First off it’s a amazing fucking movie the fact that people go to watch a war movie for the action and explosion just shows how small the capacity of peoples attention are. If you think this movie is boring then you wouldn’t like movies like the Green mile or shawshank redemption or America Beauty. Like I don’t give a fuck if the camera is staring too long into the distance. Like go watch the fast and furious or fucking Resident evil or a fucking Marvel movies. Which don’t really get nominated for anything nor will they be remembered for anything . Like this movie has so much going for it from the music too the cinematography to the realism in the movie. The fact anyone even thinks this is just plane boring movie just shows where we are headed in society. Thank God for like people Christopher Nolan still exist because honestly he puts so much love and a lot of dedication into these movies.

Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you on this one. I think this film is a masterpiece! (Gets better every time I watch it!) I love that Nolan decided to cast a relatively unknown actor as the lead and gave more well known actors smaller but impactful roles.(Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance) He wanted to focus primarily on the event itself and shine a light on the incredible bravery of the men/women involved in these terrible circumstances. The scene when Kenneth Branagh's character looks out and see's all the civilian ships showing up to help(with Hans Zimmers fantastic score building to that moment) gives me goosebumps every time. Or when the soldiers cheer as Tom Hardy flies overhead after taking out the final German fighter pilot. Brilliant stuff!!
@rupman27isback
@rupman27isback 4 года назад
Here's my issue with the movie.. i can care less if it has unknown actor's. I also knew what this movie was before going in. I knew we would know nothing about the chracters. But at the end of the day. I dont care about this event. It was boring!! You rarely have any enemies seen. Dialogue was boring as well. When the film tries to get suspensful.. it was kind of cool but the pay off was wasted. The only thing I found fascinating was that little rescue ship and what happens on there lol. Again, nothing really happens in the movie. If this was the first ever war movie film made.. obviously it will be something special.. but there's sooo many war films that blow this one out of the water... I will say 1917 had some kind of similarities and did it much better.
@CopperFather
@CopperFather 4 года назад
I have a feeling a lot of the people that “don’t get it” or “don’t care about the event” are American. Guarantee if Nolan did a 9/11 film in the style of Dunkirk they’d eat it up. I believe this is a fantastic film and even though they didn’t focus on one character or give a backstory I felt myself caring for them. The soundtrack was amazing and it had me on the edge of my seat. Not sure how people found it boring.

@rupman27isback
@rupman27isback 4 года назад
@@CopperFather That's kind of a BS thing to say... I think it depends how the movie is made. Here's a great example..look at 1917.. you don't really know too much of the characters or really the event. But it was just more intriguing. Great acting.. characters.. better feeling of emotion..the cinematography by Deakins was phenomenal.. it had great music and an orignal song in the actual movie..it did a better job of you feeling for those soldiers.. the ending was more on a grand level as well when he ran across that battlefield.. Dunkirk to me was .. it just looked great. That's really it. I wasn't emotionally invested. Simple as that.
@rupman27isback
@rupman27isback 4 года назад
@@mariolopez3728 Amen to that. And don't get me wrong..i love all different types of war films.. The Thin Red Line is very different and very out there and to me that's a masterpiece.. Dunkirk was only popular cause it looked and sounded great and had Nolan's name all over it. If it was made by a nobody.. people wouldn't care.

I'm sure plenty of others have suggested this already (and will probably do so in this comment section!), but a ranking of your favorite war pictures might be a good idea at some point: given the small number you say you love, coming up with a list shouldn't be too difficult, and it could also be a chance to invite recommendations; it's certainly a genre whose movies get widely seen, but there are also plenty of great little-known ones.

Here’s the thing, I love Nolan and I like most war movies especially taking place in this era. I still don’t find this movie rewatchable. The lack of story and characters bothered me too. Probably Nolan’s weakest next to Interstellar.

