DUTCH FIREFIGHTERS - BIG FIRE IN A BUILDING 

Hey. How does opening up the building helps stopping the spread? I would think it helps fire grow due to extra oxygen the fire gets.

@@axelxan Opening up the building reduces the amount of heat and smoke so when they make entry it’s more tenable for them. Plus as extinguishment takes place, plus search and rescue, it makes it easier on the firefighters to accomplish since their visibility improves, and if there is someone inside needing rescue, it improves their chances.

I think the Dutch guys took the example from airport fire trucks. They bring about 1700 liters of water, plus some foam fluid in the truck and have a high pressure hose rigged up and ready to go. The airport guys have much more water but don't have to maneuver through city traffic (their trucks are too large). But yes, I admire their quick attack way. The high pressure allows them to spray finer droplets, which is even more efficient at cooling down a fire than a continuous stream of water.

The trick is not having to first set up water supply. The standard truck carries at least 1700 litres of water and has 2 attached high pressure lines. With those 2 lines the can immediately attack the fire while the rest of the crew gets the water supply going from the nearest hydrant or tanker.

True. And the strange thing is that American fire trucks are two times as big, but get owned by European vehicles :D

@@jannis1333 I've heard several times of hoses being punctured by broken glass. It seems the Dutch high pressure hoses seem to be more resistant to that, so I hope Germany's fire brigades will adopt that technology as well. (*makes_note* gotta talk to a colleague who seems to have some input in the equipment specs for at least one volunteer station here in Germany...)

@@Consequator Klopt maar dit verschilt wel eens. In dit geval hebben ze een gele en een blauwe kleur zodat ze te onderscheiden zijn bij het verdeelstuk meen ik. Rood is overigens nog wel de standaard kleur voor alle andere slangen behalve O-Bundels

@@Consequator De grote rode lage druk slangen zijn eigenlijk ouderwets aan het worden. De O-bundels zoals te zien in de video zijn makkelijker te gebruiken (vooral bij flats), zijn sneller inzetbaar dan de originele lage druk, en geven meer water. In alle opzichten een verbetering. De rode slang zal dus voor brandweerinzet langzaam uit het straatbeeld verdwijnen. Enkel het voeden van de TS gaat dan nog via de rode slang.

Redvoertuig is uiteindelijk wel ingezet, deze kwam later (reden mij niet bekend). Zijn nog een aardige tijd bezig geweest met nablussen van de brand in het dak. Waar het redevoertuig bij ingezet is. Dit is niet meer te zien op het filmpje.

Yes, but the commander has to request one before they send it to the scene if it`s a normal fire call. If however there is a call of a chimney or thatched roof fire, dispatch will send a ladder most of the time with the engine straight away.

It's a heat seeking device. It has a little screen that shows thermal images of the area it's pointed at. That way they can detect any possible hidden fires in ceilings and walls etc.

Another clueless euro tool who knows absolutely nothing about the american fire service. Lemme guess you watched a blooper real of some backwoods volunteer departments that are lucky to get a fire once a decade. Traditional forcible entry via halligan and axe takes the trained american ff maybe 30 seconds to open a door. The saws come out for window bars, roll down doors and heavily fortified metal doors. I have never once seen or heard if a department using hydraulic/hydroelectric extrication tools to force entry to a working structure fire. We bring all the tools necessary for the respect positions assignment. Most of the videos of european departments ive seen, someone has to be sent back to the engine to grab a crow bar to open up and check for extension or expose the fire. Hell even our officers (i.e. lieutenant, captain etc.) Carry what we call an officers tool. I dont understand the negativity that euro ffs have towards american tactics and vice versa. Also not sure what materials your buildings are made with. Most of ours are wood frame buildings. A lot of the time fires are pretty well advanced in arrival do to the wood construction as well as the highly flammible furniture and other such things found in american homes. Fires here double in size every 30 seconds. A room can be fully involved in only a few short minutes. I like some of the things you fellas do over there tho. My department is on the border of NYC so we've adopted a lot of their tactics. We get water on the fire rather quickly and 99 percent of the time we run on the 500 gallons of tank water our engines carry while a water source is established. Im trying to get ppl around here to understand the benefits of fog nozzles for structure fires as hydro ventilation is fantastic when trying to clear smoke and hot gases out of a room or building after the fires been largely knocked down. That and the ability to shoot a narrow fog into a room for a few seconds, close the door and let the steam do the work. Then open it up, close the pattern in the nozzle and cool the smoldering material. Again we do things for a reason over here. We've had lab studies done on modern structure fires with everything from ventilation to hoseline diameter and gallonage being tested. Ive seen more than enough videos of euro fire companys using a small diameter high pressure hose on a fire that requires significantly more volume, while everyone else stands around. Its like watching somone piss on a wild fire. That coupled with guys not bringing the necessary tools to get the job done so someones using their hands to pull burning material instead of using a tool made for that job. There are plenty of poor tactics on both sides of the pond.

I'm not sure about the english version, but overhere in the Netherlands we have this saying that goes: "de beste stuurlui staan aan wal".

