expert tip: dont spend too much time cleaning the tank after about 5 minutes with my hand in the tank my gourami will take a nibble. I didnt raise that boy right
Mine just likes to come chill near my hand. He doesn’t really freak out over anything besides his reflection, but that just means I can’t get another Gourami 🤷🏽♂️
I have a group of eight thick lipped gourami, very similar to your dwarf or honey gourami, hand in the tank they all come up and have a good nibble on me lol. Eight fish trying to eat you all at once is an odd sensation lil
@@gurinderpreetsingh1256 mines is a pretty boy he will sit there for hours and stare at himself and as soon as food hits the water HE WILL GO TO TOWN ON THE FOOD and go right back to looking at himself and then he will go swim around and chill and bother the angles but not fighting or anything he just follows them around like a puppy😂
I had 7 in and they kicked out 4 so now I only have 3 and they stay in their own respective areas with 0 problems. But I can't believe the pet store really let me buy them all together if they were going to kill each other
Hah, I had to rehome my dwarf gourami. In a 20 gallon tall tank, he was herding my 6 albino cories into a corner (especially during mealtime) so they couldn't swim around freely. Guess I got an especially aggressive one!
Thank You SOOOOO MUUUUUUCH! This is the only video i found that says not to keep males togather in smaller tanks! i had 2 males in 10g tanks, and one was dominant and tried to fight so i seporated them ind all is good! excuse the misspellings, i have dyslexia
I had three, one constantly invade other' space, and back fin get torn off, eventually passed away from its wound even i treated it with antibiotics. other two proceed to kill one cherry rasboras, and blind another one. I removed those mf, and plan to send them back to the aquarium who told me they are peaceful fish!
I have 2 males in my 20 gallon and there is no aggression seen. However they came from a store where they were in a tank with about 15 of them together. Maybe my batch was raised that way not sure. In any case, I'm fortunate with my pair.
I have six of them in a 36 gallon. 3 different varieties and all bought at the same time and i have very minimal aggression issues. The worst Ive seen is one chasing another from a favorite spot. Never had issues with these fish and have had them in every tank I've owned over the years. There was never a time e when I owned a single gourami. The ones I have now are tank mates with a Betta. Great little fish.
You are 100% correct, I have 4 of them in a 40 gal and they chase each other quite often, very territorial and have bullied/killed one of my hatchet fish, guppie and my betta. They’re mildly aggressive.
I have a pair of what I assume are male honey Gouramis that are literally best friends. We saw them swimming together at the fish store and had to get them. They even pet each other with their ventral fins. In a 10 gallon with panda corys so far
Sadly one of my two blue dwarfs bullied the other and it died.. and that was in a 75 gal well planted tank with lots of cover and and hiding spaces. It was like the aggressor was always stalking him.
I have 2 males and 4 females in my 75g community tank. I have never had any issues with them towards the other fish. Very peaceful. I recommend getting floating plants for them. It's really sweet watching the male building a bubble nest.
Dan Hiteshew yeah it’s probably because the plants u have in the video. They prefer floating plants. Mines is always busy making a nest. Trying to find a female for him
I spent loads of money on dwarf water lettuce and frogbit for my DG and he loved it-for a while until he managed to eat pretty much all of it lol. After watching your vids I decided to try some water sprite and literally within 24 hours my gourami was beavering away like a fish possessed and built the most awesome bubble nest :-)
I have a 40 gallon breeder. I bought a dwarf gourami, liked him so much I went back and bought the last one left in the tank at Petco. I thought that since there were several in the Petco tank that it would be ok to have 2 of them in a 40 gallon. I do see that one is hanging at the top of the tank and the other is cowering in the plants and rocks. I will keep an eye on them for aggression.
40 gallons should be big enough that they can stay separated, but make sure there's plenty of stuff to break up lines of sight, so the bullied one can hide.
