Dusty Hill Life Story (1949 - 2021) Dusty Hill ZZ Top Bass Player
The sudden death in July 2021 of ZZ Top bass player, singer, songwriter and keyboard player Dusty Hill was especially devastating given the man’s robust, yet understated, presence on the rock star A-list over such a long period of time. With his long, flowing beard, black shades and inevitable cowboy hats, Hill and his mirror-image bandmate, guitarist Billy Gibbons, along with drummer Frank Beard, created a sound, an image and a mythology that defined ZZ Top, the self-described little ol’ band from Texas, and turned them into one of the wonders of the rock’n’roll world.
Like the heads carved out of stone on Mount Rushmore, these larger-than-life Methuselahs seemed destined to last forever. Indeed the band were touring right up to the day Hill died in his sleep at home in Houston, having gone to the city to seek treatment for an injury to his hip, with the band’s guitar tech Elwood Francis taking his place on stage. Almost immediately, Gibbons stated the band’s intentions to play out the remaining shows on the tour.
From humble beginnings in 1969 in Houston, ZZ Top initially toured their way to greatness in America and, by the time they mounted their Worldwide Texas Tour of 1976, had become one of the biggest stadium acts in the land.

A while back I was riding my motorcycle to Guilford, NH to see ZZ TOP that night. As I was stuck in traffic going into Concord I saw a group of bikes ahead in the next lane. My lane moved up a few car lengths and I noticed a nice custom chopper with a Texas plate that read, "ZZTOP." As I moved along side I recognized Dusty on the bike. I gave him a thumbs up and said I'll see you tonight. He returned a nod and a great big smile. It was a memorable moment and the show was too.

Damn good memory for me. 63 now and don't get to go to many shows anymore but I'll never forget those green lasers and Waitin for bus and Jesus just left Chicago that night with my brother. RIP MAN you've given me alot of enjoyment for a long time.

I saw ZZ in the early 80s and I will never forget the visual of Dusty and Billy walking toward each other on treadmills up above the drumkit. It was surreal, and one of the most memorable moments of all the rock concerts I have attended over the years. Dusty hasn't left us, he is still hanging out at that invisible 7-eleven. RIP

I saw them in 1973 in Virginia Beach at an outdoor concert in the hot summertime. They played during the hottest time of the day. Dusty Hill actually fainted on stage during the middle of a song. The other 2 just kept on playing while a roadie came out and revived Dusty with a cold swig of something. He then regained his footing, listened to find his place in the song and jumped right back in!!! Incredible. Will never forget that. Tough hombres!!

I saw ZZ Top 3 times. The first was in 1980. They exceeded my expectations. Again in 1984. The last time was in 2014. The inaugural show of the Jeff Beck/ZZ Top pairing in Missoula, Montana. That 30 year span between the last two shows, for me a record of time having passed between seeing a band that still had the original members, will never be beaten. Just think of how many bands came and went during that 30 years. All the while, those same 3 gentlemen were out there showing the world how it's done. R.I.P, Dusty. Thanks for the memories.

I’m 62 and my first concert was the World Wide Texas Tour in 76 at Anaheim Stadium. Blue Oyster Cult, Johnny and Edgar Winter (Frankenstein!) and Point Blank opened. Still a strong memory, and who knew it would become a legendary tour. BOC- Cities on Flame, Don’t Fear the Reaper, and Johnny and Edgar were awesome. Even Point Blank was a pretty killer blues rock band, too! But ZZTop was and is always #1. Bless Dusty’s soul…

I came home from Nam in late 1969 found a job and one day I went to a club my band played in before I was drafted. A play bill was on a post with the band ZZTOP playing in Willie Purple’s. This was early’70s. They looked like little boys and Gibbons was working on his punk band moves. Their first album hadn’t came out yet. I paid $1.50 at the door to see them. Wonderful times!

"God bless the simple man!". I found myself in the person of the one man watching a ZZ live show. In fact they are truly artists who love what they do and that's why they will be as long as this world will be and after it. I was so lucky to discover ZZ TOP and find myself in their music, and more lucky to find some "simple artists" who make this great music. I love early-early mornings riding my car to fishing, night driving on lonely roads winh sounds of Got me under pressure and Planet of women. And I am sure that ZZ's music has created a positive curent in the people of this world. I just like to belive that and I tested it. Usualy those who like ZZTOP are just simple man, positive people, a get up-keep walking-no matter what style, love and respect for womans. "Jesus just left Chicago" " God bless the simple man!" Rest in peace Dusty! Dumnezeu sa te odihneasca Dusty! I salut you all from Romania!

