Pretty sure that it was part of general air force training-always to keep a calm voice when communicating over radio. I once saw an old recording of a WWII American Bomber being attacked by fighters, with a young gunner exclaiming loudly over the radio that they were under attack. Almost before he even finished his sentence, an older voice chimed in (presumably a more experienced crew member) sternly telling him to stay calm and to lower his voice.

I love how low key this dog fight is. No big fireball, no dramatic moves, just teamwork, a quick burst and a slow decent of the enemy plane into the ocean. mixed with the rattle of metal and the pulsating soundtrack this scene is probably the best dogfight in modern cinema.
@Jaeger_89
@Jaeger_89 3 года назад
It's actually how a WWII dogfight would really look like. Much like some other media portraying combat, choosing to go for the slow-paced, heads-ducked-beneath-cover and short bursts rather than guns blazing and excessive explosions. Combat, be it aerial or not, looks much different than what people are used to seeing in movies.

So, dumb military historian moment here. Pre-war, the RAF was fiddling with all kinds of air battle tactics... how many aircraft form a combat element [think 'infantry squad' in aircraft terms], how much control should the flight leader have over the engagement, all sorts of stuff. At the beginning of the War, they deployed in flights of 3 or 5 aircraft, a flight leader and two to four wingmen, all under strict ground control. This is what's depicted in this clip. Air combat maneuvering consisted of how well a pilot kept in his V formation as the flight leader dictated the maneuvers! You see, this is a recipe for getting your ass kicked. The leader has to control 2 to 4 members and somehow try to wrangle the whole formation into position so they can all fire on the same target. This is rather like trying to herd cats, only with less organization. By the middle of the Battle of Britain, the RAF had gone to the Luftwaffe's system of a leader and wingman [basically not a whole lot different than from War One], where the leader was the 'shooter' and the wingman kept the bad guys off the leader's tail. Note that by early 1942, everyone's fighters were doing it this way. So I LOVE this clip in the movie as the RAF fighters are shown having to do this, and how the pilots are shown having less skill than their Luftwaffe opponents at high G maneuvering. It is a subtle kind of authenticity that a historian spots and gives him smile.
@notlikely4468
@notlikely4468 4 года назад
Those close formations.... You can watch your lead....or look for enemy....not both The loose offensive/defensive pair...you hunt while I watch...then I hunt while you watch...always keeping one foot on the ground Saved lives There's a theory about adopting technology....you use it to solve old problems And I think that applies to Battle of Britain tactics Radar and RT in aircraft for WW1 pilots who had great vision was a tool for command and control..."big wing" For the pilots with average vision it was a tool to see the enemy before they saw you And....there are far more "average" than "exceptional" pilots...but the exceptional tend to get the loudest voice Today...AWACs put together packets of air defence suppression and ECM elements leading multi-role fighter/bombers protected by air superiority fighters with tankers in support to re-fuel and SAR orbiting in the wings So...the "big wing" lives...just fly the assigned mission....leave the thinking to us

@MrStig691 Even in their post war service history, the RAF themselves stated that their pre-war tactics did not focus enough on dogfighting and High-G maneuvering and relied too much on rigid control by the flight leader.

Can you tell me why the brits were portrayed so incompetent? I'm no fighter pilot, but even I know that it takes time for the bullets to arrive on target and they also drop over distance, but in this clip it seems nobody told this to the pilots as they all started firing when they aligned their sights with the other aircraft. I even remember one of the fighters shooting a whole second of round at water. I kept seeing this incompetency throughout the whole movie, where the brits were almost made out not to have any basic surviving skills at all, let alone combat experience. Was it really this bad?
@carlhicksjr8401
@carlhicksjr8401 4 года назад
@@SgtKanyo I'm not a fighter pilot either, but I've read a bit from RAF and Luftwaffe pilots about the early stages of the War. Several points were made clear from both... - In between the Wars both the RAF and the Luftwaffe put more faith in bombers than in fighters. Bombers got the better aircrew and had better promotion prospects. - The Germans had the benefit of recent combat experience in Spain, and saw to it that that experience was spread throughout the Luftwaffe as much as possible. - Something that both the RAF and Luftwaffe make *very* clear: each individual engagement only offered seconds of actual experience in judging deflections and in how far to lead your target. The gunsights were primitive and relied on the pilot's intuition and reflexes in order to get a hit. - It's hard as hell to judge deflection angles, firing times, when you have two aircraft juking around in three dimensions. As I say, I'm no expert. I've never flown an aircraft much less had a dog fight in one. This is just the distillation of what I've read.
@SgtKanyo
@SgtKanyo 4 года назад
@@carlhicksjr8401 I feel the movie would have felt more authentic if the pilots had basic common sense in leading their targets and maybe the enemy got lucky by manouvering somewhere else, rather then the pilots shooting at hostile water molecules. And in training did the RAF had live fire excercises? I mean for example if a pilot dives down to engage at a ground target with tracers, he could see roughly how fast the bullets would fly and how much time it might take to hit said target. From a movie that trys to portrait the realistic side of war, I somehow always pick up on these little details and they do quite irritate me, since it makes it feel like (well for me), that this is the first time they shot their guns. I kept thinking, is there a fucking delay between pulling the trigger and the gun firing?

As much I love this scene, I was always confused with this shot: 2:57 . They shot the messerschmit down, and suddenly a second messerschmit appears and shoots at Farrier. But he doesn't say anything about it, he just stays calm, like nothing happened. And they both start to worry about their leader, but wtf? Didn't enemy just fly above them? Maybe it's bad editing, but I don't want to believe that, because dunkirk is such an amazing movie with awesome editing.

