Regarding Demonic Counsel: This is not an Intervening "if" clause. The intervening "if" is only a thing for specifically triggered abilities, not spells. This is just the word "if" being used in its usual way in an english sentence. Meaning there's no special rules that apply here, it just checks on resolution. (Not meant to sound condescending, this shit is complicated.)

As per the rules text for Traverse the Ulvenwald: Some delirium abilities that appear on instants and sorceries use the word "instead." These spells have an upgraded effect when they resolve if there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard. They check that number only while they're resolving and don't count themselves, since they aren't in your graveyard yet. You only get the upgraded effect, not both effects.

As the premiere judge in the format, I can comment on a few situations: 1. With The Tale of Tamiyo, you do have to pay for the copies exiled by the chapter IV trigger - they are not free. You're exiling them and casting the copies as a way to prevent recursion. 2. Demonic Counsel - it only checks as part of the spell resolving if you have delirium or not. It doesn't matter what's in your graveyard when you cast it, so you can cast it, and then get cards into your graveyard before the spell resolves in order to turn on the delirium bonus.

I am surprised, with all of the talk of Valgavoth having a really strong Ward ability, that Nowhere to Run wasn't mentioned. 1B, Enchantment, Flash, ETB creature gets -3/-3, creatures your opponent control lose hexproof & ward abilities of those creatures don't trigger.

quick clarification on valgavoth: being able to play cards exiled with him is a static ability on him, so if the opponent does four-for-one themselves to get rid of him and he actually goes away, you won't get any of the stuff that got exiled. card's still an absolute house though

13:30, a note on having a bunch of white mana open; Settle is still at 0 point, and the less often it gets played the easier it is to get people with it.

Regarding 42:15 ish: The copies are in exile, not on the stack, so you need to pay the costs to get them from exile onto the stack. If you're told to copy a spell on the stack, the copies are already on the stack, so there's no need to pay their costs.

I'm pretty sure that the Delrium if clause is mainly checked twice for triggered abilities, where the trigger won't even go on the stack if the condition isn't met and where it does nothing even when it is on the stack but when then the condition isn't met anymore. So, for a Sorcery that just has more lines of text with Delirium, it is only checked on resolution, at least when - as Nelson said - no decisions like targeting or something has to be made in conjunction with the Delirium-dependent text. Not quite sure how it would go with decisions for Delirium-dependent text, it might also be checked twice, when cast and on resolution. But then what happens if you don't have Delirium on cast but have Delirium on resolution?

I'm not a judge but fateful hour cards (like Gather the Townfolk for example) are templated exactly like Demonic Counsel (do an effect, replaced by another effect if the condition is met) and they check on resolution.

I‘d argue you may have missed Ancient Cellarspawn from the commander product. A 3 mana 3/3 with a minor discount on some creatures isnt the greatest thing , but it doming your opponent whenever you „cheat“ on mana with a force or delve or fireblast or evoking fury or any other way makes it worth it in my opinion.

Nelson: The Tale of Tamiyo's use of "copy" is different from something like Fork. In the case of the saga, it says to copy the cards, rather than a Fork effect, which copies a spell.

37:10 Altar only hits opponents. This is one of the very niche bugaboos I have is people thinking the card is better than it is. It's still neat, but it's come up enough it's become a burr in my backside.

I like Demonic Counsel for certain builds of dredge, if you're playing enough of a 4th card type (that isn't creature/land/sorcery to enable delirium) and Haakon + Nameless Inversion + Masked Vandal package

Also I feel that calling "manifest dread" and upgrade to "manifest" is wrong. Manifest is merely a keyword action that puts a card face down into play with that turning face-up option. It doesn't specify where the card comes from, although most of its uses probably apply to the top card of a player's library. (non-library manifest: Ghastly Conscription, Scroll of Fate, and Kozilek, the Broken Reality)

Cynical Loner really scard me at my Prerelease bc I thought my opponents would reanimate their bombs. Luckily, nobody had reanimation except for the one mana black card that you can sac for four. And I killed that lol

Sometimes I think people (on casual tables) should just go forward playing Morph as Disguise, Manifest as Manifest Dread and old werewolves as Daybound/Nightbound. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't hurt, likely isn't broken and would be way more consistent.

55:30 this part was painful to listen to. Serge, "intervening if clauses" don't exist on spells, only in triggered abilities. and they're called "intervening" because the if is part of the same sentence as the trigger condition and the effect (not the beginning of a new paragraph)

Abhorrent Occulus reminds me a lot of Jace Reawakened. Its not something you cast on curve, but when you do cast it, it doesn't eat up all your mana, so zoomer control decks get to hold up their reactive spells while developing a threat. It does fight your delve spells, but its also like maybe second murktide (much worse murktide is still plenty of room for a card to be alright in).

Hey can you go into why you don't think Rooms will come up much? Are the initial effects just not worth the value? A flexible card that you can also pump mana into later seems like a hit for most singleton format, generic design wise. Thanks!

I think it's mostly that the majority are a bit over costed without the extra effect making up for it. Walk in Closet seems pretty cool though as an enchantment version of Crucible of Worlds.

I think you might have missed one on The Mindskinner it's a UUU 10/1 that cant be blocked with when it would deal damage to a player prevent that damage and they mill that mana cards... buuuut if you have a way to say damage cant be prevented it's a UUU 10/1 that cant be blocked and you're gonna duff your opponent for half of their life. edit: just to be clear this should be an honorable mention, since we have so many cheap ways to stop damage from being prevented it can be a neat little synergy

Both can happen. They've also skipped multiple Universes Beyond releases with the intention of covering them at a later date. This is a Standard set, at least those should be covered.