This is a rare one: a war movie that my military friends like more than my civilian friends do. I said before that this film could be titled Battlefield: The Movie, as it puts the whole thing in miniature, with aircraft at very low altitudes and short ranges, ships that sink almost instantly with another one close by to which you can swim, and so on. I’m rather split on this approach, as it does feel rather video-gamey at times, but since it was applied so consistently throughout the movie I could buy that it was a deliberate choice by Nolan rather than just corner-cutting or laziness (though I’d still have preferred a more realistic style). This method - along with the differing timelines - does manage to create a lot of genuine tension here, but it does so at the expense of a more cerebral experience, which is unusual for Nolan, who usually works on both tracks in his movies. He doesn’t always succeed, of course, but this movie I don’t consider a failure since I got the sense he was only trying for the former anyway. Call it the war-movie equivalent of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, though I liked this film more than that one. Many of the more popular (and critically-acclaimed) war movies of my lifetime are ones I don’t love: Sam Mendes’ recent movie 1917 comes to mind, as does Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. Like Dunkirk, those two movies are more successful on the visceral side of things than the cerebral, though unlike Dunkirk I felt that they were trying - though not succeeding - to do both. Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima movies, as well as Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, achieved a better balance. Perhaps the best at doing that was David Lean, who made movies like Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai. Overall we agree on most things about this film, though it still comes out to a different final verdict and a different placement in Nolan's filmography.
@leafsfan1728
@leafsfan1728 4 года назад
DistinguishedFlyer I would say that your military friends appreciate it more because it is a much more accurate depiction of warfare than what Hollywood typically churns out. The men and women who fought and died in these wars are like you and me...they're somebody's father/mother or grandfather/grandmother or great grandfather/great grandmother and it's refreshing to see a filmmaker focus on the incredible event in history, instead of casting some well known lead actor to ham it up in front of the camera and give some rousing speech etc...
@distinguishedflyer
@distinguishedflyer 4 года назад
@@leafsfan1728 I think that's part of it (the principal characters in each thread are fairly ordinary), as well as the undeniable tension in the film and the sense of it being just one thing after another: the battle's place and significance in the War is really not paid any mind except in the scenes involving Branagh's character. Certainly those things were in the plus column for me. Sometimes a difference like that shows itself in other types of movies: Whiplash, for instance, is much more a favorite of my military friends than my civilian ones, probably because we can relate to it much more.

I think it really comes down to liking the style of the movie. It's a movie about an event, so Nolan tries to put the event front and center and the characters in the background and they're just reacting to the event. I personally am a big fan of that, but I totally get why some people aren't

I share the EXACT same thoughts on this movie, Cody. I thought Dunkirk was boring as shit. A very well-made movie, but just not enjoyable to watch for me. I'm actually not a war movie guy either. I, too, can count on one hand how many war films I've seen and legitimately love. It's not my genre either. Due to that fact, I actually had no intentions of seeing it. My Dad, on the other hand, is very much a war film buff and wanted to go see it, but nobody else was interested and he wasn't going to go by himself. So he asked my sister and I if we wanted to go by any chance, and we agreed mainly to just spend some time with him. I had trouble staying awake. Was constantly dozing off and probably missed a couple of parts. It was definitely a struggle to get through, and that's not how you want your experience to be. When you're waiting for a movie to just end already so you can leave, you know it wasn't worth it. Absolutely ZERO interest in ever watching this movie again.

I’m a big war movie guy but I avoided this film when it came out and I still haven’t seen it. It’s just really hard to bring myself to watching a PG13 war movie. That’s just me though. And honestly, the teaser trailer for this was played every time I went to the theater leading up to the movie coming out and the trailer was so long and loud, it annoyed the living hell out of me and it turned me off even more from checking out the movie.

This is definitely Nolan's most 'British' film to date in more ways than one. He clearly was trying to reach a specific audience with this one.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who found this movie absolutely boring, and I say that as a huge history buff. I appreciated the authenticity, but it’s just not an engaging movie. I thought 1917 was the movie that Dunkirk was trying to be, and it did it much better even though they are about two entirely different wars and events.

I don't think that Cody will review it. While he's a huge horror movie buff...he's not really that much into the subgenre of zombie horror films. But as for me....I've seen Train To Busan and found it amazing! One of the best zombie movies ever made! A sequel has been made and it should come out in 2021.

I am a war movie fanatic and i would say this movie was pretty boring and uninteresting as a war film . And I love history and world war 2 ,truth be told it barely would make my top 100 war films ,a nd if you are going to go with a war film that is all about experience and cinemtagrophy then i would say 1917 is a far more succesfull experience .
