I'm trying to bonsai an olive tree. This is the first part of series. I cut off olive branch and planted it in the soil with help of root growth stimulator. I used trunk splitting technique.

I tried it without splitting trunk. It didn't work. I'm doing air layering this time. I'll find out in a month or so.

This branch is too wide and already "wood" , does this really work with such big branches? I thought olive tree can only be grown from tiny young parts 🌱

Complete Newbie, so apologies for the silly question, but whats the idea behind behind splitting the base of cutting in to a cross? Better root growth? Never seen this technique.
@plantronika
@plantronika 3 года назад
I used trunk splitting tehnique because then my little tree will look more like bonsai (oldish trunk style). You can google it.

@@plantronika Thank you so much. That sounds cool. I going to try right know. Is there any way of curbing its growth so it grows around 80 cm to a 1m. Is it just a case of keeping in a small pot to restrict root growth. How do you create a cork screw affect on the main trunk or two branches inter- twined. Thank you

I suspect this technique did not work. I have grafted and rooted olives for years and never heard of splitting the trunk like that

Nice video! I'd like to also propagate an olive cutting. Unfortunately my branches are not so thick as yours. What diameter does your main branch to soil have? What's the smallest diameter I could use? Thanks!
@plantronika

Hi, mine is about 7 millimeters. I think you should propagate yours in the water but I think also you could succeed if you have roots grow stimulator like me.

If you ask me, it didn't. In the best scenario, the cutting is not completely dry from water absorption, but no roots are grown from it.

i've done it exacly like this, and it started to grow leaves, im about 2 months in, i should have removed the prior leaves that didn't fall off because now there is no sign of growth there, but the barks there are green, so it's not dead.

@@plantronika How much water do you use ? Daily ?
@giselau5606
@giselau5606 3 года назад
helps the tree survive since the leafs lose water, too many will kill the tree by drying it out before it can develop roots. Splitting the bottom of the tree allows the “inner part“ of the tree, which is softer and water soaked, to develop roots. The bark and the green layer below are like a shell to prevent water (and roots) from coming out. Therefore people split the trunk so that the inner part is torn open. Even better practice is to „sharpen the end“ like a pencil as he does in a video - you maximise the surface of the soft part of the tree (make sure all green part is removed or it will grow back)
@giselau5606
@giselau5606 3 года назад
cutting the end at a 45 degree angle is just the lazy version of increasing the surface of the inner stem