Just before Dusty joined ZZ Top the band was called The Moving Sidewalks. In 1969 I saw them perform in downtown Houston Texas @ Allen’s Landing Love Street Light Circus. The music was good & loud & the venue was psychedelic as hell. Shortly afterwards Billy, Dusty, & Frank became ZZ Top & then as we all know, they rocked our socks off baby.

In the 80's ZZ Top opened for The Stones at the Cotten Bowl in Dallas. The Stones had a big pink stage with runners that went out to the 30 yard line . Just before ZZ Top came on stage some Roadies came out and unrolled a black carpet out in front of the drum kit riser. When they came on stage Billy Gibbons said "We're happy to open for the Stones today, but I'll be damned if were gunna play on a pink stage in Dallas" They played a great show!

I’ve been fallowing ZZ Top since the early 70’S. My favorite album is Tejas. The hole album is great. The last song asleep in the desert is awesome. While in college living in Klamath Falls, Oregon I’d spend many a night listening the Tejas at night my mind immersed in the album looking south out over town towards the Oregon / California border the moon shining bright on a clear night the stars shining dreaming I was out in the desert of the southwest on the Mexican border. In the early 90’s when they where on tour they would stop in Portland, Oregon usually during the week of thanksgiving. I’d take that week off for vacation and hangout at my favorite Italian restaurant “ The Monte Carlo “ during the day then go see ZZ Top at night. One year the concert sold out so fast they booked another concert the next night and maybe a third, I’m not sure. Best week of vacation I ever had . The Monte Carlo restaurant by day and ZZ Top concerts at night👍👍👍. It just didn’t get better then that.

@@HistoryandNostalgiaChannel that was a great time . In my beginning days working for I’d say a corporation I’d only got 1 week of vacation a year so I’d take 3 days off over thanksgiving the rest was paid holidays so it turned into 9 days off. The Monte Carlo was a old school Italian restaurant that on the inside looked like you just stepped into a s scene out of the Sopranos. The food was awesome and I knew all the staff that worked there. I’d go in for their luncheon buffet drink endless cups of coffee and read the daily newspaper all afternoon then off to see ZZ Top at night. It was great, it just didn’t get any better then that.

I’m a native Texan born and raised in SE Houston and ZZ Top, Johnny Winter, Freddie King and numerous other blues and blues rock bands were inspirational. And also you several big band sounds of bands in the city that were bad ass! Unfortunately other than ZZ Top not much of that exists anymore. My mum introduced me to ZZ Top in the early 80s. Before Eliminator. I've been a huge fan ever since. Im the old guy (54) that cruises around in the summer with my windows down blaring ZZ. I have been extremely fortunate enough to see them live in concert 12 times. Their stage shows, for the most time, were brilliant. There was a couple that were so-so. But the music made up for the poor stage planning. My favorite tour was Recycler. Real good mix of all their music up to that point. I can't say I have one favorite song. It would be near impossible to just pick one. The tune I really can't stand, "Cheap Sunglasses" And its really just because the radio stations played it to death. Every bar we went to even in the late 80s played it. Yes, I was 20 in 1989, so I was old enough to drink. I'm Canadian. I actually haven't listened to that song in a very, very long time. Maybe if I did, it may change my mind. With Dusty being gone, I don't think I will go to another one of their concerts. Elwood may have the musical talent, but he's not Dusty. R.I.P brother. You will forever be missed. You are and always be a legendary Bass player. Right there with the Ox, John Entwistle, and lets not forget Lemmy from Motorhead.

Well here’s a better one. I got to play the drum kit @6:16 . Mind you I’m not a drummer. And was all over the place , Frank was rolling on the floor laughing his ass off. He finally got up , and came over and said “Lou stick to guitar man you’ll never make it as a drummer ..” we all had a good laugh over it. Then we all went back to work. Them practicing ,and me prepping the intelligent light show with the head lighting engineer. Good times. But I have to say Frank was right. The one time I was able to see ZZ Top was in the Summit in Houston in the 90s - And the Houston Rockets BB team were in the finals to win their first championship and had won the night before the ZZ Top concert. This meant the Rockets were coming home to play and the Summit needed to be reconfigured for BB! ZZ played most of their hits but were in a hurry to finish the concert so that the construction team could move in! Was a bummer but I still enjoyed the concert but I felt a little cheated by the situation! Love the band! RIP Dusty and thanks for the great music! ❤
