Hi all, okay, so I got a score of 125 on DET, my first time taking it, and I believe I can share some valuable tips that helped me (these are not official tips, just some strategies that helped me). - I think the key for this exam is to be as relaxed as possible. Try to take the practice exam multiple times, even if the questions start getting repetitive. It is the best way to get yourself familiar with the test format. - I would suggest going on Google and selecting a random picture and then set your timer for about 2 minutes and start describing the picture. - Also, for the section with given random prompts, I suggest googling random themes to talk about, setting your timer and talking about the prompt/question for about two-three minutes. Or if you need to write a mini essay on some question, then set your timer for about 4 minutes and start typing immediately. This way you will become more comfortable on the actual exam, trust me.. Anyways, they were helpful to me, and hopefully they might help someone else! feel free to comment
Happy Birthday Duolingo! Thank you for making my dream of studying come true, without you I wouldn’t be able to apply to colleges and universities during covid lockdowns. Wishing you all the best and always believe in your bright future!
*Top tips below* that I have collected to help all of you guys: [Edit 1: You can ask me whatever you want in the replies, today I received my scores :)! ] 1) *Type the statement that you hear* : The accents that you hear are American, if you’re not familiar with this accent then start watching American TV and film or listening to an American podcast. 2) *Record yourself saying a given statement* : Record yourself saying short sentences and listening back to them to see if you can improve your pronunciation. You can check online for the specific pronunciation of words you are practicing to make sure they are correct. 3) *Speak the English word for each image* : *DO NOT* say "This is a... " but prefer to say only the word e.g. "Penguin". This section is asking you for the word, not for your speaking capabilities. And, record yourself saying short sentences and listening back to them to see if you can improve your pronunciation. You can check online for the specific pronunciation of words you are practicing to make sure they are correct. 4) *Write 1 sentence about the given image* : The more you are able to write in the short amount of time given, the higher mark you would receive. 5) *Prepare to speak for a given picture for 3 minutes* : *First* , try to talk generally on what you see e.g. "In this picture I can see a lady on a bench". *Second* , be more specific, using the "on the right/ on the left/ at the bottom" e.g. "Next to her, on the right, I can see... " *Third* , try to guess e.g. "I can see a restaurant behind her, so probably she is waiting for her date" *Final* , you can talk about your emotions that have been created by the picture e.g. "This picture makes me feel peaceful because... " I hope I helped you all. Good luck!!
@@EugeniuCeban85 Well it depends. You need to have a structure like "The given statement discusses..." or "It is said that...". You should include words like "in my opinion", "in addition", "however" etc..
I did the Duolingo English test recently and got a score of 135. Prior to taking the test, I practiced three times on the practice tests, scoring 115-135, 115-130 and 120-130. This is just to say that the scoring estimate of the practice test might end up being somewhat off from your actual test score - in this case to my favour, but it could probably also overestimate your score. Beyond taking the practice tests, I prepared myself for the test by watching English-speaking movies and reading English novels. I would practice pronouncing words and also write down small analyses of the stories. In total I prepared for ~1 week.
I practiced 3 times, and i got around 110-150 in almost every test. I took the actual test 3 days ago and I got my results today. My score is 140/160. Just go for it. Main tips: - Never submit anything, always go over everything - Try to be as quick as you can so you have time to review - what you say doesn’t really matter as long as you are staying relevant to the topic (content), but how you say it does matter (how you express yourself and formulate sentences) -If you’re not sure of a certain word don’t try to guess it, only pick the ones you know are real 100%
Yepper pepper yeah i think on the website it says that you get it in 5 days because of the pandemic, not AFTER 5 days. So you’ll get it in min. 2 days and max. 5 days
This is the first time I see a video about the test and as always, time and spontaneous problems presented during the examination could be your biggest challenge.
Great video! Super helpful. I did the practice test once and had an estimated score of 130-145. I took the actual test 5 days ago and just received my results: 135. Very happy. I'm sure this video helped my a lot to obtain this score!
@@youngdu33de I'd say mediocre. Writing was okay but at first I thought I said a lot of weird stuff when I had to talk for 3 minutes straight about one subject haha.
