This looks amazing. I was thinking about getting one of these for working on my Atari computers. They are selling on Amazon as the Anesty ZD-915 at a very affordable price.

I have a shed load of scrap circuit boards that I've kept so I can dismantle them being non destructive & I can learn about each & every component & know their function. I tried a hand pump solder remover pen but I really didn't get anywhere & I've seen videos about these desolder stations & I was impressed. I think I might invest in one of these very soon. Thank you for the video, I think you have me sold.🙂👍

The ZD-915 is still going strong four years on, but I'm on my fourth handset now. :) The seals start to go with relentless emptying and cleaning of the glass chamber. It's like Trigger's Broom. :)

I stuck a felt mat from the household sponge to the pump housing, at the output came a hose with silencer to it, is now much quieter

You need to get the feel for when to apply vacuum. Once the pin starts to wiggle free hit the trigger and it should come free easily

This makes total sense, and I started to do exactly that when removing the 24-pin chip. I think I have the hang of it now. :)

How does it suck the solder there is no hole in the tip? Thanks
@ng-iq4kx
@ng-iq4kx 4 года назад
@@lulur1149 They come pre-tinned. Once it heats up and you apply suction the tip opens up

Should really pull my finger out and buy one they look like a great time saver

After desoldering using an iron like this, I usually push on each pin with a jeweler's screwdriver to free it from any residual solder connection. They often stick to the edge of the hole and if you pry you may pull up a trace, particularly on the XE machines. The few extra seconds this takes is worth the peace of mind. Just poke each pin away from the edge it is nearest to, to see that it is free and then remove the chip.

Good advice. if both chips hadn't been completely free to begin with, I would have worried about freeing stuck pins with a screwdriver blade. One of the second DRAM's legs was actually slightly hooked around underneath the board and that's why one end of the chip was slightly hesitant. Otherwise it would have come out as easily as the masked ROM. But for beginners: definitely don't try to yank a chip out unless you know it's already free. Vias attached to the chip legs instead of to the board are not fun... traces hanging like tendrils from the removed chip, etc.

This is a very good option for a tight budget, today you can find the Yihua 948, this desoldering looks more well made. I bought both, I like the 948 a little bit more, spare parts are easy to find. A top throughole desoldering tool cost over Us$500 dollars, plus expensive tips an filters. ZD-915 or Yihua 948 are an excellent option for small repair shops. Best Regards.

Does the zd 915 or 948 work well with lead free solder with massive ground planes
@treadmillrepair754
@treadmillrepair754 2 года назад
@@nathanproudfoot56 Yes if you use a little bit of low melting solder. I have two Hakko one 808 and one FR-301, sometimes I need to use low melting solder for remove the parts. Chip Quik or Fast Chip are low menting solder with Bismuth, meltin point is lower of 100C° degrees, but you can find in ebay Rose's Metal, is a mi of Tin, Lead and Bismuth at ver low price. Best Regards.

I have the cheapy £12 duratool heated pump and it works surprisingly well despite me suspecting it's a fire hazard. Am looking for spare tips

I'm so glad you added the fresh solder near the end of the vid. hehe It only takes that extra minute, and makes life a whole lot easier. I would also recommend holding the PCB vertically, if you can, as it does help a bit when the vacuum isn't working against gravity. (the pump is fairly good, but holding the board vertically also helps with the "jiggle", which helps to free up the solder around each pin, and unblock the vias better. Obviously it's best to put hardly any pressure on the vias when doing that, though.) I also tend to hold the heat on the solder joint for a little bit longer on some multilayer boards or large ground planes. Maybe a maximum of 2-3 seconds, before pulling the trigger. It helps a LOT to try to heat as much of the pin as possible, and get the solder out in one blob. I've seen how much desoldering you've done in the past, so I think you'll love the Duratool. ;) I bought mine about 6 years ago, and it's been great since. But, I'd definitely also recommend to always clean the nozzle / heater with the cleaning wire before switching off... I leave the cleaning wire in as well now, as I had to replace the nozzle twice over the years. I misplaced the cleaning tools for a while, and the nozzle got blocked solid. The new nozzle / heater only costs around £12 to replace, though, which is still a bargain really. (P.S. Not spam. lol - I'm just really glad to see more people trying a proper desoldering station, as it's been one of my best purchases for the workshop.)

There is no hole in the tip, how does it suck in the solder?
@flashjazzcat
@flashjazzcat 4 года назад
The tip ships with the hole plugged with solder. The solder melts right away as soon as you start using it. ;)

It's work good?? Satisfied sir? And sleep mode available in?
@flashjazzcat
@flashjazzcat 8 месяцев назад
Works great, but I've gone through two additional handsets (basically worn out through constant use), the chamber needs regular cleaning (otherwise the nozzle will constantly block), and filters need changing quite frequently. But it was cheap and does the job. No sleep mode.

Does this station have a brushless DC or AC motor?
@flashjazzcat
@flashjazzcat 4 года назад
I really don't know about the pump motor, unfortunately. It's still going strong six months later, though.