When you only attack the fire, the fire can be expanding. When you make the stuff that doesn't burn wet, you make sure that the fire will not expanding. In the Netherlands we have 4 different deployments. 2 defensive deployments and 2 offensive deployments. Defensive deployments means that you will stop the expansion of the fire. Offensive deployments means that you will attack the fire. Both deployments has a deployment from outside the building and a deployment inside the building. When you don't have enough water, you choose for a defensive deployment. I know. It's a lot of theory. When you are coming at the address of the fire, you have 3 questions. You can answer the questions after a 360-check. 1. Do I know where the fire is? 2. Can I reach it? 3. Have I enough water? When you have at least 1 'no' as answer, the change is very big that you can't save the building. By question 2 you have 2 options. You can reach the fire with a deployment inside the building and a deployment from outside. You must give the answer at question 2 with the deployment from outside the building. When there is a 'no', you can looking for a deployment inside the building. That is only possible when that is save enough. For question 3 you must know what is the intensity of the fire and what is the cooling capacity of the water. In the Netherlands you have 2 hoses. A high-pressure and a low-pressure. The low-pressure has a cooling capacity of 10 megawatt. The high-pressure has a cooling capacity of 2,5 megawatt. 2,5 megawatt is equivalent to a sofa (in Dutch 'bank'). One high-pressure is enough for a living room of about 40 square meter. When you have a space of 1000 square meter, you needed a cooling capacity of 500 megawatt. In that case, you don't have a choice between a defensive deployment or a offensive deployment. You don't have enough water. Only the defensive deployment is possible. I hope that you understand my theoretical explaining.

@@dirk75nl Als je als bevelvoerder met de tankautospuit ter plaatse komt een rondomverkenning (ook wel een 360 genoemd) maken. Op basis daarvan moet je een 3-tal vragen stellen. 1. Weet ik waar de brand woedt? 2. Kan ik er (het liefst van buitenaf) bij? 3. Heb ik genoeg water? Wanneer je minimaal 1 vraag met 'nee' moet beantwoorden, dan heb je al een vrij grote kans dat het pand als verloren beschouwd moet worden. Bij vraag 2 mag je, indien een buiteninzet niet mogelijk is, kijken of een binneninzet mogelijk is. De antwoorden bepalen de inzet van de komende minuten. Om de 5 a 10 minuten moet je als bevelvoerder kijken naar wat er veranderd is. Je kan het vervolg van de inzet bepalen door weer de vragen te stellen. Na het beantwoorden van de vragen ga je kijken naar het kwadrantenmodel. Daarin staan de 4 verschillende inzetmogelijkheden. Een offensieve binneninzet, een offensieve buiteninzet, een defensieve binneninzet en een defensieve buiteninzet. Bij een defensieve inzet worden gebouwen nat gemaakt en gehouden zodat de kans op door- en/of overslag beperkt wordt. Bij een offensieve inzet wordt de brand bestreden. Dat laatste is dus alleen mogelijk als je 3x een 'ja' hebt. Of je genoeg water hebt hangt van meerdere factoren af. De grootte van de ruimte waarin de brand woedt, wat er in de ruimte staat en/of ligt en hoe groot alle gaten bij elkaar zijn waardoor zuurstof bij de brand kan komen. Hoe groter de ruimte, hoe meer zuurstof en brandstof er in de ruimte kan zijn. Hoe meer brandstof er is, hoe meer er kan branden. Hoe groter de gaten bij elkaar zijn, hoe meer zuurstof er bij de brand kan komen. Het is ook handig om te weten waar de brand woedt. Het is handiger om bij de achterdeur naar binnen te gaan als daar de brand woedt dan dat je bij de voordeur naar binnen gaat om dan het hele pand door te moeten lopen om bij de brand te komen. Het beste is nog om, indien mogelijk, door de achterdeur de brand te blussen. Dan hoeft niemand in het pand te komen. Daarvoor zijn de eerste 2 vragen belangrijk. Heb je een nee (bij vraag 2 blijft het een nee nadat je hebt gekeken of een binneninzet mogelijk is), dan moet je echt voor een defensieve inzet kiezen. Dus het natmaken en houden van aangrenzende en/of naastgelegen panden. Je zou er voor kunnen kiezen om expres grote gaten te maken zodat (in theorie) mogelijk de brand sneller door de brandstof heen is. Daardoor zou je eerder klaar kunnen zijn met een inzet. Alleen is dat voor zover ik weet (nog) niet onderzocht, maar wel aannemelijk. Als jij met je auto goed blijft gasgeven ben je ook sneller door de brandstof heen dan wanneer je wat zuiniger rijdt. Daarnaast heb je doordat de brand heviger is ook nog eens de zekerheid van een goede verbranding.

@@berendt87 ik snap je antwoord. maar ik heb er wat moeite mee als mensen zeggen dat de best stuurlui aan wal staan. en dan niet onderbouw. ik snap dat je er van uit ga dat het om stoffen kan gaan die brandbaar zijn en terecht. en dat ze naar binnen gaan voor het zoeken. daar was het mijn om te doen.

@@dirk75nl Ik snap dat je daar moeite mee hebt. Maar het kan ook bloedje irritant zijn als mensen zonder al teveel kennis hun mening droppen. Ik probeer alleen uit te leggen waarom bepaalde handelingen plaats kunnen vinden. En, inderdaad flessen zijn in potentie gevaarlijk. Je hebt niet alle tijd om te bestuderen wat er precies in zit. Dus ga je maar uit van gevaar. Zoals een brandweerman ooit in een tv-programma zei 'alles wat de lucht in gaat komt vanzelf weer naar beneden. De helm beschermd tegen best wel wat dingen, maar het houdt geen metalen dingen van een paar kilo tegen. Daarom snap ik trouwens ook niet veel van helmen in de bouw. Tegen een paar spijkers zal het beschermen, maar niet tegen een betonblok.
