I love the fact that, unlike other sailing channels, you guys are putting in the HARD work to restore and improve your boat rather than begging subscribers and patrons to “give money” for a “new” boat. I have unsubscribed from other sailing channels that have done that - so Bravo Zulu to you!!
@claybornlewis276
@claybornlewis276 10 месяцев назад
I have unsubscribed from people for the same reason if you're too damn lazy to put into work to fix your boat then you really don't need to be boating the channels I watch everybody works on their own boat and I'm proud to say that I will not help anybody buy a brand new boat
@julianbatcheler9970

@@claybornlewis276most other sailing channels have become really quite dull. Either babies, babies, babies… or look at our new catamaran. Not really interested in either. Love kids… but had my own and as all older parents learn eventually… no one is really that interested in hearing about your kids… I’ve had 25 years of my own being cute LOL I aim to get back into sailing and my boat will be smallish and cheapish and the channels with expensive brand new boats are totally meaningless to me. True words. Same for me. It's the projects that keep me watching, too. It's interesting to see the ideas, the approach, the adaptions to their daily life, the going-electric, aesthetical points and so on - done by their own hands. All in all they do a good job keeping the content many-sided.

Maybe a diy dust collector cyclone to act as a pre-filter would be an option to keep the clogging of your vacuum at a mininimum level. You guys rock, taking on this massive project is a true challenge!

I bought a duststopper that just goes on top of a 5 gallon bucket. Its a bit expensive for what it is but honestly for the time it would take to make my own and make it fit properly to vacuum hoses it was worth it just to have it.
@Sailing_Victoria
@Sailing_Victoria 10 месяцев назад
The dust collector is the best option, but needs at least one extra plastic bucket-in-the-bucket and even some plywood holders inside to prevent collapse. I have had such a setup for a long time. It's just a must-have for any fiberglass work onboard. At least 99% of the dust ends up inside. And I have to clean the vacuum anyway, but once a week after active grinding...
@robm.4512
@robm.4512 10 месяцев назад
There’s a few slightly larger scale variations on the dust handling theme for woodworking from places like Machine Mart (UK). The cheaper ones aren’t exactly industrial rugged but they have a decent capacity and are good enough for this job.

Years ago when you were younger you wouldn't have given yourself space to recuperate and heal before diving into another day's work. Now you are taking the time and space to find a balance between boat projects and your life of exploration. I also see how you have grown as a couple! As a Boatbuilder I would like to make the observation, that I would expect an offshore Yacht to have had the Hull hand laid up, in an air conditioned mold room, in one continued operation. Isophthalic resin being used, and an Epoxy barrier coat under the anti fouling. For safety at sea this would be the least you could do. I hope the repair being done to Uma is as good or better, for the sake of future sailors safety. I do like your Chanel, and superb sailing ability, both of you, { good luck }

It is too late to help you with this big sanding project but maybe the next or other listeners. I used a simple cyclonic prefilter before the vacuum to remove at least 95% of the dust before it even gets to the vacuum. I use the DustTopper which is available at many different stores. I sanded the entire bottom of my boat and never plugged the filters.

For the vacuum cleaner, use a cyclonic separator before the vacuum. This could prevent the vacuum cleaner from overheating ( As most of the dust would be taken out of the air that makes it to your vacuum). Also you will also want to check your A/C to see how much dust got inside of it, and clean it out. Another trick is to use camel pack filled with ice water, to keep you hydrated. This does add more bathroom breaks.... The idea to only sand every second day, will also help to keep you more hydrated, as you recover on the second day. An industrial full face shield with respirator would be ideal, for exposed skin, as your suit head piece would form around the face shield. My biggest concern with the sanding was if you broke through the hull.

My experience building fiberglass boats in the 1960s made me a wooden boat fan. As the mechanic’s assistant, I crawled around (without a protective suit) the barely cured fiberglass hull installing all the mechanical systems. The red itchy skin that resulted is a vivid memory to this day. Bristol Yachts was making shoddy fiberglass boats that were in competition with the shoddy fiberglass boats made by Pearson. You have demonstrated that the Pearson 36 was sufficiently over-engineered to last until now. I am reliving your itchiness and your pain! Take every possible precaution to protect yourselves from the resin and the fiberglass.
