I can't decide what I like best, the almost ridiculously loving lyrics, Dusty's fantastic voice, Martha's fantastic voice, the Vandella's fantastic voices, or all four of their pretty faces.
They were good friends! Dusty is the reason why Motown came to the UK for this show. Motown chief Berry Gordy wanted Diana Ross in this duet but Dusty wanted her friend Martha. Poor Betty Kelly having to squeeze close to Rosalind as Dusty keeps blocking her!
Martha Reeves and the Vandells were an amazing group who's music transcended culture's and generations. I loved their songs then and now, when I play their music I watch my 21grandkids immediately jump up and dance! Dusty Sprigfiel had Soul, her sound and energy was infectious! Made everyone get up and dance! She was beautiful inside and out. Heart of gold! RIP Gorgeous 💞
Greatest blue eyed soulstress of all time duetting with Martha. What a joy to see this clip. Dusty Springfield was instrumental in introducing young european audiences to Motown and black R&B generally via her weekly TV show. It was just the leg up Berry Gordy needed and he and the artists at motown never looked back. Her music is revered by so many titans of black music and with good reason. They all recognised a kindred sister with soul whose once in a lifetime talents shone so brightly. Gone much too soon. Love you Dusty xx
I don't know if they were involved, but I do know that Martha was a huge fan of Dusty's. It's said that when she heard Springfield's first U.S. hit on the radio, Reeves thought Dusty was a black American singer and wondered why Motown hadn't signed her.
Superb, the success of black music in the UK owes so much to Dusty's promotion of Motown here and this collaboration works really well as the four girls were great friends.
This is a little bit of revisionist history. There was staunch segregation in music halls and televisions shows in Great Britain at the time. Black artists were not played on radio stations, but redone versions by white artists were. It took a LONG time to change that. Yes, Dusty helped but things were still bad
B. Bailey, They had fun in bed together too. I read many books about the Supremes, and one of the books had said Martha and Dusty had slept together. I don't care anyway, i just thought i would put that out there.
Music has done more for race relations than all the politicians in the world. These girls were so happy to be in each other's company and making beautiful music.
I think the smiling and the laughing was because Dusty was gay and although this is a great song, the words are absurd and the girls knew this very well.
Everytime I talk to people about what allies truly look like, I always tell the story of Dusty Springfield. She was an amazing singer and performer. She was so inspired by American soul/R&B and she knew the racial barriers made it a lot easier for her than the wonderful black performers. She fought segregated concert halls and she lifted up black performers every opportunity she got. If she could do it in the 60's, every white person can do it now
Back in the old days, live TV was like oops, oh well, nobody can watch it again. This is incredible. You can watch it over and over again...and find no error. It's absolute perfection.
So much perfection with an unmatched, beautiful style. Their voices blend together like butter on hot toast. This is the public service announcement for U.K. / U.S.A. relations. Best friends forever. Absolutely lovely!
I love the sixties sound a backlash to millennial music toxicity.i loved this video it shows equality that both black and white singers sings together.
Two of the greatest natural voices in the industry...thanx for posting....if you have any musical taste you know that you are listening to real singers, not merely entertainers...but true vocalists.
Berry Gordy had insisted Dusty do a duet with Diana Ross but held her guns and went ahead and due what she planned with Martha. It was a sad time for Martha; Gordy had told her that from now the Supremes would be treated as the top female group at Motown and the Vandellas second. Martha was appalled at the cruelty of it and the fact it wasn't necessary. Eventually she ended up hospitalized with emotional problems. She is such an intelligent, informed and articulate lady; no one deserved to be treated as she was.
@@jackanthony976 There is no way you can compare Martha and the Vandellas with the Supremes. The Supremes we're fabulous. Martha was not as good as them. No how, no way.
Gordy wasn't so nice to the other Supremes either. In her autobiography, Mary Wilson said Gordy once said to her something like "Mary, you know you never could sing"
I think I said this on another Channel but Dusty Springfield kicked the Door for every Blue Eyed Soul Singer from Joss Stone, Jessie J., Amy Winehouse (RIP), Lisa Stansfield and Adele.
I regularly praise Dusty and her heaven blessed solo talent. This duo confirms her versatility and clever and effortless way of accommodating her duetting partners beautifully, from fireside crooners to fiesty Motown legends, what a phenomenon she was.
wow! what a piece of film,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it really kicks ass with the addition of the rest of the girls. what heart felt talent. man, those were the days
I'm glad Dusty did the Duet with Martha. Diana Ross likes to be the Center of Attention. Also, it's cool that they did Burt Bacharach. He was very lucky that his Songs were popular especially with The British Invasion, Motown & The Beach Boys dominating The Charts at the time. You know what's so sad Martha was only allowed to sing a Snippet of "Heatwave" on Motown 25.
such a shame martha was messed about.. but loving the enjoyment and effortless live performimg of these singing talents.. do they make em like they use to is the real question👌
Yes it had some broken meter, but overall for the sake of prosperity, this was one great captured tribute to Dusty and Martha, plus Martha's Vendealla's were stellar
Many black music styles, black artists were appreciated and loved in UK before US. It is also said that UK working class could identify not only with African-American music, the lyrics of a lot of songs were appreciated too, and seemed to talk about their lives. Like "sitting on the dock of the bay" from Otis. As to Duty's choice for Martha, It's all about certain essential differences. I prefer Martha's style and energy.