Dan I appreciate the info on the dwarf gouramis. I will do more research before buying one since I have guppies in most of my tanks. I am still hoping to get that 37tall soon and would love to see a beautiful blue dwarf gourami in that tank. :D
you're right on, they are betta's cousin, only gourami I was able to keep that were pretty peaceful amongst themselves were Pearl gouramis and Dwarf honey. Never kept those sparkling or chocolates but hear they can be kept in a group
I have two males along with 6 sunset platies, 6 bronze corys, 2 otos and 16 neon tetras in my 35 gal. At first the platies were ganging up on the gouramis, as every fish tend to bully new ones, but they have all calmed down and going well with each other.
I have 2 boy dwarf gourmies in a 20g with 6 neons and there all chill together and I don’t see much aggression from the gourmies and probably going to throw another 6 to 10 more neon in the tank but nice tank love the set up
love your set up I just bought a dwarf gourami for my 20 gallon which lives with 2 white skirt tetra , 2 Buenos Aires tetra and an African dwarf frog 🐸
Domini Finch I have two ADF in my tank now and they don’t get bothered by my dwarf Gourami ... I heard the full grown gouramis are more aggressive than the dwarf ones but I’m not to sure but they will do fine just make sure ADF has hiding places
My LPS said 2 Gouramis would be okay with my molly community... Next time I will do my own research! Now my Gouramis are beat up I'm trying to heal them in another tank.
YAY loved this video, I just purchased a powdered blue dwarf gourami, that I’m loving he already knows when I’m going to feed it at the surface. He’s also in a 10G and I have him by himself for now, I want to add a few harlequin rasboras in there and a few peppered Cory catfish
I have 3 male baby Gouramis w/ three Neon Tetras in a 10G tank currently. They are all extremely calm and communal! Already bought a 125 gallon for when they grow!
I have 2 neon blue males, 8 cobalt blue (2 males, 6 females), and 10 honey (all males) gouramis in the same tank. They seem to get along really well. No sign of aggression at all.
I have sliding glass to prevent my ropefish and butterfly fish from jumping out. I dont think its dry air. Between the glass braces and glass there are gaps. I have a snakeskin in my tank too. Maybe a pearl or moonlight might work. My tank is 378lt
Hey Dan!! Just started in the fish world about 6 months ago with a 15 gal tank, when we bought 4 male DWARF gourmies (3 sky blues and 1 ???) They are all best buddies!! We also have 7 guppies as well. All were purchased at different times from different places. I was told when we bought them that that the dwarf variety gourami is not nearly as aggressive as the reg/large variety. All of ours are so happy and nobody is aggressive...at all. After watching your video, I feel sooooo lucky to have a happy tank!! Whew!! We got lucky!!! I have learned so much from you! Thank you!!
Gouramis have distinctive personalities. Some are EXTREMELY mean, while others are more peaceful or even timid. As a general rule Honey Gouramis tend to be more peaceful than other Gouramis of the _Colisa_ genus, but this even applies to them. Similarly, _Colisa_ gouramis tend to be more peaceful than _Trichogaster_ gouramis (Pearls, Blues) or _Helostoma_ gouramis (kissers), but again that can depend on the individual fish. You see this a lot with Cichlids and a lot of marine fish too.
Have mine in a 20 tall planted tank… have some cherry barbs and white cloud minows with mine! Love him one of my favorites I build him his own tank when all my other community tanks nipped his barbels
My dwarf gourami (pretty sure it’s a female from a local fish store) didn’t try to go up to get food for at least a month. And just overnight it started going to the top for flakes, pellets and bug bites.
My blue dwarf looks just like yours. I had him with a few other fish in a 45gl. The tank went down hill and he was the last fish barley surviving so I quarenteened him in a 5gl for a couple weeks to recover. Now he is back in the 45gl with 2, 3 spot gauramis. He chased the 2, 3 spot gauramis around for a hr or so when I first introduced them into the tank, but their like best buddies now, and dont fight at all.
I've heard that they like company with their own species and I've heard that they are better alone, and I just don't know what to believe. I have a planted 20 gallon and I've been thinking of a few stocking ideas a couple include a dwarf gourami.
