Deep in the heart of the San Juan mountains, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs for 45 miles on the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Silverton Branch from Durango to Silverton, Colorado and is one of the most widely known tourist railroads in the world. In late August 2023, I spend 2 and a half days getting video of the railroad's regular train operations, as well as a couple special trains.
For the first part, we will follow the regular trains from Durango to Silverton, with 3 different former Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge 2-8-2 mikados of classes K-36 and K-37 in charge. We will also see an appearance by Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose number 5 at Rockwood on a trip to Cascade Canyon.
In the next part, we will follow the regular trains from Silverton back to Durango, including a few scenes of the world-famous "High Line."
Finally, we will follow the popular "Durango Blues Train" on all 3 nights of the trains' operation in 2023 to Rockwood. With K-28 number 473 at the point, we get the rare opportunity to see steam running at dusk into darkness as several blues bands play on board for the passengers.
So come along, and you'll soon see why this railroad is highly regarded among tourists and railfans alike.

I never get tired of the Durango & Silverton, especially because of the steamers.

Brilliant photography Daniel! The night party train seems a lot of fun. Covid ruined my plans to visit in 2020, I hope to get to Durango next year.

Gosto muito de assistir vídeos de ferrovias como esse, as paisagens cada uma mais linda que a outra, aqui no Brasil tem poucos lugares como estou vendo durante esse vídeo, muito lindo trabalho das filmagens.

Great video. I'd like to see them put a red caboose at the end someday. 😊

480s reading 6 chime sounds pretty sweet

I see 493 isn’t wearing her T&P 3 chime. Sounds a little bit like and looks like a D&RGW 3 chime

Did #480 borrow 2102s whistles because it sounded like a reading 3 chime

It's a Reading 6 chime, owned by a D&S employee.

Boa noite, eu tenho uma curiosidade em saber sobre esses trens passageiros quando está chovendo com vento, parece que eles não são fechados? Não tem vidros como janelas?

Quite a few films made use of the stunning landscapes, eg look out for Jack Elam at the end of "Support Your Local Gunfighter"!

They stopped running them for the season a couple weeks before I was there.

The D&S bought 4 of the 6 DL-535 C-truck diesels that were deemed surplus by the WP&Y. One is set aside to use for parts, and the other three are in the yard in Durango. Though just bought for yard and miscellaneous work on the road, the P.R. dept on the railroad noticed they were much cheaper to run than the steamers, and so got the road to use them for pulling the 8:15 train to Silverton, and gave a $10 per ticket discount to offset the lesser cost of operation. For a 4-person family (man, wife, 2 kids) that's a savings of $40, which can be a real help to those on a budget. The D&S ran 2 of them on a rotating basis back-to-back for daily excursion trips to Silverton all summer with great success, not the least of which was using their dynamic breaking on downhill grades. They were repainted mustard yellow lower halves and burgundy upper halves, which are the respective colors of the road's passenger cars. The WP&Y still has the final 2 DL-535s and there are rumors the D&S "may" be in negotiations to buy them too. Or not. After some teething problems were worked out and some repairs made to the traction motors and gearboxes, the diesels have been good additions to the operations. One thing for sure, they're used for snow plows in the snow season. If they can push snow in the Yukon, pushing snow in Colorado is not that tough an assignment for them. There are some D&S-themed videos on RU-vid that feature the DL-535s, and they're shown to good effect. One thing: as used by the WP&Y, the diesels had 5-trrumpet horns, and this has been reduced by the D&S to three.