Hey I took test twice but every time they send me email of test could not be certified because you looked away from the screen. But I was only on screen, camera and keyboard, Please help me
This was super helpful, this was my first video I watched on this topic, probably also my last one. This is all I needed. Great video, super informative and to the point, just couldn't be any better. Thanks. Good luck.
Thank you very much, it is actually the best test due to COVID-19... I am going to take this test instead of IELTS, because all centers are closed. So very informative. Good Luck
Thank you for the video! I've used it to help my students prepare for this test. Although I have a lot of experience with IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, CAE etc. I am pretty exited to learn about this innovative testing method. It is not as academic as the other tests and there is no need to write an essay, describe a graph or write a report but it still requires you to be good at organizing your speech, developing your arguments, thinking on your feet...
The predicted scores are highly accurate. My predicted ranges were 130-145 and 135-145 whenever I gave the test. In the actual test, I got 135. This video is very much helpful and I've received my results today(5 days after I gave the actual test) due to the spike in the number of people taking the test.
Thanks for this video!! Really helpful in this pandemic time of covid that I can't take any TOEFL test but gladly the US school I'm applying tells me to take the duolingo test for substitute. Will come back after I get my result and good luck to everyone as well as myself :))
Ok I'm back so the actual test is actually really challenging due to time pressure, but this system ensures that whether a person has enough ability or not towards English
When I took practice test I get 110~140 this score range and then in Acura test my result just arrived which was 120. So I suggest take much practice test as possible so you get used to the time pressure then you'll be able to get the score within the range
@@danielfernandez6016 its actually useless to "study" because rather than knowledge it actually just test your foundations. Basically following the video will get you like 100 above , things like writing or whatsoever open enDed question, have it simple first, then try to expand little by little
@@MegaFW thank you so much! Then just doing the practice test or some other exercise can help? And the topics are usually very difficult to talk about? Thank you so much in advance
Thank you very much for helping out with preparation! This video is very useful! I'm jealous that English is not my native language, but people like you make it possible to learn this beautifull and comparatively difficult language!
i hate that everytime im doing a practice test my family interrupts me even tho i previously tell them i am gonna be busy in a test for at least 30 min. istg if they interrupt me in the real one i’m gonna cry my eyes out.
Duolingo English Test is the way to go. It allows equal opportunity for all to enter college. It is diverse and allows you to think wide. It is a great test to be done. Thank you, Duolingo I am happy to be a part of what you offer. Happy 5th birthday. Michelle J. Stephens
Thanks a lot for the thorough and beneficial video. I'm trying to do the test next week and now have more confidence after watching your video. I also should say, I'm really proud of the young generation of my country. Good job man, Damet garm :)
Many thanks for the video. It’s the second video I watch about Duolingo exam. Yours is Super valuable. I especially liked the part when you showed common types of questions with the exam. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Makes the structure clearer and understandable.
Great job. I have started training a student to take the Duolingo test this year, and I was kind of in the dark until I watched this video. Really good.
I took the test on 20/4 and got the results on 23/4. I managed to score 135(ielts academic 8 equivalent). The duration is 60 mins. There is no negative marks. I thought I did pretty ok and was scared that I would score less than 120(my college wanted me to score more than 125+ for admission). I felt like I messed up the speaking part. D.E.T doesn't give you breakdown of score. So, there is no real way of knowing which part you did well. I did take 5 to 6 practice test before the actual test. None of the questions from practice test made it to the actual test.
Hi, please how long did it take for your questions to load? I tried the test today and for about 45 minutes, the tests questions did not load. I had to log out.
@@faithgbadamosi8067 the loading time was normal. Like 5 to 10 secs. Although my screen got stuck in loading page for 2 mins and I had no clue what to do. This was during the middle of the exam. Finally I got the next question page after 2 mins.
@@QQQuirky mine didn't load after 30 minutes on different occasions. I have sent a mail to the duolingo team. I guess they are having network glitch due to the high demand for their test
Amazing video! Very well explained especially about how to use the time on the actual test. Thank you very much for all the small details you've mentioned!
