Arthur Haines describes the values of adaptogens for contemporary people and discusses the collection of a wild adaptogen that has been largely overlooked by modern wildcrafters.
Adaptogens are documented to assist athletes with recovery from strenuous exercise, prevent illness and disease, function as antioxidants, promote longevity, fight cancer, assist with depression and insomnia, protect the liver, improve brain function, assist with sexual dysfunction, and potentiate the effects of other medicines. These are highly valued remedies in many cultures.
The main problem in eastern North America is that the known adaptogens are relatively rare and their collection threatens wild populations. Dwarf ginseng is a widespread plant that is common in many areas. It functions as an adaptogen with research to support its phytochemical constituents and it has a history of use by Native Americans to assist with recovery from illness.

Under 20 comments on a topic of this importance after ~8 years? Well at least we need not be concerned about over-harvest, apparently ;-) Arthur, you are deeply appreciated by some, even if under-recognized by most. Please post more such videos here in the 2020s! Oh, and with over 12k views, I guess it is good that these helpers ARE abundant...

Has the unusually warm weather sped up the flowering? I would like to try harvesting on a break in our bow making class, but it might be too late with this weather.

Thank you for being so ethical with your harvesting. Nature is bountiful but only if we work with her.

We also have smilax and aralia species for adaptogens

Never seen it. I guess late May/early June , I'd be looking for them? Any luck of finding them on the midcoast? Just looking at making a little patch. Gardening helps me understand a plant as much as the foraging. Just want to learn more about the plant.

Arthur. Can you eat the leaves beside using it as a medicine?

The leaves are not toxic, and I do eat them occasionally, but I eat them as medicine. The part of this plant that has been eaten as food is the tuber.

How many weeks does it take to make the tincture and how many drops per day do you take?

All of the wild plants are going to Asia. Wild Ginseng is almost extinct. They don't care if they pick every last one. Very sad. Hopefully Dwarf Ginseng escapes that fate.
