From what Russ and John said, they were focusing on the speed of the attack, as compared to being able to contact and direct the ball. I would've wanted to ask, "what's more important from a long-term athlete development standpoint: hitting a faster tempo ball, or being able to get the ball past the block and still put some pace on it?" Training hitters to hit faster tempo balls could lead to faulty arms or one-shot wonder players. They become predictable in the end, thus dig/block-able.

Response to Lloren's comment: I prefer speed. Speed has two main advantages. It nearly always results in one or zero blockers, and the defending team has very little time to read and react to the attack. This translates into more points and ultimately more wins.

"Time" - how long does it take a blocker commit a block: reading, footwork, jump, .... and all of that move from A to B. My definition of a Quick Attack is hits (contact, dunk, dump) the ball on the way up. Blocking a quick attack, basically, the hitter act and blockers react take time, frequently, not enough "time". Hitting a slide is a quick attack in the right side, men volleyball don't do slide but do quick. When women volleyball quick attack from the back of the setter (right side) they hit the ball on the way up. In that million of a second, that why the blocker not quick enough to block. Another point that John stated the fact that jump 1 foot, or 2 feet doesn't make any different in term of speed, however, the only different is the high. But so many teach to do one foot jump that change the whole new hitting pattern. It has the same result, if the hitter jump 2 foot to the side way along the ball, with high, and contact the ball on the way up that will be more effective than sett the ball low. and what if quick attack everywhere, any time; away from the net, high; that BYU men volleyball Mr. "Sander" did that!!! FIVB 2014 USA Women Volleyball has change to "quick attack" - and other things - the result totally different, so as, Penn State women volleyball 2014 to paralyze BYU blocking team. Kira and Russ (student and teacher) apply the same strategy. Congratulation!
