I railfanned K-37 493 on Monday August 30th, its first run with Rio Grande lettering for an upcoming railfan event that I was part of. The video also shows K-28 473 and ALCO diesel 107 and roundhouse tour and turn table footage.
The Colorado terrain along with those green and yellow WP&Y Alcos make me think I'm looking at a narrow gauge line somewhere in Brazil. I really enjoy your work!
493 sure does walk a lot on the rails. It shimmies back and forth quite frequently. Surely the crews can feel that much sway in the locomotive. Is this due to it being so large? Are the outside counter balances out of alignment? Or are the D&S rails showing their age that badly?
The track on the D&S is in pretty bad shape. Multiple trains per day for years has really taken a toll on the ROW. The RR does minimal track repairs because shutting down for maintenance would cost them too much. I think they will just keep on running until there is a derailment and they are forced to do something about the track.
493 should be nicknamed "The Holy Terror of the D&S" I was just thinking myself that it sure hunts the rail a lot. I wonder how the K37 on the C&TS will fare whenever it gets restored.
I assume you are asking why K-28's went to the White Pass and Yukon in the 40's? They were taken by the US Army along with locomotives from all over the country to build the Military highway in Alaska to protect it against an invasions. They did not need them all and that is why 473, 476, and 478 stayed in Durango.
Seen less wobble in an unset jelly. WTF kinda maintenece they do on the tracks? That would NEVER pass inspection in that condition surley, you can see the passengers wobbling about aswell inside the coaches!!
The D&S is all about making money. It is a huge money grabbing tourist trap. They will keep running full trains over shit track until one of them derails.
