Dunlin amazing high tide roost. On the bank of the River Thames I found a gathering of Dunlin, Calidris alpina, roosting at high tide. By sitting and waiting at the water's edge I was able to witness this amazing high tide gathering of Dunlin at much closer quarters than I had imagined. When the tide was out the Dunlin were feeding on the mud flats but as the water level increased they formed a flock, wheeling around in flight as they approached their favourite high tide roost area. Among the Dunlin there was also a surprise.

Dunlin is my favourite shorebird here in Canada. I didn't realize they are your most numerous shorebird over there. You're lucky :)

Yes, I felt really lucky to see them at such close range on several occasions when I was making this video. When I saw Dunlin in spring in SE China I was really amazed. The subspecies there is very rufous on the back and when they were in flocks of 1000s and in flight they were beautiful.

They were definitely my favourite for several weeks in March/April when I could sit at this spot, wait and have them land a few metres away from me. Fantastic.

A wonderful video that shows how clever these little birds are . Amazing to watch them eating , grooming and as for the incoming flock you filmed -- spectacular ! One year will make a trip just to to watch such and possibly do a bit of mud larking :) I never knew such birds were not governed by night and day .Is this all sea birds or what .Thinking of the many indigenous Canada Geese which I actually like..( as you know ) 👍Thanks Nick and have a great week ...

Not all waterbirds but particularly those ones that rely on finding their food on tidal flats. If you think about it they cannot feed when the tide is in (ok, sometimes they feed on fields, inland pools etc). The wealth of food within the mud is incredible. I grabbed a handful of mud when I was filming my Oystercatcher video and was amazed to find that it was almost entirely worms and shellfish, very little mud in my hand at all! It's like a supermarket where the shelves are stocked at random times and everything is free. We would all find ourselves living our lives by their schedule regardless of what time they decided to open.

@@BirdingwithNick Oh what a fabulous reply Nick .Gulls love all night opening but profit from being omnivores ...You are the expert but it was only when I started filming I noted how birds stood facing the wind , or the sun and many here seem to stand in a formation ..Whatever their size they amazing and always look good ..( unless there has been an oil spill .)
