I spoke to a ww2 veteran a few months before he passed away. He said the french were amazing. They fought until the last bullet to allow the brits the chance to escape. They understood the importance of allowing the brits a chance to escape to regroup and fight again another day, so the french died fighting for that cause and hope. The veteran said he was one of the last men to escape, he escaped on a small paddle boat, he said he can’t describe how petrifying it was to know you were going to get killed if you did not escape. I had so many more questions I wished I had asked him. Unfortunately that time has passed now.

@jeremybunn8473
@jeremybunn8473 3 года назад
I think Hitler expected the British to negotiate with Germany as feelings among most of the British aristocracy and Establishment were sympathetic ( and quite well connected ) to the Nazis war against Bolshevism. This is one theory for Hitler holding back for a few days during the Dunkirk campaign.
@bobshenix
@bobshenix 3 года назад
Hitler felt like what his army had just accomplished excluded the possibility of continued war against Britain... what happened at Dunkirk wasn't really a miracle as much as a matter of the trapped Allied armies being spared as a gesture of goodwill to Britain, who Hitler was convinced would then come to terms and cooperate against Stalin. It's very well documented that Hitler never wished to fight the Brits or even challenge their naval supremacy. The lesson I suppose is to never make such assumptions, never squander a golden opportunity to destroy the enemy.
@bobshenix
@bobshenix 3 года назад
@@jeremybunn8473 It's pretty obvious that is what happened. When I was in school Dunkirk was characterized as a miracle but in the years since I've come to realize it was largely a moment of weakness/overconfidence/wishful thinking by Hitler. He never dreamed Britain would refuse to come to terms after what amounts to a serious gesture of goodwill on his part. For somewhat obvious reasons (mostly political), this reality is obscured in Western history texts.
@youraveragescotsman7119
@youraveragescotsman7119 3 года назад
@@bobshenix Hitler didn't order the halt, Von Rundstedt did. His Panzer Divisions had been fighting for 3 days without rest, had outrun their Infantry and Artillery support and were suffering 50% attrition rates for their Tanks. On the side of the Allies in Dunkirk they had good defensive positions, AT Guns, Tanks and, with no way out, would fight ferociously. Von Rundstedt ordered the halt because, well, wasting his Panzers at a worthless attack on Dunkirk could have cost the Invasion of France dearly. Tanks, without Infantry, will get butchered in Urban Combat. Just look at Turkey wasting it's Leopard 2s by sending them into cities alone, only for some teenager with an RPG-7 to put a rocket in the side of it. Invading Dunkirk would have been a waste of time and material for a 50% chance of grabbing a few extra kills/POWs, or losing multiple Panzers and having to retreat while the Allies get away, thus making the rest of the invasion potentially fail or have much higher casualties. Hell, the Armies at Dunkirk could have even counterattacked if they repealed the Germans, which would have been disastrous for Germany and their logistics.

I cannot understand how these soldiers, often fighting one-on-twenty, still find the strength to repel every attack. It’s amazing. I find in these French soldiers the same flame as in those of Verdun in 1916. " “Dunkirk is for us [the Germans] a setback. Almost all of the British Expeditionary Force and part of the French 1st Army escaped us, because a few thousand brave Frenchmen blocked our access to the sea. The conversations where good, but it still came down to Hitler's War of the Generals. Hitler wanted to take credit for everything that went right and blame others when things went wrong. And letting 300,000 British troops slip through his fingers, was well worth it to Hitler to have a handful of Generals in his grasp. There is much of Hitler's motives that we can never definitely know, but one thing we can know for sure, after Dunkirk the Sitzkrieg was definitely over.

The bravery of the civilian men that sailed across the channel to help their fellow countryman is a characteristic and a strength that lies deep within us all. We don’t often find ourselves in situations or circumstances that cause and require us to summon that kind of selfless heroism. When the stakes are as high as having to protect your homeland from the threat of tyranny, suffering, and subjugation of your fellow countrymen I think most people would sail that proverbial boat straight into a war zone in order to keep that from happening. That kind of power is in the hearts of all good men and women and it’s that strength that evil men fear and wish to stomp out. We are constantly divided in this country and I find myself falling victim to the tribalism in our media all the time. Feeling forced to pick a side and trying to push my opinion onto other almost in a dogmatic way. For that I am guilty and I know many others are as well. We all must remember that as Americans we have to stand up to that same kind of evil that was exhibited at dinkirk by the German leaders. There is nothing more that the most powerful evil selfish egomaniac men want in the world than to divide us and make us easy to control. We must stand together and we must all be willing to sail into war for our brothers and sisters no matter what political or religious values we each hold individually.

No, they wouldn’t have surrendered. This Germanic obsession of winning one battle = win the war is so preposterous it has to be countered at every turn. Britain, safe behind the channel, would build up its army again while fighting on every other front and wait for the “New World” aka the Dominions (and not the USA like everyone believes) to build up their own strength and help liberate France/defeat Germany. To put it bluntly, no general in their right mind would fold with the hand Britain was dealt. This was always the plan. The British have been doing this strategy since the War of the Spanish Succession because it works. What difference if France is captured when Germany can’t even grow enough food to feed their own people, much less oil for their machinery.