I had to learn the hard way that they don't get along with dwarf ram cichlids either, I had my fire dwarf kill one of mine recently. A single one will also be killed if it's put into a tank with larger gouramis such as the three spot and opaline. Edit: I would also recommend duckweed for a good surface plant for them, the two I currently have love it, it's easy to cultivate, and multiplies quickly to form a colony and looks great!
i plan to put a dwarf gourami in a guppy tank, ive seen it done successfully and the main tip i was given was to avoid guppies with similar colours as the dwarf gourami so blues and reds/oranges but should get along with the duller female guppies or different colour males
Any insight as to why the blue dwarfs I keep buying from PetSmart aren't lasting more than a couple days. The first few days they do fine and then they get lethargic and appeared to have problems swimming. They put themselves in the plant life and just sit there until they fall out of it and drop to the bottom where they die this is the second time this has happened this week. No noticeable aggressive behavior from other fish.
Thanks for your comments about Guppies. I have had lots of problems with Guppies being aggressive, towards each other and other fish. They are not quite the super peaceful fish that they are often recommended as being, especially by pet stores. I tried keeping them with a Betta, and it just didn't work out.
I've got two Powder Blues in my 75gal they chase each other from time to time but they actually school...and they don't flare their fins or act aggressive. They usually stick pretty close to one another and seem like good buds. But when they chase you'd need a 55+ so they don't get stressed.
I have 3 dwarf gouamis the larger of them powder blue is a little bossy but the others are OK yet much smaller. My water is well aireated so very rarely go on the surface. I love your tank set up its awesome, I have alot of plants & hiding places for my fish, I ve a community tank. & I am really surprised just how big my powder blue gouami.is. Blood worm seems to make them a little aggressive..I give them varied diet, my guppies are all over the place & I have tiger barbs they all appear to get along OK. I was worried hearing about their feelers I would not want any thing tto cause them to be unhappy. Thanks for sharing this advise. 🙌
I have a huge paludarium and getting 8 flames. I have plenty of plants and spaces and it is dim lit, full of low light plants so hoping a bigger group in a big tank will be okay. If not I have some other options if need be.
I have a blue dwarf gourami who has been in my tank for 7 days. He was fine and swam around the bottom under my live vegetation. Now he is stuck at the top in corner of tank nose up!! Not gasping but definitely looks as if hard to control himself. What could be the culprit?? What should i do to save him? Please help. Thank you!
I had two dwarf Guoramis in my tank along with two mollies, and the two guoramis were perfect with eachother, they were best buds and followed eachother everywhere. I guess I just got lucky lol. Never nipped or got aggressive.
Thanks Dan. Gouramis are my favourite feature fish too. I'm considering buying some dwarfs for my 30 gallon so I was grateful for your insights into male aggression. Thanks
Nice detailed fish profile video update on dwarf gouramis. Liked the narration of this video. What about angels and gouramis, do they get along. That java fern plant looks nice in the 10 gallon. Liked the video.
I have two male dwarf in a tank together . Well planted tank. They mostly eye each other off and avoid close contact. Will sometimes chase each other Z and have a battle rarely . Otherwise they get along pre well . Got heaps of other fish in there to .
I had purchased 4- 2 blue and 2reddish. The salesman told me they were very gentle and his Mom loved them. HA!!! These llittle guys will kill each other and now I know why my cats are acting freaky! Thanks Dan!
Nice video. I had a blue Gourami named Big Blue, he was about the same color as yours and he changed colors from almost white to a very dark blue. Then we won a goldfish from the fair. They were pretty good tankmates. Big Blue was almost 4 yrs old when he died. We still have the goldfish, he's huge, he'll be 7 yrs old this year. I do want another Gourami. Big Blue was so funny. Enjoy your fish!
