the Material Plane. Each planetary system is surrounded by a crystal sphere. The phlogistion lies between all of the crystal spheres. The crystal spheres bob up and down in the phlogiston. Within each sphere (Realmspace for Toril, Krynnspace for Krynn, Greyspace for Oerth, etc) the stars are objects on the inside of the crystal sphere. So each planet can have totally different constellations, because stars and suns are NOT the same thing in Spelljammer. Every world (whatever sphere it is in) can have connections to the Inner, Transitive and Outer planes... ...but there can also be some spheres with special laws of nature, where it is not possible to connect to one or more of the planes. Clusterspace (from the Astromundi Cluster boxed set) has a bit of a weird relationship with the planes. It is a "unique selling point" of the boxed set. If a RPG book doesn't specify an unusual cosmology, I would generally assume that the normal Great Wheel Cosmology works there.

The Pirates of Gith live in the Astral Plane and travel to Wildspace to raid ships. They actually like the living ships of the elves, as they can use their Plane Shift abilities to shunt those ships onto the Astral Plane. Presumably, they travel to those dead gods floating in the Astral Plane to trade their stolen goods. This wasn't fully explained by Spelljammer products as Spelljammer was cancelled before Planescape took up the other side of the story. But Githyanki are said to have Astral Ships.

hey AJ, off topic but... When you say an Obyrith is trans dimensional by nature and can be in numerous locations simultaneously, do they do this through creating aspects (like other demon lords do it) or is it an ability unique to Obyriths? i tried searching around for this info, but no luck.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 6 лет назад
They may do it multiple ways, the Obyrith is anything but a uniform species. Some may physically extend one body across multiple planes (that would be the weirdest version I can imagine), others might split into temporal duplicates of the same individual and thus be in two places or more, at one time. Others may create avatars or aspects, others may mentally possess other creatures and mutate them into a desired form, or enthrall them so severely, they lose all personal identity and truly consider themselves just another part of the Obyrith master.

@gilian2587
@gilian2587 6 лет назад
Phlogiston occurs when a large body of mass sweats. The exact mechanics of the sweating is not currently well understood; but it's thought to be similar to the process of generating glycerin from soap. When the chemist mixes sodium hydroxide with animal fat... a kind of saponification process occurs which produces a fatty acid salt and glycerin. For gravitational attraction to occur, a kind of 'energy' needs to be spent, this 'energy' is produced when the mass of the large body interacts with the space-time to produce curvature, the process of producing the 'energy' needed to produce the curvature also produces Phlogiston.
@DavidShepheard

I would suggest running a single-sphere campaign, at first, where you keep the PCs on a home celestial body and visit other celestial bodies in the same crystal sphere. Keep the other spheres vague and only start to detail them, when your players get interested in a plot that will take them on a phlogistion voyage to another world. You can also make generic ships and organisations and only tie them into a specific celestial body or sphere, when you use them.

AJ Pickett neat idea! What I was wondering though is, Since everything within a certain distance is affected by the gravity planes of the spelljammer, water seeks its own level, and water is heavier than air then if a large wouldn't the water begin to fill up the air bubble around the ship, pouring into and filling the hold, eventually reach the deck, begin flowing down the sides until it finally displaces all of the breathable air around the ship? I'm wondering if bailing or pumping it out of the hold or off the deck wouldn't work because water dumped over the side quickly find it's way back onto the deck. Or would the water form into a big ball underneath the ship? A free floating ball of water might become large enough to create it's own gravity well, but until the mass of water was greater than the mass of the ship, wouldn't the ship's gravity dominate? ooh... what about an aquatic spelljammer of sahuagin or merefolk surrounded by a big bubble of water? maybe I'm over thinking it... lol... but stuff like that kinda freaks me out ever since I saw the movie Passengers when Aurora (Jennifer Laurence) was trapped inside the giant water bubble in zero gravity! another question, what do spelljammers do with their waste? store it until they dock somewhere, because dumping it wouldn't work well since wouldn't it stick to the bottom of the ship? (or worse, orbit around it?)
@nvfury13

grymhild As to water filled/surrounded Spelljammers: Aboleths! In! Space!
@nucleardubs
@nucleardubs 6 лет назад
grymhild The gravity plane on a ship would cause the water to spread-out along the x and y axis of the plane as a flat puddle before moving along the z axis. Since water is much denser than air, the water counts as cargo and once the tonnage limit for your spelljammer helm is exceeded the ship will no longer be able to move. If the ship is totally surrounded by water, it will still retain its air bubble so crew can tread water on the surface and still breath. The only way to remove the water short of magical means is to have the ship enter the gravity plane of a larger mass, which could be very detrimental to a ship designed to have a watery atmosphere unless the water is sealed inside the hull. This is also a good way of getting rid of waste, fly by something bigger and let them deal with your garbage.

@DavidShepheard
@DavidShepheard 4 года назад
Physics already can't exist as in the real world. The D&D multiverse has only four elements (Air, Earth, Fire and Water) as opposed to our periodic table. The stuff that Jeff Grubb used is actually abandoned scientific theories from the past. Phlogistion theory is a theory about "stuff" containing something that makes it burn. Crystal spheres were thought to surround our Sun for a long time. The air envelope stuff makes ancient stories about ships sailing into space work. The thing that stops the instant death thing is that there is no momentum in Wildspace. Ships get near to each other, planets or monsters and simply stop relative to each other. And the fun thing is that you can run headlong into a scavver and it doesn't get splattered over the bow of your ship. Instead it instantly appears in the front of the air envelope of your ship and realises it might be able to eat something.