I have to take this test because my TOEFL test got rescheduled for July 10th!! The application deadlines for unis will be over by then... thank you for the video!!
bhagyashri desai I commented again 2 days ago, just scroll down and you should find it. I shared my score and some tips in the replies to that comment :)
Hey guys, I took the test two weeks ago and my score was 115. When I did the practical test (many and many times) my range was about 105-140. I'm open to answear any question about the real test, it's not that hard, it's just quick. Also, this video was very helpful..thanks a lot :)
If someone is not as fluent in speaking as of in writing, Needed your suggestion how can it be improved or is it even necessary to be very fluent in speaking.
Thank you for the video. It was really helpful. I scored 130/160 in the actual test. The university requirement was 110/160, so I am very happy with the results. 🥂
My result is out and I scored 130 overall and came here just to thank you for the support. on usual scale in practice tests i used to get in between 110-140... just calm yourself and do more mocks from duolingo practice test. itll be fine.
@@bouchraben7651 you can take test as many times as you need if you did not get required score. Only limitation is that you can only take exam twice during 30day period.... Everytime you take the test, you should pay the fee.... Kudos; prepare well dear!
@@vvb1414 could you please tell me about your experience. The test, was it difficult compared to the sample test? And what type of qsts did you in the speaking and writing part? I will be so grateful to you if you could answer my questions. Thanks in advance
@@bouchraben7651 The difficulty level of questions is easy. What makes it look difficult is the unexpected questions.just after you r done with one type of question, you r followed by different question. As said in this video questions are mixed. More practice = easy examday. Writing is almost the same in comparison to practice from duolingo test. You will see images that you normally see in daily life. Only thing required is spontaneously answering ability. In writing section, fill in the letters, I was stunned at first glance but slowly within the time, when I analysed and re-read the sentences quickly, answers strike my mind thenitself. Speaking is also easy, no worries at all. Just try to maintain the flow and coherence. Test is quite easy if you undergo 1 hour practice everyday till you take the actual exam. One more tip if you wish to take. Actual exam consists of lots of questions and seem to be longer than usual. Be patient and answer all qns that come on your way. Prepare well. Hope you get140+.....
@white knight im not sure about the due dates to submit the duolingo test, but some universities are still accept Duolingo as an English Proficiency Test, you can view those information on the university’s website
Today, I can not describe how delightful moments I have, because I got my duolingo results that is 125. Now I can apply to the university where I want to move.
I gave the test.. thought my score would be around 110-120 cause I am not that good in English and also I messed up dictation and fill in blanks. I know nothing of grammar or anything just used to watch lots of movies. . But I got 140/160 . I am more surprised than anything. I thought the max I would be able to get was 120. So, practice and just go for it.
I attempted the test twice and it was interrupted both times telling that the supervisor found problem with my test. Please please also tell the students the technical settings of the browser as well. They later told me that there should be no popups or extensions. I don't remember they told it before the test or any other person told that.I dont know how to make sure that the settings are correct. pLEASE gUIDE

That was a really useful video... Thanks. As I saw in your video you've gain 135 in duolingo, may I ask: 1- what was your estimated score in the test before the real test? 2- And being so fluent, I expected you something like 150 or 160, is that so hard in real test?
@@ezapplyinternational7017 Thanks for your answer. I want 125 and the other day I achieved 105-150 in practice test... I hope I can achieve it... Wish me luck!!! :)

Thank you and really appreciate your time and patience. Best, Tim
hello there!!! I am really thankful of you about all the information you provide about the test... And let me know if you are a Persian (Farsi) speaker!
Hey bro, if I buy a second English test the score of the first one will stay there? So i can send the best score test, or the first one delete when I buy the second one?
Just got my tests scores and got 150 on my first attempt. What I have to say is that there is really no "tips and tricks" to raise your score. This test will actually reflect your english level. One thing though that you can do is practice the Production questions with random themes only to make you comfortable on test day. Other than that, I agree with the guy on the video about speaking and writing as much as time allows.