I think about 10 years ago there was a lot of talk about some kind of illness that was specifically a problem with Dwarf Gouramis. I don't remember the details. I don't even think I remember seeing them for a long time in aquarium stores. . It appears that it is safe to go back to them now. I have one Pearl Gourami in a tank with a few Harlequin Rasbora. I had quite a few more HR, but the ones I have are probably 6 or 7 years old, and I don't think that they are really long - lived fish. I really like this 10 g set up with the Java Fern!
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention Dwarf Gourami iridovirus. I bought two healthy looking powder blue gouramis for my planted 20 gallon long tank. Lovely fish; they were the showpieces of my aquarium because of their colour, size and visibility. But 5 days later one got fungus all over its body. I tried treating it, but it died a day later. Less than a week after that, the other one showed signs of illness with different external growths. I tried treating it and it died a day later. After having read about the iridovirus, I'm convinced that this is what they had because of how quickly it affected them, plus the fact that no other fish in my aquarium got ill. After that I was afraid to buy another one.
AncientDrip no... i thought my 2 males would eventually get along because they used to be togather, but no... it was just my tank size and having them crammed togather
I have this color Dwarf Gourami and 2 male Platy in my tank. They get along well and don't bother eachother, but sometime the dwarf will charge at the Platys when they are in his purview and the Platys swim away quickly and things are fine again. lol
I have 3 powder blue gouramis in a 30 gal with 3 Cory's and 2 merits snails. Lots of plants so they each have their own space. Also have dwarf water lettuce, frogbit, and floating salvia. Mine are all over the tank. Super active guys! I'd like to put maybe some neon tetras in with them to have some variety, could I put 5-8 of them in with them? I'm anal about water changes so bio load would be fine if it was a bit overstocked.... I'd really like to put an angel fish or two, but I'm afraid the gouramis will pick on them. I do plan on upgrading to at least a 75 gal soon.
Question for you in a 60 breeder heavily planted very tall plants can a thick lipped gourami and a dwarf gourami live together? The plan was the dwarf was going in the 60 but I had to move what was sold to me as a honey because it was beating up on my Cories and found out it is a thick lipped can’t put the dwarf in the tank that one came from because it’s a 20 with 2 true honeys the thick lipped got along with them but hated the Cories I’m not sure the dwarf will be the same what’s your thoughts?
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly well this thick lip is twice the size of the DG it’s still a baby and the TL is pretty aggressive his self he is already chasing after the danios in the 60 lol and he has only been in there for 2 days I’m thinking he may not agree with the new addition 🤔 and there is still a few weeks left in quarantine so by then he will be top dog in that tank.
Dwarf Gourami, Powder Blue, Honey, and Flame Gourami are like happy little puppies in my 40! They have multiple areas to hide with Pothos running all along the top. It gives them so many hiding places, and different territories to claim. Very seldom do they even chase each other. I have 2 Dawrf, 2 Powder Blue, 4 Honey(regular, fire, and the very pale variant that my ignorance won't allow me to remember), 1 Pearl, 1 Flame, with some serpae tetra, and white skirts. A smaller Pleco, and 4 small corydoras. Without skipping a beat, every time I get my hand near the tank, they go absolutely nuts. I feed them by hand, and they will swim and rub against my hand. I can even chase them with my hand, and they don't even swim away. Total trust, and total love. Do it right, and these are water puppies. The serpae are notorious fin nippers, but I have had zero issues in 6 months of them settled. But, they have massive amounts of live plants and rock cave area. It's like my 37 gallon community tank. Fun, active and water puppies!! Gouramis=Love
I have had flame dwarf gouramis at different times in my life and I love those guys too Dan. I was actually debating on getting 2 or 3 sparkling gouramis in maybe a couple of months. do you have much experience with them?
I have a 36-gallon tank that has two Red Minor Tetras. I've been wanting to get a gourami for a long time now. I'd like to get either a three-spot gourami, a blue gourami, or a honey gourami. But, as you've said, they don't do well with fin-nippers and I have two red minor tetras that tend to pick on other fish. Would a 36 gallon be big enough for them to be fine? I'm also thinking of adding swordtails and a Bolivian Ram as well. I'd love some feedback and advice. Thanks!
