Don't forget to disallow tallow from being used in the kitchen for cooking. Edit: I also had to assign the potash to it's own stockpile and set barrels to 0. For some reason, if the potash was in barrels they would not make any soap.
@Bronimin
@Bronimin Год назад
no need to do that, just remove fat from the kitchen stockpile permissions and make a fat storage stockpile by the soapery

Basic: dig through aquifer Advanced: pump stack creating artificial river Expert: fortress defense traps Legendary: SOAP!!! Yeah makes sense to me for dwarves. Honestly all your stuff has been awesome, this is something I have to get figured out and appreciate all the stuff you're putting out for us Blind. Always looking forward to more. ^_^

Pro tip: embark with lye to save a lot of time, and it's a long time before you need a considerable amount of soap, you only need a few bars to cover the needs of the hospital
@kalaksed
@kalaksed Год назад
One reason i tend to prefer plant soaps, esp when modded plants or themed mods with plants (such as expanded cavern stuff) start popping up again. Tallow for cooking or candles, oil for soap ...plus, who doesn't want their whole fort smelling like lavender?
@Mirality
@Mirality Год назад
Be careful if you want to automate this with the manager. Unfortunately the default suggested conditions are broken. You can manually fix part of it (check for soap bars specifically), but the condition for having lye doesn't work. So it's best to chain the make lye and make soap orders directly instead.
@kalaksed
@kalaksed Год назад
I tend to prefer plant soaps, anyway (esp with some of the mod plants that will be created just for soaps), but good to know exactly what part is messed up for automating tallow soaps. Had heard there were issues with it but no real details until now

If you look at the Pump stack tutorial you then just need the water to fall through grates into the reservoir that you have the pump stack pumping from (to prevent flooding, if you don't have a drain or circulate the same water it's easy to flood the place.) Any dwarf that walks close enough to that area gets happy thoughts, the safe way to do this is to have the flowing water power the system via water wheels (so you can seal it off or get some power out of it), dig / build everything in the closed off system with Dwarfs able to get to the pumps before you seal them (corridor that you later wall off), and have a Pit/Pond setting to have Dwarfs drop water into the Reservoir until the system is running (you can make another hole into that Reservoir to set a Well on top of if you want to use it for both. If you keep the pond hole you can refill it if it ever starts getting low) I tend to seal off systems like this so that angry Dwarfs don't break things...

I tried to automate this in the manager's office, but the condition where it checks for bars is FUBAR for me to understand. The problem that I see is that it checks for ANY bars, metal, soap, or whatever. I tried to set the material to soap bars, but there's no "wildcard" soap option. Just soap. Instead, it lists every possible kind of soap in the game. I could just use orders for each kind of tallow we produce, but that seems dumb. Is there a way to just designate any and all soap bars in the manager's office?

Barrel works. I usually make 5-10 lye, then tear down that shop and put up soaper. The lye gets dumped into a barrel from the bucket(s) if you build a stockpile for it that allows barrels. They use it from the barrel in the soaper.

@BlindiRL I have a small request: I tried to build an in-castle outdoor area for planting. How can I make that area bird-safe if it's 4x4? All the time buzzards keep flying into the cave. I can only put floor grates along the walls, but not in the center. I thought I could use floor grates throughout the area, but that's not working.

you can floor over the farm once its been exposed to sun once
@thewalkingcrow8946
@thewalkingcrow8946 Год назад
Channel down into the ground one or two Z levels and then cover the hole with a floor. Or build walls around it and cover the walls with a floor. You can use this same trick to make a safe meeting area or barracks to keep your soldiers from getting cave-adaptation. I usually make a temple that's outdoor with some fancy statues and engraved walls so it can scratch about 3 or 4 needs at once. They don't even have to be good engravings. Soil layers treated this way will also grow grass for grazers. I like to go down 2 or 3 z-levels so I can put a kitchen on top where miasma won't form and a beehive farm if I'm doing bees. It's also possible to grow surface trees underground if there's enough Z space for them to grow. Once sunlight touches a square inside the cave it becomes flagged "outdoor" for the remainder of its existence regardless of what you build on top of the hole. I've seen a tutorial I thought by blind on this before. It might be Twisted Logic that did it. A pro-tip is to use stone blocks instead of boulders because boulders are heavy and only build one tile of floor whereas stone blocks are lighter and a boulder produces 4 blocks so you get more floor tiles per boulder if you make blocks first. Also if you are REALLY paranoid, build the floor out of fire-safe materials in case you get the random fire-breather.
@Yuusou.

@@thewalkingcrow8946 Thank you for the explanation and the tips. I wasn't aware of the status never changing. So far, my worst encounter was a weregiraffe leading to 19 dead dwarfes and a few animals. However, some bigger birds kept annoying and killing my animals, so now I need them to have a safe space, too. Therefore I'm really grateful for these tips.

@kalaksed
@kalaksed Год назад
Soap used to be considered a block, just like the blocks made from wood, stone or metal and was usable in any construction that asked for blocks. So, of course some players made entire forts out of soap... esp those that modded ethics so dwarves were okay with butcheting sentients and would therefore make elf- or goblin-soap fortresses

Was this an evil biome or a necromancer invasion? Different potential responses for each, though the 'easy' one that works for both is 'seal yourself in and kiss the outside world goodbye' (which some players love to do and there have been some pretty amazing stories about)

@@kalaksed I tried to make sure that the embark location was as safe as I could find - no haunted, no towers or tombs around. and it showed up as "siege" / "besieged" as a major even in red. It kills the opportunity for trade, assuming you can survive without some of the resources from the surface at the start.
@kalaksed
@kalaksed Год назад
@@martinez206045 so it is a necromancer invasion, which can actually be a good thing... there is at least one necromancer out there with the undead, possibly more. They're like kobolds, goblin thieves and elven ambushers in that they're invisible until spotted by someone frim your faction (or an allied one) with a high enough observer skill (There at least used to be a sort of cheaty trick to finding them, involving your bookeeper and checking book/artifacts in the bookkeeping screen, as you could find any they were carrying and zoom in on where they were hiding. Dunno if that still works, though) They can get bored and move on to whatever they were originally doing when stumbled across your fort (it's likely they were actually marching to attack something nearby when you started your fort and you just happened to place it in their path), or you could try hit and run tactics to find and kill/capture the necromancer(s). As long as they have boltholes to escape into or you build 'watchtowers' in various locations, a hunter or marksdwarf has a chance to spot the necro while avoiding undead
@kalaksed
@kalaksed Год назад
@@martinez206045 and yeah, stuff like that will kill trade until they are handled or move on (sometimes a trade caravan can be enough to get them moving again) But digging into the caverns should allow your fort to get access to everything it needs to survive except migrants.