Hi, and thank you for all those valuable information. My question is: if the score that we took at mock exams which in Duolingo English website is reflected what we will get at the real exam?
Thankyou so much for this video ! I'm preparing myself to do this test but I'm insecure because English isn't my mother's tongue. Could you give me some types about writing ? For me is the worst part, and the anxiety doesn't help rs
You could think about a typical way of starting, something like "while others may not I agree, I believe that ..." Perhaps having a ready made idea for how you could start could help you with the anxiety of looking at the blank box and thinking about how to start. Also, Try to remember that for any statement you make you could add 2 reasons why you believe that. Firstly..., Secondly... this will help you structure your writing and develop your argument. What do you think?
really amazing and very helpful video. I just want to ask that how to improve writing whether it is for picture or any sentence given in a good and proper way to score more? i got confuse at them. And other thing is that while practicing sample test i got 105/150 is it good cause im wondering if the exam also as same as sample test? plz guide
I am in the process of applying for residency in the UK, and my Englidh proficiency is required. I believe that taking a Duolingo test is the way to go
Y’all the actual test is soooo much harder than the practice test damn edit: please read the replies before asking questions!!! edit: templates and more advice in the replies
@@mirzatodorovac6236 Some of the questions were sooo weird.. I had to talk about the safety regulations for construction workers for example xD Also the photos were you have to name the object get a little more abstract. I'd say it's about 30% harder and I always got 125-160 points in the practice test.
@@TheMissZuckie thank you for this short update... one more question, section with words? Was it hard? I'm in similar situation like you, because I was ready to take TOEFL, but with all this situation there is now way to pull that on time..
@Mirza Todorovac ehh, the first two were pretty easy however the last two were a little tricky. I'd say they are about the same difficulty level as the slightly more difficult ones you get in the practice tests. Just enter as many words as you know and If you don't know a word just leave it blank. Like the dude said, if the questions get harder you are doing well. Also, it seems like they don't really care about WHAT you say during the speaking parts only HOW you say it. (I got 140/160, that's 118/120= on the TOEFL scale, and I thought I did super bad because the things I said during the speaking part were ... not so.. inspiring) So I suggest you make yourself a little template you can memorize. For example, when they ask for your opinion, you could say, "The statement discusses (insert general topic of the statement). In my opinion (this or that) is better and there are several reasons why I think so. The first one is ...... In addition...... Lastly..." That also works for the writing parts. You don't have to use fancy words; it's more important that you get your point across clearly. It's also okay if you don't know a term for an object. For example, they showed me an eggplant, and I forgot the word for it, so I just said "vegetable". I also forgot the name for "button-down shirt" so I said "clothing". If you don't know the word, just use a general description.
I was blocked five or six months ago and they said it's not your voice, even though I filmed myself and sent it to them, my problem has not been solved yet. Duolingo mistakenly blocked people.
Awesome video! You help me really for preparing this mini exam. Do you have any other advice to prepare myself for the real test, except to try always the free 15 minute test?

I really dissapointed with duolingo english test. If only we can take another test, i'm pretty sure NO ONE will ever choose duolingo🙄. They make everything really difficult for the test takers. I try to do the test 5 TIMES.. 1 of my experience , i faced the conditions where i'm almost CLOSE to finish, but my connections lost, and they only give 10 seconds which really is a short time to reconnect then after that my test was considered as invalid test and i need to retake! wtf.. 2-4 times the test screen shows only a blank page. it's true it is not their fault, i know my internet was not good. But as we know, we can't go outside to find good wifi connection right?? and where can we find that, at the cafe? restaurant? how is that possible to do the test in public area. ALSO, they seems like they are really proud of the statement "you can get your test result within 2 days bblahblablah covid become 5 days". BUT now what?? my test was not certified because i unconciously looked away from the screen???? and even though i can appeal my test, but it took up to 5 days more!! with no guarantee that my test will be certified. SOO if the conditions after i appeal my test result still not certified. i need to do the test again and they need extra time to check it again so in total we need 15 days just for get the test result! amazing. i really recommend this test wow 😱
