Can’t believe he won 3 MVP’S IN A ROW😱

Not only that... from 1981 -1988 if he didn't get #1 in MVP votes, he got 2nd. Seriously. From his second NBA year he placed first or 2nd in MVP voting: He finished 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, and 2nd.

One reason the defense looks soft on Bird in so many of those last minute shots is Bird shot 90% from the line. If you fouled him the game was pretty much lost.

The one thing everyone mentions is Bird's lack of athleticism. He WAS athletic, though - he just wasn't big time, show time flashy athletic. He didn't have lightning speed or 40 inch hops. But here's the thing: The guys who DID couldn't guard him - or get around him. He made fools of them on offense, he made fools of them on defense. He was so smart, he used the athleticism he DID have to outplay and out-hustle the best players in the game. There's a reason the most elite players in history bow down to this guy. Pat Riley was famously asked who he would want to take the final shot of a game. His answer: if the game was on the line, Michael Jordan. If his LIFE was on the line, Larry Bird. Doesn't get much clearer than that.

He made 3 All-Defense 2nd teams when he was younger and in better health, and in that era that really meant something. The youngsters will regurgitate the "played against plumbers" nonsense, but some names of some of those "plumbers" on those teams were Sidney Moncrief, Jack Sikma, Michael Cooper, Tree Rollins, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Those 80s plumbers were some legendary defenders.

The 3 MVPs in the row isn't even the whole story there. Rookie of the Year voting he received all but three votes. He was 4th in voting for MVP his rookie year. (Jabbar won) The next three years he was 2nd in MVP votes, then won it for three years (84, 85, 86, then 3rd, then 2nd. Between 1980-88 he received over 66% of all available votes.

I was a 13 year old Center and co captain of my schools girls team and I watched all of the 1985 and 1986 games that I could. 1985/86 Celtics are still the best team I've ever seen. I lived about 25 minutes north of Boston and when games came on we would turn on the tv and turn the volume down and then we would put on the radio so we could hear Johnny Most as commentator for the game. Some of my best childhood memories. Been many years since I played basketball but I did love the shit out of it. Broke all of my fingers playing and man, the arthritis I deal with today because of that is awful so I can't imagine the pain Larry was in playing with a back so broken for all those years. Fun to see you guys 'discover' a legend from my childhood. He was my Jordan. PS-the clip at 13:15 where he stole the inbound pass, the guy you hear describing it all was Johnny Most. Man about had a coronary several times calling Celtics games when Bird did some seemingly impossible thing.

Celtics & Sixers had a bunch of brutal battles back in the day. Both the teams and fans all hated each other, but respected the competition. When Sixers beat the Celtics to go play Lakers in the finals one year, the Celtics fans first started chanting "Beat LA, Beat LA", respect.

Bird was one of the most feared monsters on the court in a league of the most talent-rich era across the board. That 80's Celtics team was the mid-90's Jordan Bulls in their day and before that, Jordan, even with Pippen and Phil Jackson, could never beat Bird's Celtics in the playoffs. They always got beat even after Bird's back was debilitated. It's a shame that Bird doesn't come up when we have the GOAT conversation, although I feel more and more people of this generation are discovering how great he was in his era, but he rightfully belongs in there every time. It was Bird and Magic who quite literally saved the entire NBA too.

Julius Erving "he was born to play basketball" That's all you need to know. Dr J and Jordan awesome to watch, Magic so many guys who are great to watch, have style... But Bird even with a dodgy shooting hand and a body that he drove into the ground just made too many nearly impossible things look so easy.. it COULD be...that of anyone was born player it was Bird...man was a freak, and old school attitude. Bad ass. I think considering he played his whole career with the body issues he did was pretty athletic considering, I think it's a testimony to how determined he was.

Bros, I was there in the Boston Garden, row four for much of the Bird era. Even as kids, we knew we were witnessing something special. These highlights were every game. My brother and I still talk about it. Not just Larry and the other white players. The entire Celtics team looked like they just got done at the factory. Nobody looked athletic. But they played like the Harlem Globetrotters. Every night we'd see bird talking to an opponent, pointing to a spot on the floor. We'd be like "he's tellin' him where he's going. Larry would taunt players, coaches...and back it all up. Just a great player and a great team.

Since you asked - watching the NBA back then you followed both teams (Celtics/Lakers) closely so you could enjoy the inevitable Lakers/Celtics 7 game series. That was the epitome of basketball. Everyone knows how the playoffs are basketball at another level than the regular season and the finals a level above that. Well, a Lakers/Celtics finals were two more levels above any other finals and what most NBA fans lived/died for. Basketball in it's most glorious form. The way the two teams went at each other was intense. The Lakers showtime vs the Celtics inside game was a match-up made in basketball heaven. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were the headliners in an all-star lineup and the fans were the ultimate victors. Great times. Thanks for the flashback.

You missed the point when you said he played no D on Bird. The point was Bird told Isiah that Benson had no shot. Bird knew he couldn't play good D and he knew he was busting him for the game winner. He said that mess to Isiah with Benson standing right there. Basically told Benson he's crap . Cold.

Winning MVP 3 years in a row is cool, but Larry was in top 3 map voting from I think 80 or 81 until 88! That really tells the story!

I remember that game and I believe Bobby Jones was the white guy that bird was referring to Bobby Jones ended up making the Hall of Fame and is considered one of the best small forward defenders in the history of the game so it's kind of funny that he mentioned him.

When Bird played college no one knew him because you didn't have a SportsCenter back then. I saw his scoring average and always thought he was black until I saw him in the tournament that year. Can you imagine not knowing someone with that much talent today? Thank god for the internet.

The game has changed since he played, but if he played today he'd score 50 a game. The guy should be considered a top 5 if not a top 3 player.

That player Kent Benson who Bird shot over on the game winner versus the Pistons was a guy had a beef with going back to college when Bird was at Indiana University…Bird was here for a short time before he went to Indiana State…Bird recounted in his autobiography that Benson was not nice to him then and BIRD NEVER FORGOT…he actually fed MCHALE the ball over and over when Benson was guarding MCHALE and MCHALE dumped 58 points that night…LESSON..NEVER UPSET BIRD HE CARRIED THOSE GRUDGES!

Larry joined the Celtics in 79, McHale didn't get there til 1980. Bird went up against many great players, Dominique Wilkins, Dr. J, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Isaiah Thomas, Jordan and Pippen. The Celtics with Larry Bird swept Jordans Bulls twice in the finals.

During the 1985 offseason, Bird injured his back shoveling crushed rock to create a driveway at his mother's house. At least partially as a result of this, he experienced back problems for the remainder of his career. By the 1990s, Bird “had lost the structural stability of his spine,” according to his orthopedic therapist, Dan Dyrek. “It would slip into abnormal positions to try and lock itself to get an artificial stability.” The pain for the Celtics star was intense. Dyrek compares his spinal issues to “getting your finger stuck in a door, and somebody’s still pushing on the door Bird bent it trying to field a line drive during a softball game and never straightened the finger again Double Achilles surgery early in 1988-89 season spelled doom; Bird-led Celts had advanced at least to East Finals every year but one from 1980-88, never to return After leading the Celtics to a 29-5 start to the 1990-91 season, Bird missed 22 games due to a compressed nerve root in his back, a condition that eventually led to his retirement. He had off-season surgery to remove a disc from his back, but his back problems continued and he missed 37 games during the 1991-92 season

Chocolate Thunder was Daryll Dawkins, if I recall, correctly. Used to go through backboards like they were living room windows.
