(40:03 ; 1:03:34).

This is funny story of Dvořák´s cousin Anna. For many years (until the year 1873, when he got married) Dvorak lived in Prague with his aunt Josefina Duskova on Karlovo namesti. His cousin Anna Duskova wrote about this period, stating: “Antonin would take breakfast with us, he went to the Zpevacek pub near the National Theatre for lunch, and he went there for dinner as well. My mother did his washing for him. When the plum season came around he would ask if she would make him lunch, and I can still picture my mother counting out thirty plum dumplings for Antonin; there was never anything left on his plate. When we moved to a larger flat in the back part of the house, he had a piano in his room which he had on loan; there was a table opposite the piano, behind which was a bed. He often started composing as soon as he woke up. He would first tap out a musical idea on his quilt with his fingers. If he was writing at the table, he would hold the quill between his teeth and finger his coat as if he were playing the piano, or he would tap out the tune on his legs. Then he would turn to the piano, play something through and sing softly to himself as he did so. Often I would sneak into the room and listen. He would stare fixedly at me, whistle to himself softly, but he probably didn’t know I was even there!” [...] “He never had any affairs; the family used to say that he was afraid of women. He would sometimes say: Now there’s a pretty girl! But that’s where it ended.” www.antonin-dvorak.cz/en/did-you-know I dont agree with the last comment of his family because he had lot of kids with his wife.

Thank you! I love to read the comments written by people who know the background and can teach us things about the music and the musicians! And I am an admirer of Dvorak's music. To me, the 7th and 8th symphonies are stunning, as are the concertos and the quartets.

I love Dorati's interpretation of these gorgeous pieces as I hear them more often. I have always revered Talich's Czech Philharmonic vintage recording of the Slavonic Dances, but these are different in a very good way, and equally satisfying. The recorded sound here is excellent as well, thanks to the superior uploading quality by Reference Recording. What a great service to music lovers all over the world! Thank you, and great success for your future efforts!

@@writeract2 it's 4:30 AM. Feeling under the weather with a serious cold. I opened the Czech Suite and it immediately makes me feel good. The optimism in Dvorak's music is uplifting. Must be the strings. I can't think of any dark sounding from Anton Dvorak. His music also reminds me of happy Sundays when my dad was still alive. Along with the music of Beethoven, I heard Dvorak's music in our family home since my early infant days. Must be imbedded in my genes now. ;-))

As far as I am concerned, you could have continued your writing spree throughout the recording: Antonin Dvorak was a good and pious person, a composer with a divine musical talent and the story of his life and works would merit a 3-hour Hollywood movie, all the more because he spent several years as the director of the New York Conservatory ... His stay in America inspired him to what may be his greatest musical achievement, the overwhelming symphony "From the New World" and the lovely American Suite featured in this recording, which truely is a reference recording by all standards ... Still the Slavonic Dances remain a masterpiece "sui generis" ... BRAVO !!

a solid Dorati recording, great stereo. Talich's are fire, but recorded badly .... Kertesz has a nice one with the NordDeutscher , and Ancerl recorded some nicely (just a few of them)

Szell with the Cleveland is a spritelier performance and more dynamically recorded.

Simrock had to pay considerably more than 300 marks for the opus 72 set.

The Karel Ancrel version of opus 48 is very good, but it just lacks the dynamic of this WOW version.

The american suite is so badly interpreted. Its too rushed, losing Dvořák's lightness..

For example here, with Libor Pešek and Liverpool Symphonic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V8avAW5yOdU.html

Well, I find there some more differences, e.g. in the first movement ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JhBjD23F2r0.html 1:35:42, these notes shouldnt be so detache in my opinion.

You are right. This is just a different direction option. Dorati is more voluptuous, a little in the Viennese spirit. Your version has more character, it is more rustic. We love both. Thanks for the discovery :-)
