I see some interesting books on Jeremy's shelf! I don't run D&D 5, but I am always impressed by the creativity and professionalism of the design and development of their beautiful products. Most D&D 5 products have something valuable to offer me, and so I have many. I like to adapt the elements I enjoy into the games I run (some of which I see on Jeremy's shelf!). Thank you for this video, Elle. And thanks to Chris and Jeremy for all their hard work and dedication. They have a difficult and precarious job. Well done, gentlemen!

Interesting thoughts. Agree about the professionalism; these two are consummate pros. I could only make out titles with big fonts: Holy Bible, Shadowrun, Humblewood and Top Secrets.

Decent interview and I’m looking forward to Tasha’s but I feel like Spelljammer has been teased before and they just dropped it completely from what they talk about. Hopefully after Baldur’s Gate 3 drops they will put out spelljammer content.

Cauldron : can't wait. 5e is one of the best balanced systems I have seen up to now, but also very streamlined, so this is quite cool! - Nov. 17, 2020 is sooo far away ! (release date for Canada) nb : only thing I feel 5e forget to tackle is making weapons a bit more balanced (some weapons remain more "meta", while other weapon choices and styles are shunned for being weaken in comparison). Before anyone reacts to this: balanced does also mean that Simple Weapons will be less efficient than Martial Weapons. If a fighter wants to go for a two daggers style, that choice is very weak. There are no perks that can make that choice even a bit viable (sure, you can be Dex-focused and take two-weapons styles, but it remains just a 1d4 without nothing to compensate). To multi-attack with a crossbow, you need a Feat, which is a pretty steep cost. You therefore pick a shortbow instead (or longbow if you have access to Martial weapons). Focusing on the crossbow is therefore really not a viable choice, though you can insist for flavor or RP, but you choose to lose a Feat in order to insist. - the armor table could use a tiny tweak or two, but not important otherwise.

I used the sidekick options from the Essentials Kit in order to square out my groups party of 3 and it REALLY helped. I didn't have to make a whole level 1 character or hope a monster stat was sufficient. It also fixes the issue i have of my group always recruiting NPCs because they like em, by having a system to just make one on the fly.
@TheMmfam
@TheMmfam 4 года назад
Curious, who controlled the sidekick player? You or one of the players?
@ViktorTheMusician
@ViktorTheMusician 4 года назад
@@TheMmfam in this case I controlled him. I should also note that our regular DM was absent, so I had to run a one-shot really quick and everyone voted on Skyrim (one player was a new D&D player so Skyrim helped her get familiar with it. The other had never played Skyrim so it was new to him). The sidekick in question was Ralof so I picked the warrior sidekick and then the option that wasn't Defender (I cant remember what it was called, but one of the other players said Ralof was absolutely not a defender because he steals everyone's kills). Regardless I had him be passive and the players would decide what they'd have him do, but all he could really do was attack. Before sidekicks (and when we played in person) I would make characters with class levels and write down all i could on index cards to pass to players who wanted an underling. If they were story sensitive I'd do the roleplaying but if they were just regular hirelings I'd let the players fully control them. Either way they had full combat control.

There is a lot of room for WoTC to publish more material about character generation where it's less about game mechanics but more about CHARACTER. Be it players run or NPC/sidekicks. I look forward to the book coming in November. I hope WoTC will look into releasing more player focused content instead of one every 3 years. Most books are pretty much only for the DM.
@Derry_A_Deryni

I made this coloring book with stickers. The stickers are parchment with black & white printing, the book (well it's just one page right now, + 2 pages of tables) character generation page is a stick figure with 12 sections, so for each section you roll a d12 and apply the appropriate sticker. Then the tables have color-coded crayons 8 of them, and you roll on the table to color in the sticker! As you color the sticker you tell the story of why it's that color while the DM is your scribe and writes down what you say translating it at the same time into D&D mechanics. That way, the character's outside matches what you are imagining it's inside, both motivations & excuses, revenges & avenges, preferences & compliances. And it's simple as rolling, roling, coloring, & narrating!

I can't watch these videos without thinking about all the people that create homebrew using the OGL that are having their profits siphoned or their creativity stifled while WotC brings us sub-par adventures and compendium books that have to be heavily edited to be usable (like the magic item crafting rules in Xanathar's Guide or most of the Avernus module). Coupled with their new take on setting design, we now have a complete lack of decent campaign settings. Greyhawk, gone. Ravenloft, gone. Eberron, 3rd party release. Anything on Toril except Faerun, gone. Want to create your own campaign setting? You can't advertise it with the phrases Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, Dungeon Master, Dungeon Master's Guide, or Dungeons and Dragons anywhere in the text. TLDR: You guys make a game about using your imagination, "open source" the rules, and then prohibit the people running and creating content from using their own imaginations. Great business model.
@billthecanuck
@billthecanuck 4 года назад
im sorry how exactly do they stop you from using your own imagination? is there some sort of mental block in your head stopping you from making your own world and homebrewing your own content? i really dont understand the point of this post.
@UnhinderedGirl

While I do in part agree that the rules presented in Xanathar’s Guide concerning magic item crafting could be better systematized (though it’s also a matter of grokability, to use a Mark Rosewater term), I’ll point out a few things in response to your comment: 1. First off, Eberron wasn’t printed through a third party. “Eberron: Rising from the Last War” is a WotC product. 2. Secondly, while older settings such as Greyhawk and Ravenloft have been relatively left to the side for now (although Barovia is accessible through “Curse of Strahd”), a number of setting books have been printed which have been incredibly well-reviewed by the community, especially the MtG settings, which have managed to bring in even more players due to their history with the card game. 3. Combining the first and last issues you brought up concerning the Open Gaming License and homebrew, the fact that WotC holds the use of certain phrases key to their IP should be understandable. There are alternatives, such as Game Master in place of Dungeon Master, and thus this isn’t a barrier to developing homebrew. In addition, the pricing problems most homebrew designers run into isn’t only the fault of WotC, as the OGL, their unique form of allowing types of homebrew, doesn’t deal with profit sharing. Now, the DM’s Guild does, and there are plenty of issues with the service. However, the fault there also rests with OneBookShelf, who started the partnership with WotC. Finally, I will say, even the pricing problems with DM’s Guild are understandable, as homebrew done through the service is based on the SRD and other content WotC has made available for use. 4. In summary, while I understand where your comments about creativity are coming from, I think that WotC has maintained a good relationship with players designing homebrew, both through DM’s Guild and the OGL. In terms of quality content, while I do think that some mechanical aspects of 5e should be made less ambiguous and perhaps a bit more systematized, the supplementary books and campaign settings have each been relatively well-reviewed, and my personal opinion is that they’ve each brought vigor to things that had been lacking previously, and I’m glad to see a number of them being compiled together with a large host of new designs, mechanics, and flavors in “Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything”.

Im whising they will implement a shaman class. Right now they have totem barbarian but itsnt much of a caster. I want to create a connection with nature, spirits and the ancients. Druids are not the same thing as shamans. I hope they will try to create something with that in the future. There is DMsguilds shaman class which is cool, but all DMs think its is OP....