Terrific video! Loved the detail and the obvious homework done behind the talk. I would like to add two small suggestions, which I believe will help your delivery: 1. Pronounce the word "a" as "uh" Nobody pronounces it "ay". 2. Pronounce the word "the" as "thuh" when it precedes a consonant sound, such as "the plane" or "the tank" but pronounce it "thee" when it precedes a vowel sound, such as "the apple" or "the honest man" or "the X-ray".

Armchair Historian: posts a video RU-vid: Demonitized

The Battle of France was a stunning victory for Germany. I can’t imagine how good it would’ve felt for those men after they fought so bravely and achieved what the previous generation couldn’t. That being said the British and French also fought with much courage and stubbornness and even had the Germans panicking at times. But all in all they gave the Allies a good lesson in modern combined arms warfare and a reminder that war had evolved way beyond the conservative trench tactics of The Great War.

Belgians? Maybe they were Waffling? Hitler advanced through many countries because he blackmailed the leaders of that country. Hitler knew about their wrongdoings more than their people knew; so to stay in power as Hitler promised, they did not put up a fight.? Seems like there was a lot of screwing the public was happening in many Countries. Hitler took advantage of that.

@@thecommonfool2110 this is what he mean't Despite our overwhelming numerical superiority, the French counterattack in several points. I cannot understand how these soldiers, sometimes fighting 1 to 20, still find the strength to assault. It’s amazing. I find in them the same passion as those of Verdun. We do not pierce anywhere and suffer terrifying losses, some battalions have lost more than 60% of their troops sometimes even more. D'autres citations: "Despite our overwhelming numerical and material superiority, French troops counter-attacked in several places. I can't understand how such brave soldiers, fighting in various places at one against ten (sometimes even one against thirty), still manage to find enough strength to go on the assault: it's simply amazing ! I find among the French soldiers of Dunkirk the same ardour as that of the poilus of Verdun in 1916. For several days hundreds of bombers and guns have been pounding the French defences. However, it is still the same thing, our infantry and tanks cannot break through, despite some ephemeral local successes." " "Dunkirk proves to me that the French soldier is one of the best in the world. The French artillery, so feared in 14-18, once again demonstrated its dreaded effectiveness. Our losses are terrifying: many battalions have lost 60% of their strength, sometimes even more! “ "By resisting about ten days to our forces, which were significantly superior in terms of numbers and resources, the French army achieved a superb feat in Dunkirk that is to be commended. It certainly saved Britain from defeat, by allowing its professional army to reach the English coast." General Von Küchler commandant of the XVIII army during the last stand of the french army to cover the british at Dunkirk. "May 18th 1940: the Führer still worries a lot about the southern flank. he's furious and claims that we take the best path to make the whole campaign fail ! The french troops never stops counter-attacking. May 21st 1940: that day starts in an extremely tense atmosphere: reports indicates a serious pressure on the northern flank of the IVth army. The VIth army faces a solid front. May 22nd 1940: our tanks, that are currently fighting in the south, have met a powerful enemy. Our panzerdivisionen suffer too many losses and attack without being required to. Stress is growing. May 23rd 1940: the losses for the tanks of our ten panzerdivisionen reach 50% ! The french resistance is fierce." General Franz Halder's diary, one of the chief of staff of the Wehrmacht "Those frenchs, under the brave command of general Molinié, have during four critical days contained not less than seven german divisions that, otherwise,would have participated to the attacks of the Dunkirk perimeter. Thoses troops thus brought a splendid contribution to the safety of their luckier comrades and of the BEC." Winston Churchill in his War Speeches, talking about the french resistance at Lille Adolf Hitler respond to the journalist Lutz Koch, coming back from Bir Hakim: “You heard what Koch just said. Bir Hakeim is new evidence of the thesis I always defended: the French are, after us, the best soldiers in Europe. After the war, we will absolutely have to build a coalition which may contain a country capable of military exploits such as Bir Hakeim wich stun the world”.

@@jeanlanes962 The battle of Britain wasn't the only decisive factor in stopping the Germans from invading, The Kreigsmarine (excuse my spelling) was severely "wounded" in the early parts of the war and during the Norway campaign. Plus, British bombing efforts ensured that the German navy would struggle to build ships and landing craft required.
@Harry-xu2yn
@Harry-xu2yn 4 года назад
@Denise Bond you don't need to bring Brexit into this mate, we're talking about ww2 and *Son Gohan* makes some good points however, we'd have struggled, just as much as the Germans did, on our own to make a landing. And by that I mean that the Germans couldn't have landed if they wanted to.
@Harry-xu2yn
@Harry-xu2yn 4 года назад
@@jeanlanes962 The British can't be expected to hold out on all fronts, France fell because the allies weren't prepared for the new modern warfare and unfortunately the French military industry after WW1 couldn't cope with it, not to mention the French brain drain after WW1. And the British were forced to leave Norway in order to protect the isles after France fell. But that wasn't before the British saved their royal family from the Germans and exiled their government in London. A gesture which the Norwegian still thanks us for to this day.
