In the past 3 years, I've been breeding parthenocarpy into dwarf tomato lines. I started with a fantastic parent in Brandybear to breed in the critical qualities of parthenocarpy, taste, growth habit, and disease resistance. The two other parents were a dwarf red and a dwarf brown that had really good taste. They are looking great so far.

And my education continues! Thanks for sharing the 'what, why and how' of your work in the garden. Hopefully I'll be setting out my tomato, pepper and cucumber starts in my rain gutter grow system (thanks Larry Hall... rip) container garden this weekend. Night temps finally stabilized in the 60s so there's that. There are a lot of less productive things to do in life and you're definitely using what you know to give back in your knowledge. Thanks again and Happy Gardening to Everyone.

Started doing the Larry Hall thing in 2012. Grew lots on my large deck in the RGGS. Very colorful and nice guy. That's how I migrated into hydro. Started adding Miracle Grow into the gutters and let the roots dive down. From there, I added a return onto the gutters and a pump to recirculate. Of course, I needed a greenhouse for best results. The rest is history. Ah, the good old days. Love to hear how your garden grows this year so keep in touch.

Thank you for explaining parthenocarpy so well!! I’ve been really struggling to understand the benefit! Now I get it. I’m really enjoying your process. ❤😊

Hey cousin! Thanks. It's a passion that helps me fill the day. You in MS or TX these days? Congrats on the new house. New beginnings are exciting. Renee is near Dad doing the same.

Wow Brent great video that's very informative those plants are beautiful very lush and green I've never grown a dwarf variety but now considering it . At the end of your dwarf project will you be selling any of your dwarf cross seeds ? If not I understand and would ask for your recommendation on a dwarf variety to start with for a first time dwarf tomato grow thanks for sharing 👍

I sure hope to be selling pat-b tomato seeds in the next few years for sure. I will make sure the genetics get out. It only helps. In the meantime, I hope to be selling other seed next year from winter squash, summer squash, eggplant, pepper, and possibly melon. I'm in the end stages for much of that work. So glad you stopped by buddy.

If I breed a semi determinate to an indeterminate, will the f1 generation be all indeterminate (I read it's dominant) then some semi determinates should show up in the f2 generation?
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 3 месяца назад
I'm not sure what a semi-determinate is. I'm not even sure if an OP determinate exists. I've never grown one or heard of one. Most determinates are hybrids and crossing any hybrid with an OP indeterminate will throw indeterminate and determinate because a hybrid is not highly inbred. This year is my first year crossing determinate with indeterminate. That cross involved a determinate hybrid and I see examples of determinate, but mostly indeterminate. In all situations, you should get determinate in the F2.

@@C3Voyage Thank you for answering. I've been growing an OP semi determinate (Opal's Homestead) from saved seed, off and on since 2012 and love it's tidy compact sturdy growth habit and productivity. It has a nice tangy tomatoey flavor too. I was thinking of trying to breed it to Brandywine, because that's the best tomato I've ever had, but can't stand indeterminates growth habit, and would like more tomatoes per plant. Victory seed has a category for Determinate and Semi Determinates lumped together. I'm definitely no expert though.

@@MartieMc I have a cultivar I call Brandybear and it has a stout compact growth. It's an indeterminate always having a growing tip. Most crosses I breed it to develop a similar habit (less tall). If you cross to Brandywine, you may certainly get a more compact growth especially in the F2 stage. I say go for it. Btw, Victory doesn't carry it anymore, but saw it at Bounty seeds.

@@C3Voyage It's a very worthy tomato. It would be a shame for it to go extinct. I have saved seeds, and trying to keep it going. It's such an easy, tidy, yet vigorous tomato to grow.