What that BF109 did was called a "Boom and zoom" tactic where it dives down at extremely fast speeds, shoots, and then dives back up to it's original altitude using it's momentum. Farrier would have never been able to catch the BF109 in this case which is why he just let it go I am assuming.

The first significant use of Spitfires in combat occurred during the Dunkirk Evacuation - so this is correct The Vic formation was correct ( lead and 2 wing men ) But where are the other 9 planes in the squadron ? The 8 brownings had 300 rounds each - which gave a total firing time of 15 seconds . Would RAF Sector Command vector them to drop to 500 feet to approach a combat area ? - No Would chain home (RDF ) be able to see where the bandits were, and be able to vector the RAF squadron onto target - probably. Two Noob mistakes - 1) flying straight in a combat zone 2) watching the enemy go down The idea of dog fighting is a myth. It was more come out of the sun, and shoot the enemy in the back, at close range before they even knew you were there.

Luftwaffe fighter pilots flew in a formation called a "schawm" - which was a loose formation of four 109's. So where are the other three 109's ? There is no way a Luftwaffe pilot would have flown over the spitfires giving away his presents.

Dunkirk could be the first in a three part movie series; Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the liberation of Colditz prison. Don't know why Nolan didn't plan for at least one sequel. It was announced 4 yrs ago that Ridley Scott was supposed to do a movie about the Battle of Britain but I haven't seen anything recent on that. The movies could feature the amazing story of RAF fighter pilot Douglas Bader. Bader flew the Hurricane and Spitfire with two tin legs. He lost both legs from the knees down in a horrific crash in 1931 and learned to walk again on tin legs made for him. After many failed attempts to get the RAF to reinstate him as a pilot, they finally acquiesced in 1940 because they were desperate for experienced pilots. Because the blood in his body would pool only to his knees / stumps, Bader could pull more G's than any other pilot which was a great advantage in a dogfight. He was quickly promoted as a squadron and then wing leader and racked up a high kill rate until he lost the tail of his Spitfire in a collision w a 109 over France. He bailed out w only one of his two tin legs (the other one got stuck in the plane) and was captured by the Germans. He actually got them to allow the RAF to parachute in another leg and then he escaped twice! The Germans got fed up with it and shipped him off to Colditz prison where he sat out the rest of the war. It was at Colditz that RAF pilots created a secret workshop and built a glider which was going to be used for an escape by launching it out a large window in the upper part of the castle. As the war drew to a close, the Wehrmacht actually joined with American forces to fight off an SS detachment that was intent on killing the prisoners in Colditz - the only time in the war Germans switched sides. A movie about Bader would be perfect because Bader was controversial figure in the RAF. Some pilots swore by him, others were critical of certain tactics Bader used. The third movie could feature Bader in Colditz with the secret workshop / glider and finale with the battle where the Germans join with the Americans to fight the SS.

When the ships started to rescue the Dunkirk troops it was SAD to see about 4 or 5 boats in the movie. Couldn't they CGI the background. Scenes like the British troops running along the beach promenade and seeing Modern day Light fixtures and buildings. Game of Thrones accomplished so much better than this movie. I'm not an expert on anything related to air combat. But I would like to better understand the logic behind this low altitude patrol. Enemy aircraft would be able to see the Spitfires from a higher altitude and pounce, just as they did in this clip. The Spitfires would be trying to climb out of the kill zone, bleeding airspeed in the process. They used teamwork effectively against an individual enemy fighter and unprotected bomber, but what if they faced more enemies? The Luftwaffe was quite strong in 1940, definitely able to launch more planes from French aerodromes than we see here.

They pushed too far at the end, with the out-of-fuel situation, but I just can't think of another movie that captures so much of the reality of World War II dogfighting. An absolute masterpiece.

Thanks for having an accurate looking cockpit for the actors. God it made me angry when the old movies would use interior sets for flying scenes and the carpets would seem much too roomy!

Because when they do "ego-casting" so little nothings like Harry Styles can play at acting it devalues the whole thing. Same as Sheeran in GoT.
@christoph404
@christoph404 3 года назад
@@agnostic47 bit unkind there!! to be fair to Harry Styles his performance was not singled out by critics or reviewers as being detrimental to the film, in fact from press reviews I've read his acting debut was met by favourable and positive comments, I thought he did fine, I believed him , but then Im a middle aged man and when I watched the movie I had no idea who he was until my niece brought me up to speed on his teen idol career, I'd heard the name of course, so in some ways my impression of him was totally impartial , a transition from a singing career to acting is quite common I think, some are better at it than others I guess.

This movie had a lot of potential, but imo that was thrown out by the fact of how slow it was. Irl the beaches and ships were constantly being bombed, but in the movie it was more or less just everyone sitting around with no more than 3 planes in the sky at a time. I understand budget and all of that but c'mon couldn't of had more than 3 planes in the sky?

One sincere regret is that the ugly Spanish "Buchon" version of the Messerschmitt Me - 109 is shown instead of the real, authentic Me - 109 E versions in "Dunkirk" as well as "The Battle of Britain". With its lower - powered Merlin rather than the DB - 601 (later 605) engine, the "Buchon" looks like a cross between the original beautiful, ballerina - like, graceful swan that it actually was, and - an ugly stork! How grotesque!

There are pictures of a Spitfire that the Germans retro-fitted with the DB engine for a laugh. It actually outperformed both the original Spitfire and the Bf 109!
