John Taylor is realy underraited as a bass player. I had a friend who was only into punk and metal music, He herd me listening to DD one day and was impressed with Johns tallent
WHY OH WHY was this awesome song by Duran Duran never released as a single? It would've been a huge hit just like all the other hit singles from the "Rio" album, and I'm sure a lot of Duran Duran fans will agree with that too. Plus Andy Hamilton's performance in this was great too, just like all his saxophone playing in "Rio" and "Careless Whisper" as well as his playing with Duran Duran on their 1984 American tour. As for John Taylor's bass playing in this song, it completely blew me away!! John Taylor is definitely one of the greatest bass players in the music business.
It has been a perennial club hit for decades. It ALWAYS gets people up and moving! I think that was its purpose. John should be proud of this one, it showed his Chic inspired funk-slap-base better than any other Duran Duran song. This fker is REAL dance music!
@@primetime591 - I remember a KROQ DJ playing this instead of "Save a Prayer" (He said by mistake.). I actually like(d) this song better and it should have been a A-side.
If you're curious as to who John's greatest bass guitar inspiration is, just go back and listen to CHIC's Greatest Hits. John and the band loved Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of CHIC. They became great friends and were also creative partners. Mr. Edwards has influenced countless numbers of bass players, myself included.😀❤ May he R.I.P.🙏
I would love to see more of Rogers drum play. in my view he is REALLY underrated as drummer. I once read - don´t know if it´s true - he was the first one who mixed the conventional drums with the (then-)hexagonal electronical drums (I´ll never forget and always love as a kid of the 80ies) - This song is one great example of that mixture.
I can't explain to millennials the finest glamour and style of the first half 80's music bands, neither our feelings. I've never seen that elegance anymore, unfortunately. Believe me, I'm not an old mad shit, now music men are often angry, they watch the camera just like an enemy, made strange menacing movements with their hands, a few smiles. I thought it would have lasted forever, then clothes started darkening, it came rap and now trap.
Luv it luv it 🎉🎉🎉wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow Duran Duran best band on planet earth 🌎🌍🌎 been a die hard Duranie since 1981 now 2024 still era luv um 🎉🎉🎉
I used to hear this tune on family road trips all the time as a kid, as my parents had it on a mix tape they'd play in the car... I always assumed it was a big hit like "The Reflex" or "Hungry Like the Wolf", but no, just another killer Duran Duran album track!
And wrote their own songs. Maybe because they meet, know their instruments (in fact: all not good but outstanding musicians) - played in small venues for almost no money - before they were discovered. Nowaday, pretty faces got casted - who cares if they can sing or play any instrument - doesn´t matter at all...
God genius poetry celebrating nature- 5 awesome musicians in poetic analogy perfection. But (Nigel) John Taylor's bass just kills you. We got SO SPOILED. Erudite, insightful lyrics- boyish playfulness. F me thrice on Sunday. Duran Duran was awesome!
Bel Mac, I completely agree with you. Andy Hamilton should definitely be recognised as an official member of Duran Duran. His performances during Duran Duran's 1984 USA tour were fantastic. As for his performance in this concert, I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed John Taylor's bass playing and Simon Le Bon's singing.
If Andy Hamilton stay as their sixth members, the group would never broken up because Andy Hamilton is quite bit older than Simon and the rest of those young guys plus he would make sure those kids would behave and keep their nose clean.
The 12” mix version is a excellent. It’s available for purchase in ITunes. This is one of my fave DD tunes. I agree with others on here that it should’ve been released as a single.
So in love with them in the 80s. I recognize all the guys expect who it the brown haired guy in white and black singing back up vocals. This and many other songs stand the test of time
Heather Moultrup, the guy singing backing vocals while playing the cowbell and jumping up and down is Andy Hamilton. He played the saxophone on both the "Rio" and the "7 & The Ragged Tiger" albums plus the saxophone on "Careless Whisper" by George Michael. He also toured with Duran Duran on their massive 1984 American tour, and his saxophone playing during those performances were fantastic. I'm glad you love Duran Duran as much as I do.
A great b -side song they where just as good as the ones they released. love Duran Duran most underrated group of my generation 40plus years in the business and still going strong.
Tenor777, my thoughts echo yours. I wish I was there too dancing to "Hold Back The Rain" and all the other beautiful songs Duran Duran performed at this fantastic concert. As for John Taylor and his powerhouse bass playing, he has to be one of the best bass guitarists in the world.
PENNY BOULTON, good on you for being there and I bet you were having one of the best times of your life at that awesome concert. If I was there, I would've been on an all-time high simply because Duran Duran are one of my all-time favourite pop groups and "Hold Back The Rain" is one song I just can't get enough of.
@@adamhepburn9701 Totally agreed (sorry for the 3 year response...never received a notification!) The band was tight and very professional from the very beginning. And I was especially impressed with Andy Taylors singing those last few seconds of the song. It's too bad he never got the chance to sing lead more (unless it was on deeper cuts that I'm not familiar with)
I remember my parents who were very up to date musically. .. from Elvis, Beatles (who the saw live in the cavern, Liverpool in the 60s) sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, rainbow even the police.they travelled long distances for me and my friends to be able to experience the excitement of screaming until I lost my voice at all the DD concerts I attended. ... but because they where a different generation they thought their music was better than mine! its only natural for us to think that ours was (is ) better than the before and after!
haro82 I heard in an interview JT say it was a bitch to play live because of double cords or something like that. I think this is truly my favorite DD song. 😁
Lori Harding, I remember coming across a similar story too. John Taylor stated in an interview that when Duran Duran played "Hold Back The Rain" live, he could play the bass normally during the first and second verses with his fingers but would quickly have to use a pick when Duran Duran played the chorus!! In this performance of "Hold Back The Rain" John Taylor seems to have everything under control, but of course only John Taylor himself would know better than anyone else how this is done.
Roger Taylor is BANG ON pardon the pun with that click track and sequenced keyboard part with those headphone, always been a great drummer. Then they're all great musician in this band shame I found Nick is a huge Crowley fan :(
JT is the MASTER of the BASS! This song is about JT’s coke increasingly horrible drink and coke problems at the time. He’s been sober for decades now 🥰🥰🥰 Although, Simon looks cooked off his ass here. 🤪🤪 Looking again, they all do!!
I like the goofball on the left banging on the drum with one drumstick. You know he’s just hoping to score with anything left over after the real band picks all the girls