I noticed you don't use air stones in your tanks I don't either I personally like the moire natural look, I have 2 filters that do a great job for their air..
Thank you very much for this very helpful video. It has solidified answers to questions I had about these fish. I have loved the dwarf gourami since I first set eyes on them. I have a 10 gallon tank without fish yet. I believe my tank is taller than yours. How tall is this 10 gallon tank in this video? Your gourami looks pretty happy here.
I have 3 dwarf honey gourami in a 50 gallon with some guppies and they’re all very timid and love hiding and don’t bother the guppies or each other at all
I actually have five gouramis in a heavily planted 55, but only two are dwarfs. I have a pearl and two golds. I know it's unusual, but the golds are inseparable. I have found that growing some pathos plants out of the top of the tank with the roots dangling makes a great hang out for them.
Dan Hiteshew I really like the Paradise and the Licorice Gouramis as well. I’m also thinking of doing a nano tank with Sparkling Gouramis. They are for sure my favorite! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PyXcFL5zKSk.html
Humm I have 2 Dwaft Blues in my 55 gallon when i added the second they chased it other for a few days I do have a Female and Male added the male second their bestie now
First of all, they don't. (just spent a few minutes watching them, and you'll see who the dominant bullies are). Secondly, they're crammed in a 7.5 gallon tank so they're just trying to survive, and no fish has any establish territory. (they still fight)
Exactly...seems as if they would be stressed and all. Everytime I go to the store to pur habr fish they will tell me that this fish dont get alone with this fish, but they are happily swimming together right here. I am hard headed and I try to do it anyway and I also nb get lick with the fish I pick. In my bedroom tank I have blue gouramis and electric blue Johannis n a tank.
Great video. I just added 3 dwarf gouramis to my 90 gallon. They get along fine but it is heavily planted and they have lots of space to keep to themselves. I was wondering if I could add more but maybe I would be pushing my luck?
I've kept dwarf gouramis for a while, and I've been able to totally get rid of the aggression. I did have aggression issues when I had 2 of them in a 15 gallon, but now I have 4 of them in a 33 gallon, along with some other community fish, and a good amount of plants for cover, and the aggression is completely gone :)
This Bought a powdered blue like his at first he was pretty Aggressive to my platys would push em out of the way when feeding so I took him out temporarily and made a makeshift cave out of seiryu stone after that he claimed it and has been chill ever since just think he wanted territory
I have a 250L tank and I went to buy a dwarf gourami and the guy told me that they don’t like being alone (meaning I had to buy two). I did some research before buying the fish (as you should do with anything you buy) and knew they were semi aggressive and didn’t think they should be kept together. Anyway I ended up buying two (powder blue and flame) and they got along fine but don’t believe everything a pet store employee tells you
I bought 4 gouramis; two neon dwarfs and two powder blue dwarfs. One of the powder blues was super aggressive right from the start because he decided to claim the whole 20 gallon tank. Didn't really bother anything else in the tank though.
idk I've never had or seen this being an issue other than this thread...just don't keep more than 1 male and if you have a pair or small group you just need a bigger tank. there territorial not aggressive. my two girls each picked a side of my 55 and meet in the middle when they want company and I've got 16 danios. giants zebras and longfin blues plus 5 gold barbs and nobody nips or bugs them so
Its kinda crazy what i have in my tank i have a fire dwarf gorami, blue spoted gorami,3 baby catfish, baby shark idk what its called, pleco, crab, clown knife ik they attack other fish but i kepted on watching him/her idk genders my goramis get along well i mean did a little research on blue spotted gorami are pretty calm with other fish even other gorami. Theres nothing wrong with trying somthing new if it goes wrong you can always make the right choice to move them.
I kept my dwarf gourami with Cherry barbs, which are one of the very few barbs that will not bother any other fish, ever. In fact they're quite timid. I had a much bigger tank - 30 gals - and would not recommend the cherry barbs/gourami in a small tank, only because the barbs are very active and may disturb the gourami.
