Gentle advice for future videos - Perhaps if you're referring to someone else's video, you could begin yours by briefly summarising the point they made which you're speaking for/against. It took me till halfway through the video to understand what Harley had actually said.

I'm with you mate on flat pedals, with a few caveats: 1. Good quality composite flat pedals with spikes can be had for under $50 (RaceFace, PNW Components, OneUP for example). Alloy will run more of course. 2. I realized that cycling in my running shoes and these pedals with spikes starts to destroy the foam/midsole of the running shoes. So I bought low-profile MTB shoes with harder outsoles and now it's pretty much perfect. I can still walk just fine in these shoes and I feel like they will last ages. 3. Clip-in are obviously better for hard racing, sprinting, going hard uphills, and time trials. But let's face it - how many people are actually doing that?

Whenever anyone discusses flat pedals they always pair them with running shoes or sneakers! If you're serious about flat shoes, then use specific flat cycling shoes. They're stiffer and bite well with the pedals. Best of both worlds.

I actually prefer pedals without any sharp studs. For example MKS Sylvan Touring or MKS RMX (more of a "platform" pedal). I mostly use Xero shoes (barefoot style shoes, i.e. wide and comfortable and no cushion at all besides a thin insole) with very thin and flexible soles, and I can ride efficiently with a lot of power with zero issues.

I disagree. There's solid physics backing the advantages of clip-in shoes. Securing your feet to the pedals undoubtedly offers benefits. While studded flat pedals may allow you to navigate through the bottom of the pedal stroke, they can't match the efficiency or power transmission achievable with clip-ins. Compensating on the downstroke doesn't equate to the same effectiveness. If you are right, you can easily prove your point with a dual sided power meter with pedal stroke analysis or similar. see for yourself. you can use flats for convinience, and i like them too and it aint that serious, but you are on to nothing.

That’s precisely my point, clip in shoes are great for TT’s and racing, but for convenience and simplicity for especially beginner cyclists good quality flat pedals are the way to go for building fitness

@@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE Just get some decent hybrid pedals and get the best of both worlds. a pair of cycling shoes isnt a huge investment really.
@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE

@AngryVegan have you compared the innovations catalyst pedal to a very short length pedal, IMO if you use a small platform flat pedal you might as well switch to clip ins due to less safety, comfort and power transfer ability
@AngryVegan
@AngryVegan 4 месяца назад
@@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE it's not that serious, smaller flats arent unsafe, if you are using flats you arent concerned with the utmost performance anyway and you can ride safely and well with convinience or performance as you like
@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE
@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE 4 месяца назад
Smaller then standard bmx size I would consider unsafe, unless it has serious studdage, high quality flats are a performance shoe and increase the feel of the ride like clip ins, have you personally used a pair of Pedalling Innovations Catalyst Pedal yet?

No need to use backpack. Just put your shoes in a rockbros 14L. Stiff sole carbon shoes are SO helpful for performance that all big name pro riders since at least 1997 ride custom carbon made shoes with a carbon innersole arch support for extra stiffness and foot support. IYKYK. A custom sole is glued to a consumer level upper. Only close inspection in hand can you spot the difference. Literally EVERYTHING in this video you bough/use off my recommendation from the SEO title, phone 14 pro, TCR dura ace to the PI flat pedals BUT..... something is preventing you from going all the way and trying some top tier carbon shoes with spd? Im not sure why you dont want to try that? You got programmed by a flat pedal psyop Im suspecting. When I want to ride fast and hard I use clip ins with stiff shoe. When I dont care about performance and just going shopping etc then flats are just fine. I got my s-works carbon XC shoes for $50. M520 pedals can get for 10$ in good condition. 2:58 -3:13 contradiction needs to be clarified. 'Shoe doesnt need to be stiff..... just get harder soled shoes (stiffer)'.
@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE
@COACH-CARBOHYDRATE 4 месяца назад
Cushion & flex VS hardness & stiffness No contradictions here mate I agree a harder soled shoe with no cushion is better but the large pedal platform creates stiffness

He's crazy, rude, if you research this Durianrider you will find horror stories, he does not have any regard for other people. He called a cancer patient a scammer. Some channels have blocked him, as he's attacking them in the comments. I bought the Catalyst pedals on sale. Not that bad, but compared to other pedals, the price is not bad. I've been using them for years. These are the only pedals I will run. All other pedals are too small. Yest the pedals allow you to use flexible shoes, of course when the shoes get worn out and twist, then that will be an issue, but that's not related to the pedals, but the sole. I would not ride in running shoes, especially mountain biking, as toes are exposed to impact, some shoes are not as stable, and wear out fast.
