To my ears, Joshua Bell is not only an exquisite soloist with a musical mind of unmatched subtlety, but also immensely sensitive to the orchestra -- a great ensemble player. I don't always hear that in the soloist to this degree. There was nothing missing, nothing out of place, no imposition of personal dominance, just Heavenly music.

I agree. His performances are always balanced very well with the orchestra and himself, which I'd imagine is very hard to do. It adds to the experience so much, being able to hear all of the moving parts working together to create a great experience.

It's frustrating listening to this concerto if the violinist is not powerful, or has a weak instrument or the sound tech doesn't know how to mic the violin. I could hear every note, both from Bell and from the orchestra. I've always been thrilled by Bell's playing. He hits it out of the park here. Thanks, JB!!! Thanks, Bamburg! Thanks, Dvorak!

Apollo came down from Olympus to play the violin in this magnificent concerto. In contrast to what I might read down in the comments, I real enjoyed very much Bell's facial expressions - that means that he feels music when playing it! If people get somewhat upset with the expressions... just close their eyes... You are great Joshua Bell! Bravo! Bravissimo! Arcibravo!

Absolutely! I remember a concert with Barry Tuckwell performing with the Minnesota Orchestra many decades ago and he stood there stoic, expressionless, dispassionate, which robbed the performance of any soul. Barry was a great master on the horn, but he did his audience disservice at what could have been a more memorable performance.

Merci Joshua Bell!!

He plays more in the “traditional old fashioned “ style. A true concert artist has their own sound and style. It’s nice to hear individuality and true artistry!!! BRAVO !!!!! He ranks up there with Heifetz, Stern, Milstein, Oistrakh, Perlman, Zukerman, Tretyakov, Gitlis, Rosand, Haendel, Szeryng, Rapin, Vengerov, etc. All great individual sounding virtuosos. He is one of the few last live reminders of a previous era of playing.

I forgot to compliment the orchestra and the conductor. The orchestra was so sensitive with great section leaders playing solos. This is the best example of this piece for me. It’s hard to find orchestras and soloists where it’s all about the music! Plenty of tempo fluctuations. BRAVO not to be afraid of doing ritardandos and breaths, etc. Not just conservative, sterile educated musical phrasing.

I agree with you. However, I would like to disagree that moving oneself or gestures shows that a soloist doesn’t like the piece. I think stone faces can be good when it’s time to focus, but always having a stone face lacks showmanship and makes the audience bored.
@stagedoro9560
@stagedoro9560 4 года назад
@@bruh7130 I wrote a joke about Joshua Bell "not liking the Dvorak Concerto"... certainly he likes. I am brazilian and here, in the tropics, we laugh about serious things to express what we feel. These facial expressions tire the audience; a good artist does'nt need to make faces to express the subtleties of art; the best music is that we can hear with closed eyes (so said the great Brazilian composer and conductor Camargo Guarnieri with whom I worked for many years). Heifetz and Milstein had stone faces and were nonetheless charismatic.
