SHOT IN HIGH DEFINITION 4K!!
141 years ago, the mountains of San Juan & La Plata County, Colorado were graced with a 45-mile railroad that stretches from Durango to the mining town of Silverton. Today, that lonesome whistle can still be heard howling through the Animas River Valley. Join us as we take a “trip to yesterday”, with all the sights and sounds that have generated millions of tourist since 1882. This railroad needs no introduction. Enjoy the ride behind America’s Railroad: the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Very well done and the editing was first class. Loved to see all 3 engines taking part in different tasks going up and down that gorgeous canyon. The views of the Animas River Valley were amazing! Thanks for doing this film; I know it's not the only one but it is a current one and that's good too because you showed the diesel engines and not too many of us knew they were running trains up there with diesel power. Progress is inevitable and welcome when well done. Cheers.

Но именно такой путь на паровозе интересен людям, помнящим свое прошлое❤

I rode the steam train round-trip on the 4th of July this year, and it was an otherworldly experience. The scenery and the sounds of nature and the train are amazing.

The D&S bought 4 retired road diesel engines from the White Pass and Yukon Railroad in Alaska. Both lines are narrow gauge and so when a narrow gauge engine comes on the market, its subject to just being scooped up "because." The D&S bought the diesels for general yard work and for work trains, but then the Public Relations and Operations Dept's concluded they were much cheaper to operate than the steamers, and if used on a passenger train, the lower operating costs could be passed along to train riders / customers. So they have been assigning them to the 8:15 trains to Silverton, and are able to reduce a ticket price by $10 per rider. For a family of 4 (husband, wife and 2 kids) there's a savings of $40 per family. Some people want to ride in a train pulled by a steamer, but to others its not a big deal. The 9:00 train to Silverton remains steamer-pulled, as does the shorter trip to Cascade Canyon. The diesels are still used for work trains and for general yard use.

At the 34:10 point of the video, the 2nd engine on the morning trip is returning on its own back to Durango. On the way up to Silverton, its nearly all uphill, with some steeper grades, so the 9:00 train almost always requires two engines. The return trip, being all downhill, doesn't require the 2nd engine, so it returns to home base on its own. The 8:15 (early) train, which is pulled by diesels, does not uncouple its 2nd engine, but uses it for additional "dynamic braking" to retard the loaded train cars on the (now) downhill grades.

Great stuff! Im assuming for the shot on the high line of the train returning you had to walk along the tracks, right? I’m going out there in the fall and wanting to get that same shot

The D&S runs some "photographer specials" throughout the year where the trains stop at some specific, picturesque locations, drops off a number of photogs, then backs up or pulls forward as required, the photogs get their video or still pics on the "run past", then the train picks them up and goes to the next picturesque site. On the photographer specials the locomotive crew readjusts the waste oil delivery mixtures to give the illusion that they're old time steamers still running on coal. Under normal conditions, there's very little smoke coming out of the stacks. It is possible that a few / some of the shots may have been from stock footage from the photog specials. Or not.
