Dusty was a national treasure here in the UK. Her best? Probably Son of a Preacher Man from her Memphis album. Real soul!

Absolutely a national treasure in the UK, and she wasn't exactly an old shoe here in the US. Just a great performer and great person.

She and Dionne Warwick (Whitney Houston's cousin) ruled the airways in the mid to later 60's onward. Both were blessed with soaring voices and both sang many Burt Bacharach songs. Such wonderful Sunday memories, Shawn. Blessings all.

Oh man, Shawn. Dusty is an icon, but the most iconic- and must-hear - songs by her are Son of a Preacher Man and The Look of Love. You’ll be blown away.

This was recorded in the ladies loos at Phillips studios, London. It gave the ambience she wanted. Dusty more or less produced her own records and knew exactly what sounds she wanted to create. She was influential in bringing the Motown sound to the UK, championed civil rights and got deported from South Africa for refusing to play to segregated audiences while on tour in ‘64. She was the first international artist to take this stand. She also helped to get Led Zeppelin signed to Atlantic records by recommending them to the label bosses. John Paul Jones of Zep played bass and arranged on her late 60s albums. Ian Gillan, legendary vocalist of Deep Purple, toured with Dusty in ‘65 and said she had the greatest female rock voice he ever heard. Dusty could really sing!

"I Know A Place" "Colour My World" "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love" "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener" and "Downtown" - amongst many others. Dusty had a more soulful voice but Petula scored more hits in the USA - there are quite a lot of YT clips of her on various American pop/variety shows eg The Dean Martin Show.

@@steveullrich7737 To be honest like many back then ~ it was The Beatles performance on Ed Sullivan that first awoke me to music ~ it coincided with an AM radio station that was playing all of the British Invasion acts that first made me aware of Mary O'Brian who became known to the world as Dusty Springfield

Dusty was one of the greatest singers ever, this song is one of the best in music history. Wishing and Hoping, I only Wanna be with you, A Brand New Me, Son of a Preacher Man all very very good plus the covers she does makes them her own like Linda Ronstadt.

Such a great performer and singer. I had the pleasure of seeing her here in NYC in and around 1965 or '66. She was a joyful, personable, passionate singer. One of the great pop voices that I really miss. RIP to you Dusty. Try her doing "I Only Want To Be With You" which was another big hit for her here in the US.

One of Dusty's songs "The Look of Love" was the centerpiece of the movie "Casino Royale", (1967 version) a spy parody film with a complicated production history. So the film looks like it was made by different teams. Perhaps best viewed with friends to help provide added commentary while viewing. I have seen this once with friends and I got through it OK.

Similar genre is The Walker Brothers the song is called The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore. The British invasion with groups like Them singing Here Comes the Night. Is Van Morison. Manfred Mann sing a song called Pretty Flamingo. And so many other excellent singers from that era.

Burt Bacharach had her sing some of his songs that he and Hal David wrote. Also Dionne Warwick! I found that some of the Bee Gees songs are on the same line as Burt's. Great minds!!!! They used "complicated & catchy notes" off the creative and normal way!! That's the only way that I can say it. Just for the record: This was a 1965 song written by Pino Donaggio & Vito Pallavicini. Dusty sang this in 1966 when it was released. She DID sing, however, some of Bacharach's songs. ( Gotta get it right )

She had a fabulous voice, and her vibrato was out of this world. Total control. when she came on the radio with a new song, you KNEW who it was, no guessing. Good music / songwriting never stays in the same key, going on and on....it rises up a step to give more musical tension, setting up a resolution to the song, or bring a climax to the song. But the singer also has to make it different when that happens too. the reason the instruments sound amazing are twofold. first the arrangement, the written out music compliments both the lyrics/message of the song, and the melody. 2nd, there are real f-ing master musicians playing on it, not musical simpletons and computers etc.

This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). Her biggest hit was "Son Of A Preacher Man" in 1969. She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "Wishin' & Hopin' ", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.

Loved Dusty since the early 60s in England and her group with her brother, the Springfields. She and Toronto gay icon singer/songwriter Carole Pope of the band Rough Trade('All Touch', 'High School Confidential')were good friends, as were Pope and Nona Hendryx, ex of Labelle.('Lady Marmalade'.)

Shawn, The Look of Love ALL the way! Her rendition is so sultry, smoky, and just WOW! When she was rehearsing or recording it, she told Burt Bacharach she thought it was 'too sexy sounding' and he said keep doing it just like that. Son of a Preacher Man is the go-to for most for Dusty and it was probably the most popular, though. Also very good, but The Look of Love will blow you away. :)

A similar 'structure' to this are two great songs from then -- "A Time For Us" (Johnny Mathis) and "Where Do I Begin?" Andy Williams. "Swooning songs" you can call them.... with that dance they do on the goosebumps on your neck
