My grandma passed away when I was 7. I never knew that she played guitar until I saw the guitar in my mom's closet. My mom told me that it was my grandpas that killed himself when my mom was 6. There was only 1 song that my grandma knew how to playe, I never got to here her play but my mom did. This song was dust in the wind. I don't get to touch the guitar but I have my own so I am going to learn how to play this for my moms birthday or mothers day. I think that this song means a lot to my mom because it reminds her of her mom. Thank you for teaching me how to play this it really means a lot to my family. I'm hoping to get to play it on my my granpas guitar.

This was one of my first songs I learned when taking lessons 30 years ago ( just recently picked up playing 8 mos ago) from a classical guitar teacher. I'm usually very good at finger picking. But this particular pattern is soooo simple yet soooo difficult. This is gonna take a lot of practice for me. I personally can't do fingerstyle at all but I watched your video around 4x(only Travis picking parts) and have been practicing for an hour on it and I now have it thank you SM your patience and slow playing is a major help!

Marty, you are a true teacher of the guitar for beginners to even intermediate level. Very few teachers have the patience to slow things down, step-by-step, and then gradually speed things up. You do a great job with that.

True story: Kerry Livgren was at home just doing some finger picking exercises. His wife walked by and stopped and said, I think you have something there! She encouraged him to develop this exercise into a full fledged song, which he did. It became Kansas' biggest song of all. Smart lady, and immensely talented songwriter and guitarist!

I used to play that song back when I took guitar class in high school and after all this time, had it memorized up to the point of the rest of the song. My Mom used to have me play it everytime one of her friends came over and I got burned out on it and had the finger picking down after all this time until the other day when I actually looked at what I was doing and then I lost it, so, thank you for showing it to me again. I want to see the rest of the song's notes so I will be able to play the entire song once again and my Mom will be surprised still after all of these years when I play it for her again. I never learned how to use a pick but did have my fingerpicking down. Now if I could learn how to use a pick like I want, I can learn the guitar again and this time play like I always wanted to.

Hey Marty, there's this really cool song I know how to play by Eddie Vedder. It's called "Guaranteed", and was part of his album he made for the movie "Into The Wild", and it uses the same Travis picking style that you used in this video. I thought it be really cool if you did a tutorial for that song, because I feel like lots of people would enjoy it. And also, great video! :)

I hired an instructor beginning of the year to help me learn more than the same song I've been playing last thirty years. A couple weeks ago he assigned Dust In the Wind for my recital in May. I finally feel like a half way decent intermediate guitarist at 42, after a lifetime of wanting to learn! If it helps anyone, this is what I put in my phone notes (or write down) to play this intro: PICKING PATTERN: A/B, D, G, A, B, D, G (CHORD SHAPE/B STRING ACTION) C: 1, 0, 3, 1 Am: 0, 3, 1, 0 C: 3, 1, 0, 3 Am: 1, 0, 3, 1

THANK YOU!!!! - just on a note, I got the picking and the melody, but I was totally off on the rhythm and even when I went as fast as I could it sounded like a total different thing. It was puzzling me! So, I dedicated my weekend to fix the rhythm and I was only able to do it by using the first few seconds of this video and setting the playback speed to 0.5 and then to 0.75 and playing along 100 times. I noticed my timing was way off by doing that and I was able to fix it! Now my intro sounds very close to the real thing, but my fingers are bleeding hahahah.. Great tip for whoever is learning and having trouble after getting the picking: Slow down the playback time and watch his fingers!

I really really like the way he keeps his pinky out of the way (left hand) when not using it. Most of rhe time you cant cipher whether the pinky is pressing on a string or not. With this guy , you can tell.

Thx. 40+ years of playing. Self taught, my Puck ng and strumming patterns have been all by ear. Now, I have exact lessons I can grasp. Takes me a day of practice, but I get it. Also, I'm now learning actual guitar, opposed to just playing old songs...

I'm a 4 month beginner and have always stayed away from fingerstyle songs because they look difficult but I "picked" up the picking pattern for this in about 10 minutes thanks to your clear and amazing tutorial. I don't ever comment on any RU-vid videos, I think mainly because I spent the last 35 years in the Technology industry, but I was compelled to comment. YOU ARE AWESOME!!! My son and daughters heard me playing Metallica "Nothing Else Matters" and gave me a big complement. I learned it all from your videos. I have been messing with these guitars since high school. To everyone who has problems with the rythm/melody: The Original Dust in the wind gets the Basic melody just from the 1,+2+2and +3and if you count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and etc. So the Notes on 3 + 4 +4and are just in the background and thatsway you have to play them less loud. And offcurse you have to play nothing on 1and to get a quarter note there. Took me a while to figure out why it sounds different on my guitar too.

I appreciate the nice and slow. approach. Originally, I thought I'd listen to the song and get the tempo and phrasing down until I realized that I have to go back to the beginning and just play all the notes as very slow quarter notes. Over, and over and over again is the key.

From this to "Just breathe" by Pearl Jam is just a little step, could you do that please?
